php and mysql is a whole different beast.
Yeah. I’ve taken some programming courses, though. Did some C++ and Java.
I’ve done as much as install PHP scripts and alter/insert/delete data from a MySQL database.
I just need to stop being lazy or distracted and get crackin’.
Spend some time learning about http too. Also save yourself the trouble of environment set up and use WAMP or LAMP
Anyone have any tips or resources for helping to code a simplistic blog site? I’m starting kinda new and probably am biting off more than i can chew, but any help is appreciated
I’m not sure if you want layout ideas or a deeper understanding of coding with html; this is a pretty good site for learning Web master stuff.
http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp
www.lynda.com is another good site if you want to fork over $25.
Or you could use Wordpress, which is what SRK uses (or used to use). I’m not really sure how it works, but it’s free and from what I understand, you can mod it.
Edit:
It also doesn’t hurt to browse other blog sites and view the page source to get other ideas since you’re trying to code your own.
or just go to www.blogspot.com and make one on there.
Are you making a blog as an exercise to learn web programming, or you just want a blog?
If you’re doing it as an exercise, they are probably walk throughs you can find on google np. Do it in php with WAMP.
If you want one, your better off just taking pre-made engines (like blogspot, wordpress, w/e) and changing the styles to suit your needs. They are pretty damn customizable although it helps if you have web programming experience cause looking at the raw source of those sites when customizing them won’t make any sense, and seem to be in proprietary scripting languages so not many ways to reference it.
bump again :woot:
ok, after about 6 different site redesigns, i finally have the drawing templates i’m happy with. i’m working on my horizontal menu in CSS. i got my logo (possible placeholder) in the center which works great, but i’m stumped on how to get the other navigation links there. how the heck do i position a div inside a div like this?
currently it looks like this
but i want it to look like this
the centered logo only takes up a box you see. so far it’s the only thing that’s working correctly
One option (if you are using Photoshop or Dreamweaver) is to create a hot spot, which is a built in function that allows you to add a link to parts of an image.
Another option is using html/xhtml to create an image map. You would still need an image editor to be able to plot coordinates based on the x and y axis of the image.
Or you could use the background-image:url(); css element to to put your navigation container in an then just put your navigation images/text into the division.
An example of css I did a while back:
#logo { background-image:url(assets/background.gif);
color: #000000;
font-size:2.5em;
font-weight:bold;
border-bottom: 2px solid #000000;
height:100px;
padding-left:20px;
}
<div id=“logo”>
Put whatever you want here
</div>
thanks for the idea, i’ll try it out shortly :tup:
No problem
Right now I am in the process or researching Web hosts, and I am starting to realize that I a lot of Web hosts and review sites are scams. I’m just wondering if someone could share their experience with a particular Web host, whether positive or negative.
My goal is to build a portfolio for my self, and the features that I am primarily looking for are MySQL, PHP, and flash, with a strong emphasis on PHP and MySQL, since those are skills that I want to demonstrate. I’m just trying to gather info before I just start gambling with my money.
Thanks in advance to anyone who actually responds.
Thanks!
I appreciate the feedback
no prob I have my own servers from both of them, cheap & highly reliable.
I had my own thread, but it was suggested to me that I look here for some help. So here is my original post:
Requesting a mature, honest assessment of my website
Before I even start, I am well aware that this site needs work. Physical work, as well as in the content itself. What I am looking for here is an actual assessment of my site. I have no problem accepting constructive criticism, but please don't come in here and waste my time with "UR SITE SUX ***."
So late October of '09 a friend of mine and I decide to put my microphone and video capture device to work. I had been wanting to learn site design for a while, and I have about a year until my college lets me take their classes. I took matters in to my own hands, and read Dreamweaver CS3 tutorials until my eyes bled. Do I even know 5% of Dreamweaver, HTML, or CSS? Absolutely not. But you have to start somewhere, and I wanted to put myself to the test. I wanted a functioning website.
Thus, RocketWhore.net was born. The initial dream was to make a sort of gutter-mouthed video game site. Think Maddox crossed with GiantBomb.com. Are we even close? Fuck no. Maddox is hysterical and GiantBomb are pros with years of experience. But this was the initial goal. Of course our progression was thwarted by hectic retail job schedules and school work. (we're both 23 and decided to go back to school last semester), but I think we've done a decent job for a couple dudes with NO experience recording video, audio, editing, web design, and who don't have the budget to play as many games as the pros.
That all being said, this is the site:
www.RocketWhore.net
This is the twitter, should you happen to enjoy our work:
http://twitter.com/RocketWhorenet
What I am asking all of you is for some constructive criticism. What physically would you like to see? What would make it a site you'd bookmark? I'll have to admit that some of our content is not as good as I'd hope. Honestly, the Bayonetta video was ill-conceived and not properly researched. And the latest Indie video...Fuck that was Joe's idea and I'm fucking embarassed of that one. I might even take it down. It was a bad day, but I know that is no excuse. I, personally, thought our Dante's Inferno video was good (http://rocketwhore.net/Previews/DantePreview.html), so you might want to take a look at that as sort of what I'm going for. The Star Wars video was pretty good, too, I thought (http://rocketwhore.net/Opinions/Editor/TopSW.html).
I've been on SRK for many years, lurking, and posting the occasional message (fuck, I own the blue hoodie). I know there are a ton of gamers here, and the community (at least as I remember it. I haven't been around a lot lately) is one I think highly of. I know you don't have to believe me, but this is the only forum I am posting this message on right now. It might sound silly, but I trust most of you people more than I trust the typical 4channer or gamefaqs forum-goer. Well, that is, "trust" in the highest sense as one can on the internet. I thank any of you who choose to respond in advance.
Resurrection! :party:
How are my fellow web peeps doing? I recently finished my university bidness coming out with a lame back-up psych degree, but I’m wasting no time now getting back into the web design game. There’s sooooo much I still need to learn.
I’m currently contracted to make a website for a chef friend of mines: current unfinished draft.
I’m also trying to simultaneously design a portfolio for myself, but that’s going turtle-slow until I get the other site finished: tuanvo.com
I really want to learn Illustrator and make vector symbols/icons/logos/art. My design style has been very minimal and I’d like to spice things up a bit and expand my skillset.
So… How about that HTML 5? How about that XHTML 2? Dat CSS3. Anyone got projects/works to share?
Tuna…you’re crazy, man. Also, congratulations.
Congratulations Tuna Fish, that’s awesome!
I finished my Associates in Web Design and am about to finish my Associates in programming. I’m already in the works in transferring my credits into a Bachelors in Computer Science or Information Technology. I did an internship doing Graphic Design and Flash Programming: Posters
I’ve been talking with some landscapers about building a site but nothing set in stone.
I did manage to build my portfolio, but it is still a work in progress because all it has is school work and stuff from my internship.
I think I may create a vector layout for it, not sure.
I haven’t messed with html 5, xhtml 2, CSS3. I’ve been mainly messing around with ActionScript 3.0, PHP,MySQL and image editing/illustration software. I really want to learn AJAX but I hate JavaScript.
wow i never knew this thread was here, lemme join in the festivities, i’m taking a break from school right now aka trying to get money , going to finish my associates in something random like general ed next semester so i can continue my bachelors in graphic design at colorado tech next fall. Went over all my credits and it would be easier to just finish with some random degree then get all the other graphic design classes i still need. I’ve been mostly doing web design lately but I love doing various graphic design as well I’m really into logo and brand indentity.
I just finished my newly designed blogfolio site @ Techmode Blog 2.0 I’m very bad at updating it especially because i took a very long break from my last site to design and code this one.
I also finished the new Foe Hammer site @ Foe Hammer Custom Joysticks Basically everyone liked how my own site came out and wanted something kinda similar. So I gave it a mix, I kept the general elements of the last site and then added the elements from my site that they liked so it was still unique.
Tell me what you guys think, what I can improve on, etc etc.
I’m one quarter away from graduating. Prepping dat portfolio son. Right now I’m doing a lot of volunteer work for AIGA. Helping with events for the LA chapter. A lot awesome graphic design events and stuff.
