Gouken Videos

Sad to see you go Sikyo - I’m sure all of us Gouken regulars will agree that you’ve contributed a wealth of usable information on Gouken’s approach and match-ups. I figured I was on the right path when I noticed through your vids that my emerging playstyle was very similar to your own, which was doing quite well in tournies here and there. I had my suspicions you’d moved onto a new main given your lack of participation in this area lately

I can understand your reasons for looking beyond Gouken to up your competitive advantage in many match-ups - its something I can agree with completely. The old man is good, but he’s not great and when it comes to high level play, problem areas and disadvantages begin to emerge that other characters simply don’t have to worry about and this seriously damages Gouken’s ability to tango with that end of the competition spectrum.

I like to play with different characters to other people, but most importantly I like to have fun with the characters, and that’s what I like most of Gouken. In DOA4 I mained Hayate because he was a lot of fun and still he was quite popular. However Gouken is both really fun to play, he’s distinctive, but I still have faith he’s competitive enough, and I do fine with him online and offline, that’s why I play with him.

I don’t brag that I lose because I’m using a low tier character, I simply acknowelge that I will have to be smarter, train more and be much better than him next time. I still think he’s a character built around thinking faster than the rest to overcome his lack of tools in some situations.

Just check my post about the tournament, I’m fine knowing I may not win, I prefer to play with the character I’ve fun with the most, even if I may lose.

Thanks to everyone for their support, I hope I can put the old man high in the ranks in this tourney

So everyone’s jumping ship huh?

Not really. Discussion has gravitated towards Sikyo’s decision to drop Gouken in favour of a Ryu in terms of his main character preference so people’s doubts concerning Gouken’s ability to compete at a high level are coming out of the woodwork.

I don’t think we’re seeing anything new here to be honest.

Ya, I still mostly play Gouken and Dictator. Dictator seems to be better against the characters I have problems with as Gouken.

I don’t think Gouken is a great choice for a tournament player but he isnt the worst option. If you can predict the opponent then you can really punish them but if you are slightly off your game and not on your toes - you are going to get crushed. This is true with all characters but some of the ‘top’ tier chars you can pretty much put it on auto-pilot with your setups and be OK.

I just want to say that I’m not playing Ryu because he’s high tier. I’m playing him because I can actually play the game with him.

Going back to that Sagat match, I didn’t have any mindgames I could play unless I accepted like 4:1 odds against me in every decision. No threats = no pressure = no mindgames.

With Ryu I can actually play these games. I can make him fear jumping in, or worry about c.lk, or actually care about being knocked down. With Gouken, I have none of these.

The main problem I have with Sagat is that you don’t want to be full screen, because his recovery is too good for you to do things on reaction and Palm doesn’t reach. At the same time, his poking game is better than yours so you don’t want to be too close. But then his tiger spamming game is so good that he can keep pushing you away fairly effortlessly. And like you said, he can just react whereas you have to gamble by predicting.

I play Gouken because I like Gouken, I go to tourneys because I like the whole atmosphere and love to do casuals… All for fun.

Now if were to be playing for the win, Gouken would not be my choice.

Edit-

I’ve found this yuotube channel, which I think belongs to the Gen fighting Gouken… Great vids. And are those some TK tatsu’s at the and of the vid? ;D Pretty cool.

Ryu. I wish I could enjoy playing as Ryu, and I wish my Sagat didn’t suck. Goukens too much fun to play as for me to stop. I need to start attending some MA tournies, finding times kind of a bitch with my current schedule.

I dont have a camera so i don’t record any matches. So anyone with a recording device, or anyone who just wants to play some matches, should send me a request.

I haven’t been watching many of the newer videos and none of my matches have been recorded recently so I feel like newer Gouken players are missing out. I don’t get into as many demon flip shenanigans as Dirty Bodega. I cant really describe how I play, its more deliberately.

Sucks that you’re moving on to Ryu Sikyo. But other Gouken players dont give up hope.

Brain Fart Edit:
Also, get at me before KOF 12 drops. Because I won’t be playing this as much after that drops.

You finally played a good Sagat player once and you’re quitting an entire character because of it? If you want to switch to Ryu anyway, that’s cool, but don’t switch because you lost once. I don’t know how many times I’ve come across some good player doing something in a tournament that’s seemed impossible for me to beat at first blush, but after playing against him some more I’ve usually managed to at least come up with a way to deal with it, if not beat it outright. I mean, you’re so unsure about the matchup that you’re not even sure yet where your sweetspot is or what your gameplan should be, and yet you’re going to switch characters because of it? Come on.

I’m not you. I know the matchup very very well - I know exactly what I was up against and what would beat it. It just so happened that nothing of Gouken’s provides him good odds for beating that particular style. I realize Gouken can always be shut down by this particular style - not just Sagat. I realize most of my tournament wins are against people unfamiliar with Gouken. That’s now how I want to play.

That’s just saying he is high tier but using more words.

gotta co-sign this, I don’t have too much problems against ryu chun or sagat. Ryu probably gives me more trouble out of the lot. But two matchups I need most work on are against balrog and(I might be in the minority here)M. Bison.

I played gouken for the first time because i like how the moves look.
I keep playing him because of the counter, and because it feels more “kof” style than the rest (excep c.viper), with counters, antiair as a qcb k, shoryuken is a palm… etc… it feels “kof”.

My reason to keep playing gouken right now, is because i can beat ANYONE without a single FADC, and without relying on my ultra.
I play with control pad, so i just can’t do FADC 100%, but i don’t mind… and i don’t rely on my ultra to do damage, i just use ultra when the oportunity comes to backthrow or they miss, but i don’t look for shoryuken fadc ultra combos to win.

I won’t FADC ever with gouken to hit an ultra (i do sometimes to surprise people and be safe after a tatsu or palm, one every 10 matches at most), and i won’t j.mp on a backthrow, because i am not confident on that 100%, and i think i deal enough damage without these tools.

For me, if i can read an opponent and predict moves (and i do it quite well, i play tekken like that too), i win, without difficult FADC combos, or weird link frames to do stuff…
…i love when i find a good opponent, who FADC a shoryuken intro ultra, who deals damage from lk or lp with link frames, and it don’t matter because if i have 1 ex and i guess right 2 times… i deal enough damage to win.

I’m not going to big tournaments or evo… but right now i can beat the ass of everyone around my place, and online with good connections, without a single FADC, and i will keep it this way, because it’s enough for me

Same. Biggest problems:

Boxer
Bison
Honda
Ryu

BTW, I think I have played you a few times on PSN - ggs.

i main abel but here is my Gouken against seth

The missed back throws, the jumping back into the corner on accident, the desperate, wake up ultra…we’ve all been there, ha ha.

I haven’t seen any decent “Gouken Videos” that show off his playstyle. I’m having a hard time trying to addapt form Ryu/Sagat to Gouken. Combos and play style are way different.

I scanned the 1st 5 or 7 pages of this thread with no useful videos.

wow…I thought my Gouken sucked.

My brief suggestions:

Boxer - Flip a lot. It really drivers the Boxer crazy. still good boxers are a big pain in the ass

Bison - Block a lot, cr.fp his jump ins, the hitbox of the cr.fp vs Bison jump ins is amazing and you nullify the amazing cross up game of Bison. Just block vs ex jump in your head, if you guess wrong with counter, focus, whatever, say goodbye to half your life and he’ll probably dizzy you. Also jump vertically a lot, you can punish the hell out of him if he misses an slide or the double kick with the palm juggle.

Honda - I like to play guess game with fireballs, then cr.fp his jump ins. Still I have many problems with him too if he gets close to you. Cr.fp Honda jump ins misses a lot surprisingly although it appears to hit him clean.

Ryu - I made a long post of my view on the ryu matchup in the strategies thread. Most people don’t agree with me, but it works.

I have however lots of problems with Abel. It’s one of the few matches I know I will probably not win. The things that give me headaches are:

  1. I can’t control him airborne. Cr.fp works but his crossup kick is amazing and if I miss the cr.fp I get punished a lot, and if I block he’ll probably command throw me
  2. His armor breaking kick drives me nuts. Can’t counter it, most of the times I can’t punish it even on block, ex avoids fireballs, lets him get close to you and pressure with his great throw game. It’s the closest thing to the tiger knee I have seen, he can spam it a lot almost for free.
  3. His ultra does a lot of damage, great distance. Very punishable if he fails, but good players don’t
  4. The roll is really good against fb, even though you can grab him / cr.fp him, still it’s fast enough so that many times I can’t react fast enough to it.
  5. The air grab is quite good to shut down Gouken in the air. ALso the elbow hit is a good antiair and he can combo with it.
  6. I always fail to guess his throw mix game where you have to guess of he’s going to grab you high or low.
  7. Also there’s an Abel combo that drives me crazy, he keeps rolling over and over and hitting me that keeps me in juggle state, in changes direction constantly and I don’t know what to do against it.
