Why switch? 3D environments give a better sense of position.
@PsychoJosh The main reason is I’m not happy with the way the characters mesh with the 3D. Also, I can’t afford to pay for more 3D modeling, 2D backgrounds I can create myself.
MVC2 and CVS2 used sprites on 3D backgrounds and they looked alright, you could try doing some camera or depth of field trickery to make it look better.
I personally love 2D parallax scrolling. If done right it can often look better than 3D. Just look at games like Muramasa or Dragon’s Crown.
It all comes down to the implementation.

I like the 2D backgrounds better. They blend better with the 2D sprites.
I’m of two minds. I think the craftsmanship of the 2D backgrounds is a lot nicer, and they’re definitely more seamless. But on the other hand, I’m also with PSYCH0JOSH–the 3D backgrounds added a certain sense of depth that went well with the flying. I’m also a sucker for the tacky sort of look that 3D/2D provides.
@IM_Amazon Unfortunately, I don’t have much of a choice. My specialty is 2D and I can’t afford to hire a 3D modeler at the moment. I might pull a Skullgirls and switch to 3D later down the road but for now, I’m going to stick to 2D.
