Gouken Videos

Patience is key, You don’t need to neutral jump against Blanka, cr. fp beats his jump ins. For the non meaty ambiguous cross ups like @ :23 seconds walk or dash under and punish/avoid. You can kongo it too, but it’s not necessary when he does that. St. Cl. Hk beats it as well.

I don’t think I can ever stress this enough. Hard Knock Down’s > safe jump oki/reversal stuff is the key to almost all of Gouken’s match ups, especially this one. Gouken can’t beat Blanka in a high paced match. Knock him down, slow him down, and take away his options. The only time I ever struggle against Blanka is when I go away from this and allow him to dictate the match. If you slow him down and try to keep him in wake up situations I think Gouken has a better chance of winning, b/c you’ll be taking away his game of abuse and forcing him to make mistakes.

If he comes forward he will mostly slide, jump, or hop.
-A whiffed/blocked slide nets you an easy cr. roundhouse.
-AA Cr. FP is king! 2-in-1 with lp hado to frame trap him when he lands (if he doesn’t have ex) This sets up your kongo too, just use it wisely.
-Hop- can be beaten consistently by everything but far st. lp and far. st. hp. If telegraphed, you can sweep that bitch before he recovers. It hit’s pretty good too b/c of the active frames. If you are really unsure, just spam standing mp and he’ll either be stuffed by far. or cl. st. mp/ worse case scenario he’ll block and you can just continue to frame trap your way to safety.

You should be able to back throw a blocked rainbow roll without him teching iirc. As fas as his up ball don’t even bother grabbing him, punish his recovery. You can focus attack if he tries it then dash out to punish him.

I normally save kongo to interrupt his block strings when he shows a pattern or for just every now and then to show him I’ll do it once or twice on his jump ins so I can bait more jump ins to hit with cr. fp.

It’s not a reason to use a lot of EX moves against Blanka outside of punishing with combos, FADC’ing to safety, using EX Flip for the occasional quick wake up, after you train him not to use slide when he’s moving forward EX Hado can work pretty well in Goukens zoning strategy.

I always spam cr. lp when I’m not doing any thing else to show them that I will stuff their rush attacks. So it takes away that speed factor that they try to beat you with. You can do this pre-emptively before they even do the move. Spam a couple and watch their reaction. A lot Blanka’s try to roll slide at the beginning of the match, so I almost always spam cr. lp at the beginning of the match (some Blanka’s will try to counter that with slide to be beat cr. lp at the beginning of the match but it’s very very risky for them to do so since it will lead to his ass getting vortexed off the jump.

Honestly, I just look for the knock down and I rush him down, I just do to him what he’d like to do to me, I stay on his ass until he figures a way out (which the only decent wake up reversal he has is EX Roll).

I rarely EX GFlip on wake up against Blanka b/c of that damn electricity on the way down. It’s better to just block and tech vs. him and save the meter. If you think he’s baiting EX Flip, then you can be crafty and use HK Gflip and use the distance and one of it’s options to create some space.

Oh the Blanka Hate Mail i’ve recieved during my day!!! Lol

Also remember once he walks forward into slide range he has no charge, no need to worry about standing to punish a blocked ball. When he has meter bait that EX roll. Always hold forward after a full screen fireball in case he late reacts EX rolls through it. Punish with a half circle back +KK!

I’m not sure what the slide hit box looks like but I’d go look it up and compare it against Gouken’s far st.lk

umm ok i just had to lol and stop watch during that cody fight. his dumb ass just kept walking into Go Hadou’s

I know. I’m pretty sure he is just new to tournament and is getting nerves being down 0-2 though.

Thank you all for the advice and it will be noted in my notebook. Yes Im a nerd!

Oh and shout outs to AE gouken. Cant freaking wait!!!

The Blanka matchup in a nutshell:
[]No crossups, ever. Ever. Don’t do it. No jump-ins or non-meaty demon flips, either.
[
]No fireballs unless you’re sure the Blanka player won’t react with slide, U2, or EX Ball
[]cr.mk beats his jump-ins, otherwise kongo or EX Tatsu. I thing s.mk might be really good at the right range, but that’s a guess.
[
]lp palm punishes both up ball and horizontal ball on block (you already know you have to be standing for horizontal ball, it will still whiff about 5% randomly, but whatever).
[]All of Blanka’s normals lose to focus attack.
[
]Blanka’s cr.hk is very unsafe on block, free cr.hk.
[]On wakeup either block the crossup, kongo it, or try to s.hk it.
[
]cr.mp, s.mp
I’m about 90% sure Blanka’s j.hk just beats Gouken’s cr.hp clean because it hits so damn early. I tested this a while back.

This is a bad matchup for Gouken because he never lands a full combo as a punish, he has trouble anti-airing, and his fireball game is weak.

blanka vs. gouken isn’t that bad.
random lk demon flips make sliding very dangerous, so you can fireball a little more.

The slide can be on reaction. It’s really easy because Gouken’s fireballs have lots of startup.

Blanka can slide, EX Up Ball, neutral jump fierce, cr.mp, or cr.hp demon flips even from far away.

There is a range where Blanka can’t punish Gouken’s fireballs on reaction with slide when you’re about 2/3rd screen but anything closer and you’re hosed.

I’m sure you know what st.lk for Gouken looks like. If you don’t it is easy to find. Just type Gouken hitbox data.

Vs Blanka

Learn how to take his jump in. Use c.mk. Do not use c.hp cause his j.mk beats it clean. Also learn to the timing for anti-cross up parry. Blanka love close up j.mk cross up cause his jump land fast and give you less room to dash away.

Also please learn option select. For a throw happy match up I recommend c.lp + lk + mk. Lk is not fast enough to beat most of his normal. Mk come out one extra frame faster plus it beat electricity cleanly vs lk training with it.

Also don’t jump in is very right, unless you do meaty dive kick or df… don’t bother. If you have very good timing there is a spot where cross up lk beats electric AND ex up ball. But it is very tight. Like 1 or 2 frame tight. not worth the risk since you do so little damage.

Learn how to punish his ultra. Both of them.

Learn how to counter rainbow roll. If it got over your head, focus and forward dash then try mix punish, but timing is tight too.

Try bait his EX ball or slide, learn the effective distant.

Blanka doesn’t have a good normal to punish a well spaced lp palm if he doesn’t have charge. Try use that to make him not to focus too much. But slides beats palm very cleanly

If he is hoping around like mad, don’t mash. He really can only hop in two direction. Learn the spacing. A late c.lp + lk + mk. Lk usually tech his throw or beats his hop clean unless he do EX upball.

Something to take advantage of, Blanka have a fairly slow lp and lk. So his crouch teching is on the weak side. Plus he is a charge character and he can’t really EX cancel anything. If you can meaty him well, do the throw / hp / low parry options to make him guess. Blanka player isn’t used to this kind pressure and don’t have many good option to deal with it beside EX upball, but you can usually block and punish that.

New Gouken

Fairly new Gouken and rarely get to play (few times a month) but I’m kind of proud of my crappy low level play in the second round of this video xD

Can someone go into training mode and do cross up mk into cl.mp -> c.lp xx tatsu and see if it hits GUILE, like in that vid. This link is possible now and I’m just curious if it hits Guile since cl.HP xx Tatsu whiffs on Guile thanks to hitbox issues

Hmm? I didn’t ask for a crouching mp

I said cross up MK, close (standing, crouching doesn’t have a close/cl version) mp linked into cr.lp xx tatsu.

Does that work on Guile in SSF4? I’m asking because it works in AE as per the video above vs Guile.

I’m trying to determine is the hitbox has changed at all on tatsu. USSBalls said Tatsu hits low now and I’m just looking for any evidence at all.

I’m assumming you want this checked on a crouching Guile?
