I guess a better way to put it is that Trish lets you play Viper under ideal conditions - you’re playing her against a cornered opponent who is being setup to eat multiple unblockables in a row. Trish lets you shoot for that without having to risk Viper in the process. You still get to play Viper even if Trish fails to get it started.
But you do raise a good point though about if Trish dies, Viper is probably being subjected to a nasty mix-up which she wouldn’t be risking if she was on point.
Choosing your team order at match start makes a lot of sense, and I like Trish first against characters like Wolverine, Wesker, She-Hulk, Zero, Ammy and even Viper. Trish’s worst match-ups are Magneto and Dante IMO (still winnable tho), so it makes sense to flip to either Viper or Dante if you’re more comfortable there.
Viper/Trish/Dante also has the easiest Viper one-hit kills in the world, even in Ultimate. Viper combo -> Burst Time -> Round Harvest, raw tag in Dante, do his full string of OTGs. If they still aren’t dead after 1 million damage, he can add in a super as well.
The downside is that if Viper dies, Trish/Dante feels weak to me until you can get it reordered to Dante/Trish.
Yeah, from all that I have seen, I am seriously thinking of replacing x-23 with Viper. Her OTG assist just seems better. Plus you get to EX people after a Round Harvest. I am starting to think Hawkeye’s horizontal arrow assist can be pretty good for both her and Viper.
Sigh, I wish I could find a spot for Jill on the team, just because Jill and Viper also get along well - have you guys seen the mix ups Viper’s OTG assist can set up for Jill? Scary stuff. Oh well, I guess that’s why some people have multiple teams.
I think the X-23 team is more about setting up that Dirt Nap setup on one character. The Round Harvest unblockables just give you an easy way to kill characters while building up meter to get to that point. Dante has really nasty setups on incoming characters too, and then for their last character you can just Dirt Nap, X-Factor and close it out.
Hrm, I guess you could but I think Trish/X-23/Dante is doing it right. When you’re in control, you’ll be raw tagging into Dante after Round Harvests. So hopefully it’ll mostly be Trish and Dante on point until you actually want X-23 in.
But if you’re not in control and if Trish fails to get it going and dies early, then X-23 comes in with XF2 and some meter stocked. And that’s really good. If she gets a hit, she can pop XF2 and easily kill them without spending meter, and then Dirt Nap the next character into a full combo which also kills.
As for setting up Dirt Naps, X just calls Dante’s Jam Session assist to make someone block as they fall in, and she hits them with her unblockable level 3 super. She’s able to combo after it while X-Factored really easy, or even without X-Factor in the corner.
If you’re really stomping someone with the team, Trish can just Round Harvest and DHC into X-23’s unblockable at some point too,.
What do you guys think of Trish/Chun-Li/Viper for UMvC3? I know that Trish and Viper have really good setups and seem to work great with each other, but how do you guys feel about Chun-Li in the mix?
I’ve always really wanted to use Chun, and she got a lot of buffs in UMvC3, so I think she’ll be a lot stronger. One good thing about her in this team is that she builds a lot of meter, which helps Viper a ton.
I think they might work well, but it’s going to take a bit of testing. Legs assist is also good because it allows Trish to do easy IAD > j.2H cross-ups.
Yeah she looks much improved in Ultimate. Legs also set up an easy combo extension for Trish in Vanilla, if you didn’t need it to mix-up and start the combo.
It went something like:
:d::l: :h: :s: (pursuit) j. j.:d::h: j.:d::db::l: (air hop scotch) j. j.:h: (land) :h: :a1: (chun legs) :d::df::f::l: (Light Low Voltage, Chun starts hitting) :d::db::h: (Round Trip) :s: (pursuit) j.:s: (Round trip comes back) j.:s: (grounds them, hopefully into an RDK OTG extension or Round Harvest unblockable).
Good damage, good meter. Should be worth trying out in Ultimate. Viper had good extensions using legs assist, too.
Yeah, that sounds so godlike. My only problem at the moment is my Dante - it is still super basic (like, having-trouble-bold-canceling basic). That is why I’m considering running Trish/Viper/???
Viper might be execution heavy, but to me she feels a bit easier to learn than Dante. I am also looking for a third. I was thinking of putting back Taskmaster for his assist or Doom for melting faces with his beam assist. My team is up in the air at this point. All I know is I want Trish.
Haha, that’s where I started too. She was the only one I was any good with, so I just kept poking around other characters until I found some that worked really well with her. My first team was Trish/Wesker/Akuma. Wesker and Akuma are both really easy to play, so it made it easy to focus on Trish and work out her technical stuff. She’s pretty easy execution wise compared to someone like Viper, though.
Toughest parts about Trish play are converting air combos into relaunches and manipulating her air combos so you end up next to them for OTGs.
Yeah, don’t mind me. I am just a little salty after my failed session with Dante. Still, I found Smexy’s Bold Cancelling Plinking video just now. Hopefully I can get something going tomorrow. I am nothing if not stubborn.
And yeah, Trish is pretty easy on the execution, but she sure broke me into it. I remember how much trouble she used to give me back in the day. It is a shame I just finished learning all her tech just in time for Ultimate to come out. Oh well.
Right now I feel I have Trish down, the only things that I have problems with is hit confirming after Dante’s Jam Session. But hey, I should just focus on learning my other characters until you guys come up with that nice new technology.
can anybody help me decide which characters to play with trish? so far i got hawkeye and strider. i need something that can get me massive damage along with some good assists. new to marvel 3 series btw.
If damage is what you want, you might want to opt for an OTG (assist that pop an opponent off the ground). That allows you go extend a combo to add more damage. Also, Trish will need an assist to cover her approaches. You can read a nice post by JPem a few post up that gives you a good idea for assists to build a team around Trish.
So I lab Trish/Doom/Dr Strange for a while and I like what I’m seeing synergy wise. Gonna try this team out in some games and see where it goes, maybe I should start Doom first and TAC in Trish. I have Dr Strange at disc assist (I could find much use for the eye one)
People using Trish/Viper is pretty cool. Been using Trish/Viper/Doom after 1-3 weeks after MvC3 was released. Though I’m changing to pretty much 3 teams. Keeping Trish/Doom but using Strider/Iron Fist/Wright. Iron Fist and Wright are in the second slot and Strider is anchor on my other one. Iron Fist is more fun than I thought he’ll be and his flying kick assist is very good.
Awesome, then maybe I can ask you a question about Trish/Viper. May I assume that you use the Round Harvest into Focus Attack? I’ve been running the unblockable with X-23’s assist for a while now, but I am just not comfortable playing with ::s:: held down all throughout so I am thinking of picking up Viper. Is there any specifics about this set up compared to the low hit assist/ overhead set up? I was playing around with it for a bit and the Round Harvest stops locking them down by the time Viper finishes charging up the Focus Attack. Are you supposed to call out another assist to keep them locked down until Viper is done?
Thanks.
Off-topic: Two days of practice and I have gotten Dante’s bold canceling down, and now the possibilities are endless. Thank. God. I was freaking out there for a while.
It seems for now I am running Trish/???/Dante. I am just debating between X-23 and Viper
EDIT: Never mind. I found my answer in good ol’ Youtube. Posted below for those that were wondering about Trish/Viper like myself.

I love how one character changes the dynamic of the whole team. Putting X-23 puts the focus on Dante to make the kill, while the Viper set-up shifts the focus towards her. I love this game. It is so damn intricate.
Yeah, you need to call an assist to keep them lock down a little more. However, smart players will cross over counter at the last moment before the focus attack comes out. That’s what one of my friends do.
Also if they crossover counter right before the focus attack comes out, Viper can cancel it into a forward or backdash into a jump to block, or an EX Seismo for Invulnerability, or other craziness. Viper is retarded.
