Gouken Videos

Yes… one of the things I went directly into training mode for after this tournament is reading the result of a demon flip dive kick and doing the correct move afterwards - c.lp if it was blocked, c.hp if it hits.

Yes, all palms are punishable by grab, and c.lp or shoryuken by others. If you can get then to block it at close to max range it’s harder to punish, but it’s a long move - you never know how much they’ll move by the time they block it - so it’s really hard to set it up correctly to make it safe.

Yeah, this is one of the things I thought about on paper after the match to try to deal with it - the others being air tatsus to beat lariat, and FADC’ing lp hadouken to get a good punish on lariat.

The main problem in the final match is the RIDICULOUS perfection my opponent is displaying in his reactions. Notice that EVERY SINGLE lp fireball within EX Greenhand range is getting punished by EX Greenhand on reaction. I try to fake him out by whiffing jabs or s.lk or something, but he never falls for it - he only does greenhand when I do hadouken, and he never misses an opportunity to do so - even after 10 minutes of concentrated battle.

It’s like fighting one of the AIs that cheat =P

Guess I misread you there, sorry  There are some people thinking its not worth it… I consider it to be worth it.

Great video SiYkO

Love the way you fought vs Balrog SiYkO, really good match, please keep them coming

I tried that too, so i was very curious watching your vids…
I tried that, but i can’t do it on reaction unless i clearly see the demon flip kick is a counterhit (i’m not a good player… yet…).

The frame data says that c.hp is -6 on block, and s.hp is +2 on block… i doubt it, but seems that s.hp should be a “safer” option if we are not sure the demon flip kick will hit low or deep enough… except if c.hp is cancelled into something.

I hate not to have the game, so i could test this myself. I’m trying to find a good balance between damage and combos and easy to use, because i’m a scrub

And i think someone should make a post with a link to the framedata and make it sticky, i had to google it and i found a weird one and not the shoryuken.com one.

That make sense, and that may be the reason because lp and mp seems “safe”, because we can predict a little better the distance, and don’t hit deep enough to look unsafe to the eyes of everyone. A lot of people won’t punish punishable things if they don’t look punishable

Anyway, even if every palm is punishable bye grab, i have to test if i can tech out or it counts as a “counter” or “reversal”, in such case the tech is denied.

That Zangief was really insane, looks like he is really well trained in fighting vs shoto characters and greenhand on reaction…
…but you fought really well.

Thanks for your answers.

always a pleasure to watch you fight mate
loved the first two vids especially, funny comments XD
"kick that old mo-fo", “who is that guy? who is it?”, last round vs sagat on the back throw “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”
“god damn!” on first kongoshin vs boxer XD
and one guy to the other, “he’s good” "yes he is"
made my day

Also, well played against the last gief, he really looked like a monster.
More gouken for the people!

If not sure, c.hp canceled into lp hadouken is also a fine option. The best bet is to be sure though.

I set a Sagat in training to hold back, and periodically tap jab in a fairly random pattern for 10 seconds. Then when playing back, it’s pretty unpredictable whether or not it will hit. It’s not too hard to react to whether or not it hits here and do c.hp vs c.lp.

It may seem like standing sagat is ‘best case scenario’ for reflexes (since you hit him so early), but it’s not really so. Dive kick has the same hitstun no matter where it hits them, and all you have to do is input c.hp at least 6 frames before the hitstun is over. If you can get it to combo on sagat, then you can get it to combo on a crouching blanka - it doesn’t matter.

mmm, i’m evolving. I only used c.mp into lp hadouken, i didn’t knew i could cancel the c.hp too. thanks.

I’ll try that too along this week, thanks.

How did you place in the tourney Sikyo? And how did you find Gouken stacked up against the rest of the cast in a high-level sense?

We have a tournament coming up in Sydney and I’m tossing up entering the old man in it, but I remain wary of his glaring holes (wakeup) that are ripe for exploiting (empty jump > throw). Naturally this is just an area I need to be mindful of and practice my options, but I’m curious to see how you felt using Gouken in a tournament. Are there any characters/match-ups in particular that gave you problems in the tournament that differed perhaps from those you encounter online? Did you encounter any solid Rufus players?

Its really surprising to me some of the reactions people give all of us Gouken players. He obviously has a certain appeal for all of us, but to many people he’s a completely dismissed character and when they see the old man working his tools they tend to go quiet when they see what he is capable of when used properly.

All that aside, nice matches. I particularly enjoyed the Zangief battles - very tight games. I literally yelled out loud “Oh, no!” in a couple of matches where you whiffed Ultras and wake-up EX tatsumakis and also missed dash > tatsumaki after an EX palm because I can relate EXACTLY to how that feels. Not only is Gouken left vulnerable, but the hang time of his vulnerability is absolutely huge with whole seconds passing by while you await your punishment.

Your style grows smoother with every match you share with us - its a pleasure watching you play and I really appreciate you sharing your clips.

Gamogo, out of curiosity were you the Akuma player who OCV’d 2 teams at Good Games last friday?

You’re all just doing the motion too fast.

Nope, not me. I’m yet to go in and check out the Good Games sessions. I’m a bit hazy as to how it all works.

In fact, I’m yet to actually meet anyone in the Sydney scene beyond online acquaintances though I am tossing up having a shot at OHN8, which sounds like heaps of fun and a good way to meet folks into the game and the fighting game community in Sydney/AU in general.

If you’re a PSN player, add me to your list if you feel like some games mate. My handle is ‘Gamogo’

Yeah he did a really great job. I hate how zangief plays in this game. You could literally take away every move but lariat, spd, c. lp, and EX glove and that match would’ve went exactly the same. Blanka is equally stupid, slide on reaction from anything less than full screen distance.

Good Zangief players know when they are in range for green hand to be reasonably safe.

Gouken’s hadoken startup time is HORRIBLE, making it very easy for an experienced Zangief player to crush it. Don’t throw hado when Z has EX and is any closer than 3/4 screen.

Baiting the slide with fake hado motion or random jab is a nice way to hand out massive punishment on blanka.

It takes three bars but i did this in the night so it may not show that good and it was my phone, its the onlycombo that is 520 - 525 u can put in ultra for more damage but it’s the only damaging combo i use in a match.

I will get some matches up, i now started recording videos with my sony ericsson P1i. I know zangeif player so i’ll put so vid with him.

Nice. I’d use the lp palm to end it if close to the corner though to avoid having your opponent pull a quick recovery after the tatsu.

Sometimes a reset works wonders as well.

Gouken tournament videos are so rare! Thanks for the upload

Three bars? Don’t you FADC after the fireball and the EX Senkugoshoha? Isn’t that five bars?

Nope Trek, the EX Palm launches them with enough time for you to dash normally and land a HK tatsu.

too bad they don’t do publically editable groups any more on youtube.

so i’ve started keeping track of the cool gouken match vids with a playlist. made an easy to remember url for it:

**i’ll try to keep track here and add them as i see them come in. if i’m missing something, send it to me via youtube and i’ll add it to the list!

p.s. if you subscribe to the playlist, you’ll see new additions listed on your homepage as soon as their posted.
