Is anyone else having tons of trouble getting air tatus to hit crouching opponents? I can’t seem to get it for the life of me.
It only hits a few characters crouching, like Abel and Sagat.
Ah, that’s a little bit of a bummer. So basically “big” characters?
…and ryu?
This is not true. It can work on most anybody, maybe even everyone…
The big guys are just easier, and prone to more setups.
Is there a trick to these instant air tatsu’s?
Or just plain fast execution?
:qcb::uf: or :qcb::ub: + :k:
But you press K after leaving the floor, there is a sweet spot in the timing on when to press K. You must find it yourself, since is the way YOU will do it.
Alright, was only asking.
And besides, it’s definitely not the same as doing instant cannon spikes. Already tried this method and it doesn’t come out anywhere near as low to the ground as some of the ones in that vid.
That is why, you don’t press it right away, you must wait. Find your method to see it, I still have problems with it, but I kinda know when to press K.
Hold :uf: or :ub: after the :qcb: and after 1 or 2 frames press K, or something like that.
Didn’t try to sound aggressive back there, just saying that one needs to find the way it will work for one, sometimes I press K after saying “one” in my head after inputting the motion. That is my method, which doesn’t work most of the time.
Fair do’s.
Despite liking that vid, I still don’t think there’s much practical application of these when compared to his other attacking options. It seems a bit gimmicky and risky above all else (and I don’t just mean execution-wise). Correct me if I’m wrong, but they only need to block right and the opponent gets a free punish if Gouken lands in range?
I’ve managed to get it near instantly with a stick. :uf: then :hcb: :hk: seems to be a smooth continuous motion for me.
the jump back ex instant air tatsu is a fantastic tool.
you get two heavy chips for 70 block damage then rocket away at hyper speed.
if you happen to miss it, you get jump back, the safest action in the game.
you are also likely to get jump back roundhouse which can still score an instant overhead.
additionally, the different setups for an instant overhead hit make this technique well worth the effort of practice.
this is top level gouken stuff.
For the most part, yeah. You can get a crossup opportunity off the EX version, or do backwards air tatsus to stay safer, but it’s definitely not something you can abuse.
Just another (difficult) trick to throw in the bag really. I do think it should be considered as an option though, Gouken needs all the help he can get!
Unfortunately this is all based on the opponent doing nothing on wakeup.
It’s a clever trick, but that’s all it is in my opinion.
If you can’t make a person scared to attack on wakeup as Gouken, I think you need to adjust your gameplan. People don’t ALWAYS do a reversal. There are tons of practical setups for this, in my opinion, and you don’t always fight people with dragon punches.
I never said that, did I? I said they were tactics based on the opponent doing nothing and let’s face it, barring one of them setups, they could all be dp’d. That’s the point I was making.
Don’t know what makes you think I lack a pressure game either, based on a forum post. And besides, going back to what I said earlier, Gouken has MUCH better (and more reliable) options than this.
Wasn’t meant to be a personal attack. Sorry if it came across like that, the “you” was meant to be more of the collective, forum-wide “you”.
I’m just saying, people wake up and block a fair amount… not everyone has a DP, and even those with one don’t always use it (especially if you condition them with safe dive kicks and whatever). Therefore, this clever trick is pretty useful to bring out of the bag fairly often. They COULD all be DPed, yes, but it’s pretty hard to react to this setup.
lol, just like nos99 said, i cant ever get it to work in a match anyway.
it feels similar to a one frame link.
the important part is that on failure of a backward instant air ex tatsu attempt, you get jump back roundhouse, which is very safe.
an instant backward air ex tatsu right next to someone is awesome.
if they block both hits you get 70 damage and cannot be punished.
if you feel a reversal coming, just dont do it.
Shine (Gouken) vs Sanford (Akuma)

Dunno what to think of this, Shine Gouken won, but still.
I think the jumpback roundhouses were a good idea … you can tell Sanford was really trying hard to make the air hadoken frame trap setup.
He could tech more, but it’s possible he was eating the throws to avoid eating a larger combo?
edit: Well, okay, there were some tick throws too.
Doesn’t Sanford also play as Gouken? He knew the spacing very well and wasn’t victim to Gouken’s BnB at all. Sanford also exploited the frame advantage Akuma with great pokes + big combos and grab mixups.
After playing this match plenty, I’d say Akuma is slightly more favored (more mixup options and escapes) than Gouken.
