Why? Back when the CGS was still around, DOA4 had the most view out of all the different games they had.
I was kind of under the assumption that league play is the direction that it is already going.
Arcade Infinity had that season with rankings and stuff, right? I imagine that this concept can expand to regions. For instance, New York City has ranking battles, Philadelphia has ranking battles, Pittsburgh has ranking battles, Los Angeles has ranking battles, etc. Everyone can know where each region stands thanks to the magic of the internet. Then, national rankings can be decided by these rankings in conjunction with occasional majors, such as Final Round, Devestation, and Season’s Beatings. Finally, Evo will be the ultimate annual championship that can have seeding for the people that are ranked really high nationally, as well as seeding for international players (through a method I have no idea about). Naturally, anyone can enter tournaments regardless of ranking.
As far as fighting games being a spectator sport… Eh. Crawl before you walk.
Invitationals over tournaments is a scary idea. People will not be dubbed top players based on skill. You think G4 contacted Gootecks because they heard he took ONE tournament back in Febuary? More likely because gootecks.com says Gootecks is pro.
Before gootecks, there was no such thing as a “pro street fighter player” only “tournament players” and Justin Wong.
Gootecks is the very first pro street fighter player.
I thought “Pro” meant you had sponsor backing? Which technically means Empire Arcadia no?
Technically you are right. But ever since sfiv came out, people throw the word pro around all the time to use for any top player that are known. There are tons of scrubs in empire arcadia. Just check out “dayasha” on youtube.
Basically, you aren’t a pro unless you were a top player in ONLY sfiv before Gootecks came up.
And you aren’t a pro, unless you are part of Gooteck’s top 8 seeds for devastation.
I don’t understand the logic of wanting to get into WCG or MLG. Everyone that watches/follows those events already knows what Street Fighter is and 99% of them have played it. Nobody that isn’t a gamer follows them and that’s why they always get piss poor ratings when they get on TV. There isn’t a single game in america that grew because it was picked up by WCG or MLG. Games like Counter-Strike and Quake 3 Arena were already worldwide phenomenons long before WCG and MLG were even around. As a matter of fact, wasn’t VF 5 on one of them? That really helped it’s sales in the US. The name Street Fighter is already way bigger then WCG or MLG so it makes no sense to use them to make Street Fighter bigger.
Viscant and Elliott have owned the thread. Tournaments have been the lifeblood of the FGC. The spirit of open competition is what has kept fighting games alive, viabrant, and self sufficient even through the lean years when these games have not had the best corporate support behind them.
The idea that tournaments don’t matter or that the future of SF is in exhibition matches strikes directly against the soul of the community. I’m all for bigger and better things for SF, but don’t be so quick to put all your eggs in one basket with one of these pro leagues. Every single pro league in the west has folded eventually, most without ever turning a profit. That’s not hating; it’s a fact. Esports is a brutal business, and it’s not clear at all that the US is ready to accept a mainstream pro league.
Elliot and Viscant are the truth.
Gootecks is a tool.
Street Fighter IV is a great game.
Who cares about KOFXII?? Lets see…
Okay time for me to chime in, you all knew I would. Now I am going to keep this as political as possible.
Gootecks you are respected in the SF scene for what you do to help the SF scene, but as you are respected in the SF scene, so am I in the SNK Scene.
Who the fuck cares about KOFXII? That’s a pretty bad, malinformed statement by yourself. Why don’t you check the people that preregged for KOF12 at ShinBlanka’s Southeast Regionals?? SF4 and KOFXII have the most entries over BlazBlue and anything else.
So who the fuck cares about KOFXII? Apparently a lot of people do.
Over 100 people actually showed up to the KOFXII National…*apparently even shocking Mr. Wizard *who thought only like 20 or so would show.
So who the fuck cares about KOFXII? Apparently a lot of people do.
DEVASTATION capped the Tournament at 16 though we had Over 30 that signed up for it at that particular event.
So who the fuck cares about KOFXII? Apparently a lot of people do.
Whats the moral of the story Gootecks? Stick to Street Fighter, and stick to talking about things you know about, rather than things you have little knowledge about.
Don’t get me wrong, I respect what you have done for SF4, but you talking about KOF like you know what you are talking about is like me talking about Street Fighter…
Get my drift???
It’s one thing to be gungho over SF and be into what you like, it’s another to talk bad about a game you have no knowledge about and advertise that to others!

When will people realize that he’s in it just for the money and with a “smart” business prospect the more feathers he ruffles and attention he gains the more popular he becomes.
Is he great at SF? no… Does he make sure that everyone knows him and is turning a profit off of it? Hell yeah.
If no one had called me and told me about this I wouldn’t have known about it.
-DG
See DG It’s all marketing.
I’ll get you that list of MVS carts by Monday as well. Been busy as hell with work.
Honestly KOF has been pretty small compared to sf in the states, thats all he meant, get over it.
You think I don’t know that? I promote SNK, that’s what I do and been doing for the past three-four years. I think I know more about SNK and KOF than Gootecks, so I think he needs to say what he means and not leave it open to interpretation. He said who the fuck cares about KOFXII? I countered that argument. KOFXII is making a splash right now moreso than any other KOF in the US. Gootecks is talking about things he knows very little about…
Plus he didnt mention anything about other KOFs did he? He said who the fuck cares about 'KOF**12 **'didnt he?
Once again he is talking about things he has very little knowledge about…
Let’s just face that…
MrSNK- Please do my friend!!! EVO is around the corner!

I actually thought that the majority of you guys wanted this so called esports thing,
i guess that was pretty ignorant of me, but some of the views here are pretty refreshing.
The question he answered pertained to the new games that have been coming out. KOFXII just so happens to be one of those new games. There was no mention of any other SNK games in that question.
Anyway, Viscant is the only smart poster in this thread.
You don’t get it man. If it’s by invite only then you can cater the brackets and people you want in to fight and it also make the underdog (us) not even bother wanting to practice for major tournaments if it’s by someone’s invite only.
And I can speak for most of us that no one wants to see the same 8-32 people fight over and over again, if that were the case we’d all watching Monday night Raw.
Edit: Looks like I should have read Viscants post.
On a spectator note though: How can you have people watch something they can only understand by playing?
