Gouken Videos

Flipping against boxer is difficult, you have to be fully aware of his charge.

I have some problems against Abel also - mostly because of Gouken’s terrible jab. But Abel has a terrible wakeup game also so it pays to be aggressive against him.

Wow…what a rude comment.

Flipping against Boxer is GREAT tool…He’s about the only character where Demon Flip Parry is useful. It breaks down his headbutt and allow you to then absorb the damage and backthrow>mixup for great damage. Scrubby Rogs will turtle and almost telegraph a headbutt…

Counters in between them sexy 1 Frame Jabs are useful also…

Damn I have a TON of matchup info…but I hate writing it down…I only give pressure and mixup advice mostly…

Im going to grab my Rog playin friend and see if we can make character specific tutorials…

I’m kind of in the same boat as Siyko, but I’m not going to drop him. About two weeks ago, I realized that I’m going to run into even more hurdles if I only kept Gouken as my main. So I ended up trying to practice more of the cast and adding someone as a backup.

On the bright side, if you do stick with Gouken, chances are good that he’ll get better in the next version of SFIV, so you’ll have plenty of experience :bgrin: Maybe we’ll get that better tatsu gorasen where we can finally hit confirm it a lot more easily like a shoryuken and have an easier time FADCing into ultra with it in real matches.

Oblivioner and Shogun, thanks for the tips against Balrog. Him and Blanka give me such a hard time.

edit: Hey UltraDavid, if you don’t mind, do you think you could upload some videos of your Gouken sometime later on? I would love to see how SoCal’s best Gief plays Gouken and I think a lot of us here could learn from your gameplay.

Ya, parry works but only if boxer is far enough away so you are on the down arc of the flip before he hits you. AFAICT, you cannot parry on the way up. The counter is a life safer against boxer’s strings - agreed.

Eh, I’m just learning him, I’m not particularly great yet or anything.

As for Boxer, I don’t agree with flipping a lot. His crouching fierce and jumping fierce eat up your flip kick and throw, and if you flip parry them he recovers in time for that to not be a great idea. I got a bunch of games in with a good Boxer player last night, and he basically ruined me to the tune of like 2-8. Part of the reason is that doing things on reaction to rush punches and turn punches and blocking high/low rush punches on reaction are less viable online, but really it was just that I didn’t know what to do. My zoning game is made way worse by his turn punch, and the fact that I can’t vary the speed of my fireball lets him always turn punch at the same time after the fb leaves my hand. Offline I think I might be able to react to a far turn punch with ex hurricane or a standing normal, but I can’t do that consistently online. I don’t know, gonna take some figuring out. My problem isn’t Boxer’s up close poke strings or jabbing when I get up close; a reasonable Boxer will know that doesn’t fly very well against Gouken. My real problem is his destruction of my zoning game. I had the most success when I played offense and took advantage of Boxer’s weak wakeup game, but somehow it seemed like my offense only lasted so long before he got pushed out too far. I think playing more offense might be the key to this matchup. Right now this is my worst matchup.

I’ve played a couple very good Sagats and probably gone like 4-6 against them, but against Boxer I’m more like 2-8 so far.

Versus Boxer I’ve found that reacting to turn punch with EX Tatsu isn’t always the best idea. If you hit it too far out he’ll often fall out of the tatsu after a hit or two which leaves you in a very vulnerable state of him recovering before you land. You have to be pretty deep in to get all the hits. I’ll also agree that flipping is good against a new boxer normally, but that once you’ve done it a few times better players will activate the air parry with a jab or strong and headbutt your unprotected ass as you fall down, meaning you’re taking the absorbed normal + headbutt damage. Granted, you could divekick instead, but if they decide to just straight up headbutt you’ll eat that too. It’s a situation that’s not in Gouken’s favor. I prefer to play the ground game against boxer, tossing LP Hadous and using a lot of normals to win the day.

Honestly if someone is using turn punch a lot, just c.FP them. Throw a hadouken and as they’re coming at you just c.FP xx EX Palm. You win clean the majority of the time. It takes a few times to get the timing down, but at the end of the day you’ll have people who will stop turn punching and just jump or headbutt over the hadous, which leaves you in a great place: Able to punish them as they’re coming down.

Also I’ve stopped using c.FP as anti air for the most part and rely entirely on c.MK and EX Tatsu.

My GT for 360 is SG SPEC, I would like to practice with some Gouken players. I’m decent at best, but Sagat seems to be the only character that give me trouble.

If you interested, please send me a friend request. BTW, I have 2281 BP and 4611 CP Gouken only.

I also play as Vega, for those who are wondering why he is my avatar?

The turn punch sucks - usually you can zone it full screen so it comes up short and then punish (I find myself using standing roundhouse) - unless they are holding the charge for an inordinate amount of time. However, the zoning game is pretty much cooked because you cannot control the 3/4 screen distance…

Besides this, the turn punch does start to move boxer inside and/or push gouken towards the corner. Basically if you get in the corner with boxer he is going to rape gouken horribly.

The dashing straight is the problem for me. It is hard to stuff it, impossible to punish, and opens up all kinds of mixup after it.

The most success I have had with boxer is to be aggressive on wakeup and go for dizzy causing mixups - but frankly, I think boxer has a big advantage in the matchup.

here is a 2 part video of the winners finals from the tourney i was in, too me a while to get this done cause most programs wouldnt recognize the codec for the video or something like that

ill have the grand finals up soon among some matches from live

Thanks for the upload. This one helped me a lot because the Gouken here reminds me of how I play when I use him since I don’t really go too crazy on the Demon Flips either.

Not much mixup or big damage combos here - amazing that you could win without landing a single ex-palm in like 14 rounds

Oh wait…you were playing Rose.

wow that Rose was garbage.

lmao yeah this was early on in my develpment of my gouken youll see a big difference when you watch the xbox live matches

here is the first part of the grand finals

HIJINKS: Youre biggest problem is not putting enough pressure on your opponent, and I have no idea how you landed so many cr. Jabs into back throws. That chun-li was sleeping hardcore.

Never using his rush palm is counter productive, youre takign away a lot of chances for high damage.

oh i know trust me like i said in an earlier post that was the start of me using gouken, i think i had only been using him for a like a week or so lol, but my style of play has changed drastically. im being couched by someone on street fighter basics etc etc etc and learning specific things for gouken from all the posts in the gouken forum so its thanks to everyone here that im getting better

Here are some xbox live matches i recorded, ive got more coming soon
