Basically what this guy said… In KoF14 Dream Match i trust.
The only KOFs worth playing pretty much are 98 and 2k2 as those work on GGPO/Supercade that have good online. The problem is just that 98% of the competition are brazillians, mexicans and chinese who will either troll the shit out of you or destroy you.
who needs Ryu when you have Kula?
You know Laban, I gotta say as an old timer that you only haveing started playing and to show so much dedication still especially given this day and age of used tissue fighting games. I appreciate that I used to hit arcades all the time back in the day you’d usually drop five bucks or more on a bad day but I loved the SNK Cabs and hearing your enthusiasm really warmed what qualifies for the cold beating rock what passes for a heart in my chest.
XIII is better then a few of the KOF’s but its are best shot of holding over until something better. The game is good, and easy but with some flaws.
So then commentary is severely lacking. I figured this would be a problem, Steve can be good but he scews (sp?) twoards too much hype not enough depth, hellpockets has a pretty good mixture of both but given local and what Im guessing to be economic straits like most of us he can’t commentate or get out as much as people would like myself included. In that venue it seems we need a James Chen, Ultra David for KOF but that is such a tough thing too do both people need to be informative enough while having chemestry which is extremely tough thing to do. Even Yipes doesn’t commentate Marvel all of the time but people universally recognize him as the guy for that game.
KOF is no harder then anyother fighter it just takes dedication. I agree also that the “honest”, “mans”, nonsense needs to stop. Don’t put down any of the other games just show how epic the game is on its own. Honestly that is hurting more than helping and stigmatizing this community as a bunch of elitist assholes. The community cohesivness isn’t all that great either. We need to set up more KOF centric activites agreed? The image of the brand needs to be built up more. More exposure is needed and not the MLG kind. The game needs to be loved for the sake of it then everything else will follow.
Has anyone noticed anything at any locals recently any new faces? Anything of that nature? More of a drop off in attendance ect.?
When I’m using the word “honest” I’m talking about the first impression, not about the high level play. The game still keeps many of the KOF staple mechanics which are uninviting to new players by nature. While the game has nice looking aesthetics it’s not enough to convince a new player to overcome the hardships of getting into the series for the first time. Getting used to the movement (both physically – doing the short/long button presses well – and getting used to “think in KOF movement”) is a big task. Capcom games have a lot going for them more than just the brand- They are designed to be fun for new players from day 1, and when you get destroyed by a better player they give an impression of a lesser disparity in the match. Other games, including KOF, do it less.

KOF should stop trying to overtake Capcom, it won’t work. The games don’t have the marketing power (or competence, SNK’s US Marketing Section was pretty non-existent in the USA, on the other hand, Capcom is a marketing God.) nor does SNK have the resources. KOF should try to be like Smash, MK or Tekken, strong scenes who are secretly big and powerful, they are just silent. Tekken for example is almost always at EVO, despite not being a Capcom game.

KOF does need more information. I just got into 98 and the lack of technical data is a little underwhelming. I love the game but its so hard to find Shermie information.

KOF needs dedicated KOF events. Frosty Faustings happened this weekend and even though I’m not a huge fan of GG, it was great to watch the Top 8 of GG, a game I have played literally only 3 times. The guys operating the stream said that this was a GG Event and that every other game ( SF,UMVC3,KOF) would only have some pool matches streamed and then Top 4, that is it. GG got most of the stream time and it was a great event.
A way to help the KOF community grow is to stop making these kinds of threads and to just play, study and learn the game.
Ditto Des.
I see everyone trying to come up with a reasonable solutions and they are offering thier own thoughts on a problem this community suffers from. The goal is to share information on something we are all passsionate about. To improve quality. Unless you have legitamte insight into a way to fix the problem out of just playing the game which Im sure everyone is already doing then what is the big problem? That is what these boards are for correct sharing information? Instead people are pupuing like mr ching of fighters avatar of a ripped off Mr Karate II changed to a blue haired Kyo/K clone hurray for chinas pale immitation of a game we already have. Sorry that was a tad rude but hey.
Please sir if you have any insight into inner workings please share if you have any suggestions please share. I’m personally asking. Anything would help. Something to make it better. The problems are large but something on an organizational level would help.
If you ran a tournament what would your suggestion be?
Des is actively working on a solution himself, as he is also one of the well known players who participates and even runs a few tournaments every now and then. It is imperative that we continue to support the game by playing it for now and showing up for the events as much as possible. Until then, we will develop something more concrete. He wasn’t trying to be rude or anything. It’s just best to continue playing the game until another good opportunity comes up. Lots of planning and management involved…
It may not be hard, but it sure looks like it will slap my shit the very moment I pick up the stick.
All of us go to every section of shoryuken for a few months and even when it’s not relevant post " Play King of Fighters XIII!!!“
then it will get into people’s head subconciously eventually, and then they will feel like playing KoF later for some reason. Hehe
if your on Xbox and playing CoD or Halo send a message to your 30 recent players at once now and then saying " King of fighters XIII is the best game ever!!” ive dont that before. lol
and got replies like " What’s that, and i’ll look it up, and shut up!" LoL
Kind of unorthadox but i bet they still checked youtube in the end. Hehe
I think for me, just some more beginner-to mid-level friendly content would help. Not like “this is the attack button!” level, but more of “do these simple things for now until you get a feel for it” would do well.
I don’t know, I ended up in a really weird spot in KOF XIII: loved a lot about it but felt so far behind and with no constant way to play (online is where I get the brunt if my practice due to life and such)… Just lost the feel.
Yeah, but it’ll turn off more people than it would intrigue. Personally, nothing is more obnoxious and more of a turn off than “play ____ instead!”
I dont say that, i say KoFXIII is the best fighting game ever…!! i don’t like telling people what to play, that’s as annoying as all the ad’s on youtube now if you dont have Ad block. Lol
I don’t know about you guys; but, I’m bring 98um/02um/XI/XIII to NCR for BYOC. I don’t know if I would run a side-tournament without having much set-ups let alone experience running a tournament, but for sure I’m down to session all weekend long with people and just play KOF. People that have met me “in the real world” know that I usually help break down how people play and help push them into a better direction of developing their game.
I also plan to do this at EVO. Actually in some twisted way, I hope KOF XIII isn’t mainstage so I wouldn’t feel obligated to enter the tournament and waste time standing by pools to listen to my name and only play 4 matches in like 1-3 hours. I just want to play people and teach people.
I mainly just want to play 98, 98um, and 02um though.
Of course I’m going to import Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure ASB first thing and am going to bring that. Maybe import the latest Hots Shots Golf as well. It’s going to be a swell time.

Good wiki page on Shermie with fantastic move descriptions and combos. There’s also hitbox and framedata. What more do you want?
Drop into #snkplaymore on efnet and ask for more information, but really these pages cover a lot of bases. But really this kind of info on KOF98 is much more advanced than many of the sf4 wiki pages. And sure the forums have more advanced stuff, but it is nowhere near as nicely accessible.
I wish someone could translate that info.
Ironically, I did the Shermie page for the 98 wiki. I also did pages for O. Mai, Benimaru, and Yamazaki. I can work on more pages if there is a demand; I want to go over DandyJ’s info and edit it with my own but I don’t want to hurt the integrity of the “attitude” he uses that I won’t really emulate. Like I feel I can really clean up the Kyo page but it will lose its charm.
Hey good on you man, love to know how the tourney goes. How’s your XI game/ what team do you use? I know XI was in that wierd transition place but man I wish they would bring that mechanic back. The Marvel style tag out made the game really dynamic with set ups. Makes me want to fire up the PS2 and play that game again just gotta find my stick. Wish they would make a team Buriki 1 but I think that was a one time thing. Happy new year all and good KOF. Hopefully this will be a good year full of new ideas and growth for this community. Every little bit helps.
I have to agree regarding new player accessibility. KOF 13 is a heavily combo focused game. Pulling off the big combos is really going to make you into a great player regarding KOF 13.
Older KOF games had an easier approach - they focused more on fundamentals. Street Fighter IV is a great example of how a game can advance into the next generation, but still have a great new player accessibility approach with it’s focus on fundamentals. The combos don’t have to be “drive cancel full meter bar corner etc. etc.” to pull off combos. Just simple combos can still garner great gameplay.
KOF 13 really isn’t all that new player accessible like Street Fighter IV is, for example. It takes dedication, sure, but how does that help new players get a sense of introduction to the game? Make them feel like they can actually win in this game being a new player? Disregarding Capcom being a far more successful company than SNK is, they take a different approach with how they create fighting games.
I remember that I once played as Ryu, and I am not all that good at Street Fighter since I focus more on KOF, but I was able to beat a friend of mine who is an advanced Street Fighter player once. It made me feel good that I was able to do that. Of course, all the other times I lost… but at least I won once!
Sticking to fundamentals. Blocking, punching, hadoken. And I won.
You think I would even have a chance against Bala if I didn’t know how to perform 40 hit combos? Forget about it.
