Good Secondary Character For A Rog Player?

I am looking for a secondary character now that SSF4 is out, i have already tried sagat and rufus and disliked them both. Which character do you guys think closely resemble balrog?

Was thinking:
Guile
Dictator
Chun

I am personally going Dee Jay because I feel he has even or good match ups versus the characters I personally struggle with when playing Boxer! Plus he is black as well.

it depends on a lot of factors.

like say you want ot stay current with your circle execution. then i’d suggest rufus or something. say you’re bored and want to play a guy who’s a lot like balrog, then i’d say dictator. if you’re looking to fill matchup holes then probably something that beats rog/gief/chun easy so something like sagat is an option.

i play blanka as my second.

I did his trials and he seems like he will not be too hard to pick up, do you believe even though very similar , guiles flash kick is better then DJ’s Jackknife maxiumus?

My circle execution is not very good at all, I am way better playing charge, but that will not stop me from picking up a QCF character. The only characters i will not play are grapplers, because their play-styles do not match mines. I guess i am looking for a character that will fit balrogs style of play (no viper/gen), but also not to the point where i end up having the same bad match-ups with both character.

Ditto. Although DeeJay is alot more boring than rog I find

I’m using Deejay. It finally feels good to cross people up, throw projectiles and annoy the shit out of people like it’s been done to me so many times LOL. Deejays anti-air and wake up sucks bawls if you don’t have ex though.

I dig gen in vanilla, rog kinda boring execution wise and he’s not too flashy. Gen is a nice counter pick to balrog since he doesn’t have the same bad matchups, i.e. in vanilla i felt i had a easier time gen vs sagat than with balrog. I suggest going a different play-type i.e. non-charge, grappler, or low health/high damage to round out your rog.

They are both good for different reasons. flash kick armor breaks, hits low, can be fadc’d. jackknife auto corrects, ex version has super high priority, and combos off ex hands. Neither is perfect and I would not be able to tell you which is the best.

Dee Jay here.

  1. I like charge characters
  2. He has a fireball
  3. And a crossup
  4. Usable Focus Attack

So he plays pretty differently from Rog.

Getting hella afrolegends in here with the Balrog Deejay picks. Nice! I would want my secondary to be a character that stomps Zangiefs, Thawks, and Chuns in the nuts. I think Deejay would be good.

Rog has no bad match-ups imo… W/ that being said, I have no reason to play seriously with any other character.

When I’m screwing around I’ll play Bison, Blanka, Guile, Vega, and Deejay.
I’m also forcing myself to learn Dudley but I’m having little success.

Ah, Cody and Makoto are the two secondary characters I’m picking up. Cody because he was my boy back in A3, because he’s got a godlike set of normals, insane poke strings, and a wide variety of combo finishers for different scenarios. I’ve picked up Makoto because she was my main in 3S, and I have no problem with the kara-karakusa (but i can’t for the LIFE of me get the s.hpxxhayate cancel, s.mpxxmp hayate). I don’t think Balrog’s going to have any really punishing matchups in this game, save Chun-Li. 'Gief is still tough, but like… he does less damage now, so it’s not as scary.

I’ve been really loving Guy. I think I’ll be maining both because Rog is simply too beastly to drop.

Balrog is a great character to learn for basics such as footsies, zoning and basic timing for combos.

However Guy has so many mixups! Arghhhhh I’m not used to so much choice on knockdown… a bit more execution intensive too. Plus he wears Nike Dunks

I would like to learn a shoto character in super. Vanilla sf4 was the first time I sat down with sf game and properly tried to be decent at it. Boxer felt right once I started playing him. I thought about playing dudley but 2 boxing character in my roster come on :stuck_out_tongue: I did pick up ryu before super but almost everyone plays ryu :stuck_out_tongue: I’ll give cody a good go.

Jack-knife actually does its job as an AA (At least, LK and EX do) whereas FK still gets stuffed by all sorts of shit. FK has a much lower hibox though, and Jack-knife tends to fly over people’s heads. On the other hand, Guile’s fireball is much, much better than DJ’s. I can’t tell for sure which character has better normals (Both are excellent in that department though), but imho if you’re leaning towards defense go with Guile, if offense (Or you like lots of combos) go with DJ for crossup shenanigans and combos into knockdown (With LK Sobat or c.MK).

my secondary for rog is deejay, if u can pull off bnbs with rog u can pull of a bnbs with deejay plus his vortex. balrog is my character if i want to rush down, but some players out there are really good at taming balrog, so i pick deejay as a alternate so i can play it more safe. thats the thing with me, when i play balrog all thats running in my head is “attack, attack, attack,” sometimes i get a landslide victory, and sometimes i just get outclassed. but when i play deejay i start being more well rounded.

WHAT! gen is the shit :wtf: If ur looking for a rushdown character i wouldnt recommend guile. If you rushdown with guile your most likely gonna get trashed. Guile is much better at zoning and keeping his opponent at bay. Rufus is a great rushdown character. Same with Akuma, but with akuma you have to play smart because of his low hp. Bison is a pretty good choice, but when you find someone that stuffs his rushdowns your gonna have a big problem. Blanka/ Fuerte might be a good choice too because of their mixup game. You can really mindfuck someone with them when you play them right. Also take into consideration the new and improved Chun li. I used to main boxer a while back until i found my love for Gen and Sim. No matter how bad they are im still gonna play those two characters. Just pick a character you like and kick ass with em. Gl in finding a secondary =d

The characters that Rog have trouble with either zone him out with fireballs and force them to play their game or lock out to many of his options for him to be completely effective (grapplers).

So a character that can counteract those advantages would be best. I think they pretty much have to have a fireball to be a dependable counter pick. I think DeeJay is an easy transition from Rog and pretty effective too, but I would say ideally Sagat or Ryu would be the best choices, but then you’d be joining that never ending list…

Im playing Cody as secondary, played rufus in vanilla along with rog, but rufus is boringg in the long run, i like cody because i can play rushdown or footsies like rog, i play the offensive with rog, pressure, blockstrings, mix ups, etc. and cody feels right the same, pressure, blockstrings, frametraps, pressure pressure pressure, i think Guy can be a nice secondary too but with too many options i mindgame my self lol

I will probably give Dee Jay, Chun Li and Cody a try and see which one feels the best on my hands. Thank everyone for the helpful tips.
