Gootecks Interview

It’s more than what you’ve done. People really need to stop bagging on him, seriously. He’s just trying to promote SFIV more…
I’d have to agree that he is pretty arrogant, but he is also just trying to follow his passion.

I don’t think that’s that much of a problem. Even the casual audience will dabble in street fighter or at least a similar game and will understand how games play out. Not to mention, even if they don’t understand why they are waiting, they might find it funny with witty commenting (djWheat is bangin’).

although a part of me doesnt agree with mainstreaming fighting games, but thats just that part of me wanting something i fucks with to not get raped by commercializing it, but thats all idealistic blah.

really, you dont need commentary with specific hard core knowledge. you need a mixture of comedy, hype, and knowledge. i didnt understand shit about frame rates, resets, glitches, etc…, when i was young going to the arcade, but i spectated because i knew someone was losing, and everyone was getting hype about it. i understood the game enough to know, oh shit, thats hard to do, or thats tight, but i didnt have a deep understanding of the shit, and i was still like, this is hype. look at all the people around the machine. humans are very retarded. just gather ten people around a single cab, and strangers will walk in just to see whats going on. i saw that shit at the mall all the time when that arcade was poppin. i mean, adults too, not just youngins.

when you walk past an arcade, and you think, oh its an arcade, but you hear ooohs, and aaaahs like your at a bar watching a boxing match, it will make anyone stop. my opinion

i understand the game, and that bores me to death, but you do what you gotta do to win, but really, i dont like that shit either. rush that shit down. lol. you die, shit happens, its a game.

for what. sf4 has enough exposure, and will not be as hype a year from now. hes trying to get you money, and himself money (if your a top player) , but the way he comes off, most people just dont like. his overall view is more like, here are the people i consider top, and lets do exhibition type shit and get paid off of it. fuck tournaments, and you little guys who want to try to be good. gootecks is not your bro, bro.

Seriously, that’s not a problem at all. The people who have problem with matches like that are scrubs. Scrubs are people who constantly like to see a lot of flashy shit going on every second of the match. They’ll say some shit like “why didn’t he do Balrog 10 hit combo”. or “these guys suck, that guy can’t even do Honda’s ultra”. These are people who look at matches to see shit that they can’t do themselves, so they expect a flashier element to higher level matches.

It’s odd because casual players understand the waiting match more than a casual player would. I remember YEARs ago when I was in high school and playing at an arcade one day. This one guy was beasting everyone with Zangief, and I just harrassed him with Guile and sonic booms. The spectator thought it was awesome, because he had saw Zangief pummel people before I got on, and saw what I was doing as a legit strategy.

Scrubs are the only ones who will say “dude, sonic booming all day is gay man”. Casual players just use logic when watching matches, and that makes it exciting for them. Only scrubs really critique the stuff seen on those matches

I don’t understand why people think Street Fighter needs promoting. Everybody already knows what Street Fighter is. It was a pop culture phenomenon in the early 90s. Everybody that plays video games has played it. It might not be on the level of Mario but it’s right below. It sold 14 million copies on the SNES/Genesis (if you combine all three versions of the game) which is more then any Halo or Final Fantasy or GTA game. People already know Street Fighter and have made up their minds on it. It doesn’t need any promoting.

Gootecks you need to diversify yo bonds, nigga

Whatup Gootecks. Have you signed a contract with ESPN to market SF4 to the masses yet? You making dat cold hard cash in the spotlight that you’ve always wanted? I bet you are!

What’s KOFXII? More like SFXII.

Don’t forget about the first match where boobootecks was crying towards the end in a casual match because he messed up or something.

SF IV is great.

I guess we figured out who cares about KOF XII now didn’t we?

When you make yourself out to be a celebrity.

People will treat you like a celebrity.

Any publicity is good publicity.

Gootecks is the Hercule/Mr.Satan of fighting games.

This post is sex.

So much hate for Gootecks lol. The guy is just trying to get sf4 out to the masses. Sure… hes promoting himself a lot along the way, but in the end, hes nothing without SF4, the game that NEEDS more hype and competetion.

Just way too much over-analyzation methinks.

The difference in pro-gaming is described as being “accepted” vs “not-accepted” like it is in korea. I think it’s flattering to think that people actually care so much… the answer is in another question, when asked how much he plays, he says “not so much”…

The truth is as opposed to PC hardware, or a console game like halo that has 800k people playing every 24 hours, SF just does not have the avenues at this time to support a pro gamer. Ironically because the bar is so low, a lot of players could call themselves “pro gamers”. but what does it mean? I don’t think this interview answers that question, and there is a reason it doesn’t.

The situation with MLG and WCG is again confusion, in one question he mentions that Quake opened the door for other games, but then later mentions that SF4 should be adopted into MLG, a league primarily devoted to halo. While i’m not saying they shouldn’t adopt it, ultimately the competitive success of a game is based on it’s ability to drive it’s own league, and secondarily on it’s relationships with other leagues. Lets look at some of the games in WCG:

TrackMania Nations Forever (1v1) ? (PC)
Red Stone (2v2) ? (PC)
Carom3D (1v1) ? (PC)
Wise Star 2 (1v1) ? (Mobile)
Asphalt 4 (1v1) ? (Mobile)
Dungeon & Fighter ? (PC) (Promo Game)

Are they going to take over SF4 anytime soon because they are in WCG? I am pro “playing SF4”, but that’s because it brings more prizes and opportunities to the players, just like any other tournament.

And now we have the famous quote:

The UFC started as a tournament league, then it became a promotional league started with many of those tournament fighters. The UFC currently funnels fighters from TUF, a reality show where competitors are placed in a tournament, and where the winner plays in the pro circuit. They also move fighters over from Pride, who held their own tournaments previously. Noone is against exhibitions, but most of the great matches in SF and MMA are either in a tournament. or exhibitons between tournament champions, people do care about the tournaments.

Even though the WWE features scripted bouts, one of the turning points was when Vince made those exhibitions appeal to everyone instead of the macho male demographic. I’m not sure a ‘barfight’ is the same type of event (disclaimer: barfights was a very fine event, it’s just not the same thing).

The other thing that the WWE did which I think is crucial for the SF scene, is that they stopped letting people market the event as a sport, and let it stand on it’s own merit.

Video games have an advantage over sports, and I think the more we try to lump ourselves in with sports, by calling our leagues e-sports, by cherry picking convenient elements from sports like coaches and drafts and seeding without understanding their purpose, we lose our advantage and basically become a xfl minus the football.

Sports, MMA, WWE, and many other entities have something in common, they didn’t copy for the sake of copying, they didn’t focus on why people won’t accept them, they focused on building their own unique brand. We need to do the same.

Woah, I’ve never seen so many people hating on a guy trying to make a living. News flash, he doesn’t have a day job, the success of marketing himself and street fighter is what makes him pay the bills.

What exactly has he done that’s hurt the community or scene at all? Podcasts that he did for free for like … 8 months? The written guide he made for 3s players adjust to sf4 for free. The “From scrubs to winners” helping out two very new players become very solid… which from what I know… was for … free. Getting live stream at numerous events, helping out AI tournaments, helping out SBO quals, throwing Barfights… I’m sure there’s more.

Honestly its fucking gross reading this thread, people bitching about shameless promotion after everything he’s done for free to help get this shit get big. What have you faggots hating done? Nada.

sf>gf

kept playing the game

This.

Also if this were anyone else they’d be right here defending/explaining/or even just telling the haters to fuck off. This thread will sadly end up like the Watson vs Gootecks MM thread.

Actually, Viscant has done plenty for the fighting game scene. He was one of the first people on srk that shared information about how to improve back when this website was still in its infancy. At that time, top players played cloak-and-dagger games concerning their oh-so-secret “strats.” What’s more, reread his post, pretending you know nothing about him, and then reread your response–you’re making a caricature of his position. He’s not even criticizing Gootecks’s career decisions or anything like that–read it in the context of the DSP drama two years ago.

I’ve benefited a great deal from Gootecks’s podcast, but I benefited even more from visiting Socal arcades and leveling up from competition. I lived in Socal for about three years playing 3s about once every two weeks at a small university arcade before I worked up the courage to visit one of the more well known 3s arcades–I owe some of that to Gootecks’s promotional efforts. So I appreciate what he’s doing.

But.

If you’ve listened to Gootecks’s podcast, then you’ll remember from the interview with Ponder that nobody makes their living running EVO or hosting this website. It’s a labor of love. Even old tournament players that have managed to find jobs in the gaming industry slogged it out with blood, sweat and tears–any promotion that was done to grow the community by these folks was never about a career or money. If Gootecks wants to make a career out of fighting games, great–but he has to show that he understands what has been driving the culture here for all these years. Reread Seth Killian’s Domination 101 articles for god’s sake–it’s all there. SF has a fanbase because people play the exact same game with the exact same rules as the top players. It’s not a spectator sport, and I dread the day it ever becomes one.
