Hey all you Shen Long users, Idk if you’d guys be interested but DarthPaul is coming up with an interesting idea to get people together seriously and train hard…He made this thread for people that want to dedicate their time to maybe attend next years EVO or any other local or non-local tournies.
Well two videos from an an online tourney I’m playing. First rounds I did play terribly, I was quite nervous, later on things improved, however he was a really really bad Sagat, good luck to me. If you want to check them out.:
I didn’t want too much risk after a missed TU and backthrow tatsu is pretty risk free. It was a bit laggy and didn’t want to get TU if my timing wasn’t correct.
Still I did a reset in the second vid out of a backthrow at 3:12 (yeah, my girlfriend decided she wanted to show our dog to the world, but still you can see it ), and also in 4:12 I did punish a missed ultra with cr.fp, ex palm, tatsu, which I think is a pretty solid punish for such a whiff. And again, I punished a whiffed TU in minute 5:06 of the second video with a backthrow s.fp reset for a flip dive kick, which is a great punish for a whiffed TU imho.
The thing with Sagat is that the resets are very punishable with his TU, even if you go for the shield he can go for the ex TU, so it’s not something to be abused at all, and so I do prefer to mix up the tatsu with the resets so that I’m not predictable.
And I don’t like cr.lp tatsu at all sorry, you can’t hit confirm it and a whiffed tatsu vs Sagat is match lost
Ya, the lag factor is big in online play so it make sense to some extent. I mostly play 4/5 bar matches which are ‘ok’.
In general I think you basically have to get over the idea that you can play totally safe with Gouken and win. You cannot. Gouken’s close in options are very terrible so you have to learn to see the spacing when c.lp/c.mk will win after a blocked TK/etc. Otherwise Sagat can just push you around with TK the entire round.
A missed/blocked tiger uppercut is punishable by c.fp xx ex-palm which does about 200+ damage (more if reset mixup works) more than a backthrow tatsu. You could probably have wrapped up most of these matches in about 25 seconds just by making this adjustment. Not only that, but quicker options like c.mk/c.mp xx hk tatsu do more damage and are easy.
Against a good Sagat getting the ex-palm tatsu combo is just not going to cut it, you have to go for dizzy IMO. Otherwise the round becomes neutral again where he has a huge (HUGE) advantage over you. If he is TU-happy then just do the reset but dont go into the canceled dive flip and then crush his whiffed TU. If he does not TU he will usually just crouch in which case you can do walk-up (forward) throw.
If you are going for backthrow (5 frame startup) after a tiger knee, which beats absolutely nothing, instead of a 4 frame start which under certain circumstances does win…good luck. If you aren’t used to doing this, start out with the lame c.lp xx c.lp xx c.lk type combos - at least they have a chance of working while the backthrow just works against people who don’t know what they are doing. That is the kind of stuff I started with, once you get comfortable you will know when the c.lp/c.mk xx hk tatsu is going to connect.
If you don’t learn this then you will probably lose to nearly every talented rushdown player/character. I know I was.
BTW/FYI, from what I can tell every character has at least one jumpin that beats c.fp most of the time and all my normal playing partners have figured out which ones. In these situations, the c.mk is the one that will normally beat their jumpin. Mix this in with the empty jump which beats counter and it is a horrible guessing game for Gouken.
Here you go fellas
gouken vs balrog loosers semi finals
match start at 3:45
i dont even know how to really play this character, but my reaction time is fuckin beast so it didnt really matter. I DO NOT RECCOMMED STUFFIN DASH PUNCHES WITH FIREBALLS, but if your reaction time is good then by all means try :wonder:

PS i did a wake up ultra cuz i was talkin shit and every one yelled WAKE UP ULTRA so to be a crowd favorite i did it lol.
I used to think that both throws have a 3 frame startup, but the backthrow has a wider tech window once you connect with the throw, so they can tech more often, but you connect it the same as you connect every other throw in the game.
Gouken vs. Rog really depends on the Rog, ihmo. That rog wasn’t a great one (ihmo) – not enough pressure. Very little work to stay within the Rog punishment distance, making the fireballs pretty effective.
When I play as Rog, I just keep staying close. TAP is enough to stop armor absorb moves and can provide me more time to charge another dash punch. Against Gouken’s, just keep going up/down and with grabs – it’s just punishment heaven.
reasoned is right.
backthrow has an extra 2 frames to start up, giving it an extra 2 frames to tech basically.
when you need to respond quickly, you need to use standard throw.
use back throw for guaranteed punishment and tricks.
one fight i did yesterday… we organised a little tournament at my place yesterday with 16 participants. I dont know how its possible but i took my gouken to the semi-finals.
Here is my fight in 1/4 finals against a Balrog.
Please feel free to give me some advices.
Is gouken a defensive character? yeah. But he has a good offense, and against boxer, you need to attack. You dont get to let him throw stuff at you all day and come out clean.
Hes weak against cross-ups, also if you bait a buffalo headbutt hes fucked.
Practice your combos. You missed a few oportunities there, like when you hit a dive kick and went for a st. HK. you should have gone at least for close st. HP into ex palm rush, into another palm rush.
My best advice is: learn to attack. Pokes, block strings, cross-ups, resets. Youll need all opportunities you can get.
I really dont like doing this unless you can guarantee it will kill, you’re sacrificing a huge chunk of positioning and wakeup options to score a little extra damage, I still firmly believe mp/hp palm is the best ender as you can put a hado on their head and demon flip the distance or anti air the escape attempt. The point is we all know what gouken offense is capable of so why squander any chance you get at it.
If you want a positioning/initiative advantage than HP palm is not the best choice. Go for a dash->reset option (but not a cancel - it is too far) like standing roundhouse or medium kick or far fp.
