shinsho is a pretty awesome ultra.
it could be completely useless as an anti air and still be an awesome ultra.

I would never try to aa with hk tatsu, only use it in FADC combos and corner combos.

Meh, besides damage shin sho I think is a pretty bad ultra. Backthrow and ex palm is what saves the day. Those moves are amazing. Well at least backthrow used to be.

How so? You whiff or trade with ultra…you lose health and ultra.

You whiff hk tatsu, you lose the same health as whiffing ultra but keep your ultra

You trade hk tatsu, you win with ultra followup.

Not saying I use hk tatsu as anti air…I don’t.

hk tatsu is slower than ultra.
i think ultra is 11 on startup while hk tatsu is 13.
i could be remembering that incorrectly, but ultra is also invincible on startup.

Getting stuffed depends on spacing. I tried this out in training for a good hour or so of just hk tatsu looking for trades. The move sucks, but if you trade it is big damage.

Regardless of that, what other suckish options Gouken has for an anti-air, they’re still more viable than a HK Tatsu. The startup on it is just too much, a whiff on it spells doom.

not only the slowness and the lack of invulnerability, you can hit with hk tatsu and still get punished.

I’ve started playing Oni. And just a little anecdote, I was fighting a very strong albeit tickthrow happy ryu. I went even with gouken, but when I switched to oni, he really had to start respecting the fuck outta me. I won with decisively with oni.

i rarely use HK tatsu in fadc combos because it’s shitty hitbox whiffs completely on most characters. i almost always go with lk tatsu.

Funny you mentioned Oni. I was playing at my local session yesterday and it was hilarious. I chose Oni and I did exactly three things on opponents wake up. Tick throw, delayed DP to hit tick throws and upkicks from Yun, and block. Went 10-1. I was mashing DP in his blockstrings and combos as well. Wakeup DP everytime tilll he respected it.

Ridiculous.

Never did a single hit confirm with him. Oh and I also did the retarded HK slash all over the place.

It’s not the hitbox, it’s the frames of activation and how they reel during those frames. I’m pretty sure all tatsu hitboxes are the same except for EX tatsu, which I believe is a bit bigger.

You can test this out by opening up training mode and seeing how st.hp/cr.hp/cr.mp xx ?? tatsu is character specific. Some characters more than 1 tatsu will work, other characters just 1 will work, and still yet none will work except for EX tatsu.

EX tatsu is 7 frames, just like LK tatsu, so for one to whiff and one to hit they have to have different hitbox sizes. The others whill whiff because the opponents hurtbox will not overlap with various tatsu hitboxes on certain frames of their reel animation.

I played a Zangief yesterday it was kind of funny.
He tried jumping at me and doing U1 on my wakeup, but I had already input LK Tatsu before he activated it, and I totally hit him out of it.
The next round, same thing happened with EX Tatsu but this time my foot was already about to meet his face as he activated it XD

Eh tatsu is throwable until airborne. No idea how lk tatsu Canbeat uab.

It was chance, I guess.
Like when the ultra cinematic was playing, I had already input the LK Tatsu prior to that, but he activated his U1 right when he landed (did two 360s airborne and PPP on landing).
To be honest I thought I was screwed but the Tatsu just popped up and beat him, hahaha.

lag does some crazy shit. Playing against eastsidemario, he did lk tatsu on my wakeup when I did EX. Straight out beat me and I was like WTF
