waking up with focus helps a lot against fuerte.
it covers slide, over head and splash.
you can almost cover all of his pressure options with focus or jump.
Focus will work on maybe one knockdown, dont get to predictable with it though good elfs will run up throw you or fajita buster you if they see you wake up focus everytime.
random jumping and hitting mp vs elf is a good way to get ultra’d your gouken dont ever jump lol.
I’ve found jump to be a terrible option vs good el fuertes. If they splash and you jump they guacamole you.
thats why i said “almost”!
you have a sick fuerte brother.
Thanks mayne your prob the best gouken i’ve played, massive crosby was another good one but havent played him in awhile.
Why is it impossible to lp/mp/hp palm FADC to tatsu but it’s possible to do it off of kongo???
Because they have different hit properties.
I’m guessing it’s some juggle-state issue within the SFIV engine. Anti-air focus attack and the properly spaced kongo knock the opponent in aesthetically similar manner, but count as counter hits (?) which give the juggle state property? I’d like to know the answer to that.
Maybe you were asking the question in a I-know-why-but-I’m-saying-it’s-not-right sense. Either way, that would be a solid buff if he could do more mid-screen FADC antics. FADC > lp. palm after countering a grounded opponent midscreen would be pretty useful too.

If it had float knockdown, he could do what’s been said or reset with st.jab. Probably.
He’s a couple of numbers/values/properties away from being really good in my opinion. I am interested to see how he’s been tweaked given that he’s a relatively unpopular character, without a strong userbase like Sagat, Ryu et al.
They want to reward you for doing the harder shit with more visually impressive tighter combos.
Jk not sure
Thanks Guys. I just think they got alot of shit right with Gouken and a whole lot of shit wrong. I just feel like you should be able to juggle your specials period if you are FADC’ing, that’s what the hell we are canceling the move for right??? To link into a move… You are penalized already by using your super meter and damage scaling.
I suppose giving Gouken jab links to EX Palm would be a bit dangerous, and make him too OP, but every one else can do it… It’s not like you can palm > FADC full ultra anways, and if you EX to do it you need a 3 bars (save EX Palm > Ultra for those of you with quick hands and perfect execution).
It irrates me to no end that he really doesn’t have any hit confirm to combo…it’s all do it now or lose it (very high risk - high reward shit), so I may guess wrong and FADC after palm only to see the palm hit the opponent fly and I can’t do shit but go to a wake up strategy AND i’ve just lost 2 EX Bars!!!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… that damn blanka … his electricity is perhaps the gayest shit in the game… yes Gayer than Zangief interupting your combo with Ultra (at least he can only do this with an ultra meter)… this damn blanka can really just use electricty the entire match… and guess what… LP hado is no use, the shit goes right over his head… you wanna DF kick him cool… you better make sure it his him in the feet before he starts up or it’s christmas time all over again for the old man. Kongo works at point blank… but if he’s not you better back dash to create some space and hope the don’t stop pressing buttons before you attack. Safe Palm him out of it… not a chance. cr lk to Tatsu him out of it… LOL yeah right you will whiff… try crossing him up with mk (fail)… You CAN throw him during start up (better be quick). WTF… this fucker can just sit in front of you and spam punch > electricity and your safest bet is to just block and to normal him out of it… you’ll spend most your time blocking. With the other shoto’s no Blanka would even dare try that shit… FB wins and SRK wins… with Gouken all I can really beat it with is a fucking normal?? This is very gay.
Blanka can’t do shit about safe dive kicks. Just practice the timing because it’s a bit different for Blanka than others. His electricity is a bit spawny from point blank, but max range sweep sets up dive kick pressure again. LV3 FA can work as well against weaker Blankas that seem to think electricity is invincible. You can vortex the cunt to death; two wrong guesses and he’s done, whatever he does is punishable if you safe dive kick his wakeup.
The only thing that Gouken has a hard time with is people running all over him. If you can take control of the screen early on then Blanka really doesn’t have much to go on.
As far as hit confirms go, start using cl.strong if you don’t already. You can link cr.forward xx Jab Palm on hit and either blockstring out or cr.forward xx MK Flip Dive Kick on block. The dive kick, on most characters, becomes a crossup with this setup. Then the next time you do it use LK Flip for a throw. I’ve practised this quite a lot lately and it’s not impossible. Just takes some practice.
Actually, there’s a fuckton of mixup following a cl.strong.
YEEEEEEEEAH! All you say is true!!! It just sucks that if I play with Ken I can just FB or SRK the damn thing instead of relying on knocking him down… I suppose I can just take advantage of the first sweep knock down and just don’t let up from there. I usually don’t have trouble with Blanka, but I have lost to about 3 of them in the past week, and they all were spamming electricity. I blame 70% on the game and 30% on me LOL.
I do need to start using the hit confirm method you described > palm/mix up, this is definitely another blockstring I need to add to my rep (you can never have too many of those).
Granted I just picked Gouken up, but he seems to get absolutely demolished by anyone with an ounce of aggression in their offense.
Nah… you need to use him a bit more… even though we complain a bit about his drawbacks, you can’t just wrecklessly attack him. He can easily use his opponents offense against them, except when they are just spamming jabs, then you have to block or retreat and wait for an opening.
He really needs the teleport not Akuma. LOL.
Speaking of overly aggressive, what do you guys do against spammy Balrogs? I feel like I have an easier time against “better” Balrogs that choose their time to attack. But the ones that constantly spam out jab/strong/fierce/roundhouse from sweep range and then tick-throw and randomly headbutt/overhead me screw me all up. I can never tell what they’re gonna do next and so many of his moves have higher priority. How do you guys deal with this lame crap?
Distance yourself and LP hado from full screen if the try tap or pretty much any move that advances them thru or over fb LP palm will swat them if they go for over head try forward throw make him get in on you swat his empty jumps to force him to try and generate offense
Yeah, that. The thing about Rog is that the startup on everything other than jab and cr.rh sucks. So not only do you not have a reason to be near him because of your crappy jab and his awesome jab, you have every reason to use that time to backdash. Outside that stupid jab, you can easily block anything he has. Better yet, you can proactively punish just about anything he does to try and mix it up with the overhead or sweep dash punches once you’ve gotten used to dealing with it on reaction.
It’s a weird matchup, but the bottom line is that distance is his worst enemy and your greatest asset. Primarily because even when you can’t hit him with fireballs, Gouken’s recovery gives him some leeway in using them to bait responses that are less than ideal because that distance removes your slow normal disadvantages. Treat him like a slightly gimpier Gief.
Just wait that shit out. Normals don’t do chip damage so, make him impatient. You can also back dash like mentioned before but once he’s reached max range, I normally fish for a focus attack. Once you hit him with a couple of these, they will try to do the armor break rush punches that are punishable. I normally 2 in 1 to tatsu to send him back to the other side of the screen when this happens. Then immediately follow up with fireball and frame trap with a demon flip to begin your pain train and don’t let up.
He can be safe jumped all day long, even though his EX headbutt has a fast start up and some invincible frames. Once he is at a distance you can jab or throw him out of all of his rush punches.
It sucks but when he get’s in close Gouken can’t out jab him, so you just have suck it up and wait for a mistake. If they are very agressive and they don’t throw alot you can always Kongo his pressure strings. I normally block low to encorage the overhead rush punch (that shit is very punishable, but you have to train yourself to recognize it). I normally block low and just look for the overhead since blocking low allows you to block the rest of his rush punches.
You can also cross him up after knocking him down, and option select palm if he tries to head butt to get away, you will catch him before he recovers from the head butt (if you got an EX it sets up your bnb palm > hado > df frame trap mix up or you can just use a reset after the EX palm.
How do you even unlock gouken? It’s different everywhere t___________t!
