Yeah this is what I was gonna say. For the mainstream ‘spectators’ to truly spectate and enjoy spectating the game, they would have to have knowledge of the game and enjoy every part of it rather than just the flashy stuff and the supers.
Thus taking fighting games to become a mainstream spectator sport is kind of an oxymoron. But this is too obvious not to notice…so yes, people only really do it for the money.

If you have not played Third Strike the Daigo Parry video isn’t shit. Lebron James dunking the ball is something 99% of people know they can’t ever do. To a casual fighting game fan, all he did was hold back and when Chun finished he countered with his own move. The wow factor was there because people knew at that time how it was a near impossible feat.
Tournaments keep new blood coming in and keeping them interested. People do care about tournaments and then when there are big matchups in it, it becomes epic. Having top player exhibitions is WWF.
What is he thinking seriously? Did he think he would get no backlash from the FGC spewing that garbage? Does he have no choice but to paint it that way to the media?
Either way the community will continue growing and slowly get more mass appeal doing the same thing it has done for years through tournaments and other such events: get more people to play.

lol, BlazBlue definitely has footsies, the thing is that there are so many other things to look out for in that game, making footsies have less of an overall impact than they would in say, SF. Don’t compare how Americans might play BlazBlue (mashBlue style) to how the game really works. You know how many people mash kof out there?
I don’t mind that he said" who cares about Kof12". Because honestly, I think it’s going to flop, the game just seems really inferior to other kofs out there. He’s probablyl right that in maybe amonth, most people would stop playing the game except some die-hard SNK fans.
I’m sure this guy, Gootecks, is great in his scene/circle, but I really don’t have much adoration or enthusiasm about him or his gameplay. Yes, he’s a good player, but I wouldn’t consider him an innovator (definitely a contributor) to the fighting genre. He’s someone that I consider an opportunist. Reading through his interview, I get the feeling that his agenda is to promote himself first through SFIV. Case in point, the below excerpts (w/ the bold parts in question):

(My Response: While it’s nice to promote yourself, he could be a little more subtle about it. A lot of people here enjoy fighting games for what it is, if your good, respect will be given (money earned as well) … Simple as that)
Gootecks: I believe this is only the tip of the Street Fighter wave. Where I really see it going, if we can get Street Fighter 4 included on MLG, because of their connections with ESPN we can get more coverage. This is just the tip of the iceberg. I dont really think the tournament format is the only way Street Fighter can work, and Im not even convinced its the best way Street Fighter can work. Thats why I did Bar Fights.
(My Response: This is SF. Tournaments and accessibility is what define the true spirit of the genre! Of course there are superstars (Daigo, JWong, Buktooth, etc.), but if all that existed were top players showcasing their skills at events, then believe you me, I would not be tuning in.)
The most stupid thing about the whole interview was this comment: So I think Street Fighter 4 can do the same thing for games like Tekken 6, Blaz Blue, and maybe King of Fighters 12 even though I dont know who cares about King of Fighters 12.

Oh and this guys been trying to kill off every game that isn’t SF4 just so the focus of everything thats been in the SF community for the lats 15 years goes solely onto SF4. That is really sad to tell all the new players how bad all the old games like ST, 3rd Strike, etc are just to promote SF4.
And believe me, he ain’t that popular in the circle either.
