U2 is still good on paper. Making it’s full charge taking less time and make it come out faster would be enough for me to try use it more.
U1 is still going to be better for most of the match up, though. They will have to give U2 some damage buff to ever replace U1. Not saying U1 is a good ultra. It is just better then U2.
gouken’s u1 is godly because of backthrow and ex palm.
ryu’s u2 would be just as good if he had those abilities.
as it is, no one uses ryu’s u2, but ultimately john grimm is right, gouken’s u1 is godly.
If I get regularly get backthrows then I might as well keep using U1 for the damage boost. Plus it has enough opportunities for combos (EX Palm Strike > FADC > U1 is good for the amount of meter burned).
U2 would be used a lot more by people if it had some practical SF3 Denjin functionality, like causing gray damage on block (that fits into the SFIV system) and it can cause a stun on block if the charge is large enough. That’ll make it on par with U1 imho.
If your opponent is concerned about getting trapped during the match, then it will create a conscious decision for the opponent to keep a stock of EX for his invincible reversal. Plus a few characters have teleports on top of this, so it won’t always be the go-to ultra.
Regarding a palm strike that’s similar to rufus’ command normal. They could do something like having lp. tatsu be a combo-able reversal (reversal in that lk. tatsu does not fly high off the ground, and can be linked with jabs). I tend to juggle enough people with hados in midscreen that warrants the current lp. palm to keep its small traveling distance (such that mp. palm would take too long to hit).
I’m saying U1 is not a good ultra by itself because it is pretty substandard compare to everyone else. It does not do the most damage (Adon, El, Abel easily does more) and it is way harder to land then any of those. It even come out slower then Ryu’s U2.
The reason you feel that it is godly is all due to his backthrow and juggles ability. I guess this is technicality, but an Ultra being good vs an Ultra being suitable for the character is two different things. At the moment I felt that U1 is great for Gouken and shouldn’t be changed.
U2 would be a lot better if it just travelled faster. Seriously you can reaction jump it for free right now. No need to block it and eat pathetic stun/chip.
If it was Shinkuu Hadouken fast, it would also be amazing for punishment.
wake up shenanigans. you have time to walk up and set your demonflip up to be a crossup, and jump mk and jump lk can look almost ambiguous… granted it wont work all the time on certain characters wakeups, but you land a hit into a combo after denjin thats the end of the match.
gouken always has backthrow, it is an extension of u1.
no one else has a meterless, 5 frame start up, unblockable ultra like gouken does.
i land u1 by accident because of backthrow.
no other character accidentally gets a 500 damage ultra while stand teching.
Backthrow to U1 is so hilarious, it really is. I don’t land it all that often against really good players, but I will catch a few here and there with it. Honestly, I wish it was a command grab (HCF/B punch) so an EX version could be a faster startup.
On it’s own U1 does 503 damage with full ultra. Adon’s U1 does 510 damage with full ultra. 7 damage is nothing to bother with, it’s nothing. Fuerte does not have an ultra that does as much damage, U2 being close at 500. Abel’s U1 also only does 500. Gouken’s U1 is one of the strongest in the game with very little competition, juggles off of everything for full damage, has gobs of invincibility making it a great reversal, and is fast enough to punish things like Ryu’s cr.HP.
It is by no means a bad ultra in any regard, in fact in just about EVERY regard it’s one of the best ultras in the game. There isn’t another character in the game who gets anything like the raw power and comboability of Shin Shoryu. The only reason it’s even slightly difficult to land is because of Gouken’s lack of links. If he could even just jab > jab > tatsu you’d be able to land his U1 every round, which would be devastating.
Which is one of the best qualities of Gouken IMO. The fact that he threatens Ultra simply by attempting to tech is a great asset indeed. If there is one character you DO NOT want to miss a throw tech against…it’s Gouken.
