His attitudes about fights better than any other MC that isn’t actively jumping into shit. The only folks that Kenichi doesn’t fight are girls, which I don’t think any shonen MC ever does, and the fights he has are almost always “Look, I don’t WANT to fuck with you, but I’ll do it if I have to.”
Not making a move on Miu is because he is terrified of the Elder, and folks keep getting in his way when he does. Not to mention the girl is kind of clueless-- which is defensible in this context because look at her upbringing. Its not like he’s actively running away from her, nor is he one of those PUSSY AT ANY COST characters. The other girls that want his dick, he likes Miu better and doesn’t want to fuck up his chances with her.
The typical clueless shonen romance thing would be Ukita, which I find amusing as a sub-plot rather than irritating.

Yeah as far as Boys on the Run, that wasn’t a satisfactory ending to that subplot for me, rather more depression. Would’ve wanted to see Tanishi actually end that through a final confrontation, but that may have been out of character for this mangaka.
But end what through a final confrontation? He didn’t have any reason to fight-- as smug as the dude was, he honestly didn’t do anything wrong.
I think I didn’t like it because the cancer, more than anything in the series, felt too random.
^Having looked over the raws, I felt it was a cheap cop-out to stop Tanishi from having even ONE moment of triumph that isn’t ruined by some type of screw up or bad luck. Though screwing over his protagonists seems to be par for the course with the mangaka.
Overcoming that guy through a final confrontation after extensive hard work with Hana and the Gym would’ve been a nice progression from the complete loser who never tried hard for anything in his life. But nope, Tanishi is still by and large a complete loser
But they didn’t have a reason to fight in the first place. It was pointless-- he was defending the honor of someone honorless. Tanishi was pushing that fight 100%.
It’d be nice if Tanishi had more of a direction to move… but I think that is kind of the point of the manga.

What else was it about? Because he felt frustrated and wanted to take it out on something? It still wouldn’t have been the other dude’s fault, it would be Tanishi proving himself to himself by beating up someone that had no fault in where he was.
^It was also about proving to himself he wasn’t garbage, and could do something if he tried hard enough.(He just failed horribly…)
Btw not assigning fault to Aoyama for sleeping with Chiharu, they deserved each other.
