So I did a quick search on youtube to see if anyone posted a video of me, and sure enough I was there. Only one video, but I thought I would share. It may be vanilla but this is how I still play Blanka if anyone is having problems.
You guys want to critique a not so great Gouken later?
I haven’t been playing street fighter long but I’m no stranger to high level competitive gaming so tips (no matter how ‘harsh’ if useful) will be appreciated.
This is actually one of the real matches against a good opponent. Here you can see that it isnt easy to zoon out a good honda player.
Because many players says that this matchup is one of the easiest for gouken, which i dont agree with it.
ok, i watched about 1/3 of those videos. some things off the top of my head.
you give him free jump-ins. cr.fp or cr.mk to anti-air. you gave him way too many free jump ins.
you don’t punish correctly. i saw a lot of blocked tiger uppercuts punished with…throw. my favorite thing about gouken is that his bnb punish hurts so much but doesn’t require any fancy links/timing. no reason why you couldn’t have done countless other combos/punishes other than throw.
you don’t need to ex-flip out of every knockdown. i wasn’t keeping count, but it felt like you were ex-flipping out of 95% of your knockdowns when you had meter.
be patient. overall a good general rule, but it goes double with gouken, and triple when fighting sagat who has a great fireball game, good anti-airs, good links, and good ultra. i think you jumped in way too many times when he had plenty of time to anti-air you, which is exactly what he did.
you focus way too much and don’t change your strategy when you see that focus fishing doesn’t work against emblem lord. well, maybe you changed your strategy after the second vid, but i never got past that…but you should have changed strategies by the second or third match already.
changing strategies. another general rule of thumb. apparently emblem lord knows that backthrow > j.mp > cr.fp/cr.mk > demon flip routine, and he dp’s you out of it every time you demon flip. in fact, i think he even started to ex.dp it, i guess for the multi-hit version to break air parry. after the first one or two, stop and try something else.
It felt like my os tech wasn’t working, I assume it was just timing as looking at the input replays I’m downbacking and grab, and the lk starts to come out but he gets the grab. I stopped doing any resets and just went to tatsu after the 4th game I think, but I kept trying for the focus all through it and it cost me a lot. Thanks for the advice.
I watched most of them, and I would say against Sagat, he does’t ever really need to jump, because he’s just going to try to outzone you, so less random air fireballs. As for generally improving the Gouken game, less focus attack baiting when you have real low health, and work on your corner/pressure game. If you are focus attack baiting and they focus attack too, make sure you dash back more often than forward. As for the wakeup game, I would say exactly what Makro said, to not use EX demon flip to get out of knock downs, backdash is usually sufficient.
Let us not forget also if you focus then they focus counter it with kongo before theirs hits, you can also focus volley as well, meaning its possible to go back and forth with focus attacks just be fast enough
option select tech for gouken isn’t the same as other chars, you press downback+grab+mk. you should never see lk come out, you’re likely to be thrown in the startup frames, you should see either cr. mk, or tech.
lol… emblem lord… i didnt do all that much better than you did i guess… i got about 7 out of 20 games. on him. 1st time i played him i beat him 5 in a row, then he cought on… but really that was back in vanilla, unbuffed gouken vs as mago says it “accidental wins” sagat.
i need to play him again see how much different it is. since sagat now is a little more tolerable.
