I’ve never used anyone else ‘seriously’ other than the Rogster - Back in my SF2+ (All the way to XMen v SF where I eventually stopped playing fighting games) I was always using Guile / Charlie as my favourite characters both playstyle and storywise.
I had all intentions of maining Guile in Vanilla SF4 but here’s the stinker - Even though he is also a charge character (I’m limited to charge characters only due to Keyboard) his moves where a lot more awkward to execute with it, so I started experimenting with others, picked up Rog, fell in love and never looked back.
When I’m messing around I tend to go for Honda with Guile on the side - If I’m really having fun I’d even crack out Bison, though admittedly I can’t play ANYONE other than Rog - I end up just resorting to headbutt/scissor kick// ‘Insert name of charge move here’ spam in the end.
If I absolutely HAD to choose then I’d go with Guile, especially with his apparant newfound strength in Super - At least then I’d have a very solid Passive/Aggressive character (Rog, Aggressive or Defensive) and one Passive/Defensive character (Guile, likely a turtle style) under my wing for certain situations.
Bare in mind, I say all of the above on a personal preference level, NOT on a level of “What is a good secondary for Rog” overall.
In my opinion, a good secondary for Balrog is… Balrog. I think having the mentality that you need a secondary character to cover your bad matchups is a bad mentality. Learning how to play your bad matchups makes you a better Balrog player because you learn how to master the character even with his limitations. I honestly feel Balrog doesn’t have any truly bad matchups in this game anyway. Some matchups are harder for Balrog to win like a good Dee Jay, Chun-Li, Guile, Dhalsim, or Rose but Balrog certainly can win. It just takes patience.
How exactly is Dee Jay or Rose remotely bad? Balrog had an advantage against Guile and Dhalsim in vanilla although I do see both matches being even in super. As for Chun Li… well you got me there, she still seems to have a slight advantage on Balrog.
I didn’t think this was a thread for finding a character to cover bad match ups… I thought he was asking what some other characters he might like to play based on what characters we like to use on the side. I main Balrog and if I’m playing to win that is who I would use. If I’m playing for fun and don’t want to beat the dog crap out of my friends over and over again with Balrog, I use my secondaries. I don’t use my secondaries to try and win if I lose with Balrog and I didn’t think that was where this thread was going.
But yes I agree with you, counter picking just because the match up isn’t in Balrog’s favor is lame and prevents you from becoming a better player overall.
Not really, once your timing is perfect then its all mix ups, how is it lame to use a character with better mix ups to cover a bad match?
If my mains Rog and my opponents main is Chun, and we are about even skill level he’s gonna win. nothing wrong with having a backup incase of situaions like that
if anyone wants to agree with me that the only remotely bad match-ups are zangief and sagat… then i think the only good secondary, IF YOU ARE TRYING TO BE A COUNTERPICKING ***, would be sagat. personally i like guile since hes charge. Ive got ryu, bison, guile, cammy, thawk as secondary’s right now. they are all pretty fun
I enjoy fighting against Chun with Balrog. Occasionally it can feel like an uphill battle the entire time. (Even against Chuns at a lower skill level, since I can be overly aggressive at times.) Patience is a virtue vs. Balrog’s tougher match ups, and no two people are on the same skill level. Someone is always better and you should be working to make sure that somebody is you.
I agree with what Jav1ts. You can overcome any other character if you work at it hard enough. So it’s a lot more rewarding sticking to one character. Though, I get bored playing the same character over and over again. I feel that Bison is a good secondary character to Balrog if you want someone similar. I personally enjoy playing someone completely different, so I use Viper from time to time. I’m also trying to pick up Deejay. But even having those secondary characters… I find that I’m using Balrog for all my ranked matches. It’s extremely overwhelming learning a new character and all their tricks… especially since everyone’s discovering new stuff. So I would suggest sticking to Rog and once you think you’ve mastered him, read around and you’ll find something new because you’ll never master a character. But if you’re set on using a secondary character, play around with a few characters… see who you like. It’s really all personal preference.
I secondary Dudley, to keep showing all these chumps that you don’t need to kick to kick ass. And they play really differently, so it’s good mixing things up.
"course I play a lot of other characters too, and not very well >.>
mained balrog in vanilla (never was too serious) picked up guile as a possible primary when SSF4 came out since i like charge chars, but came back to balrog because its funner trying to rush down against fireball chars than shoot sonic booms at maximum speed for 30 seconds til someone does something. i still use guile as a secondary now though, but i find him alot less fun when fighting rogs “bad” matchups anyways like guile (mirror) and sagat, since they end up being fireball spam so i mostly use him as a fun change of pace from rog
tried chun-li a little bit, but never got too into her, might try to pick her up later. didn’t care for deejay too much due to his anti-air kick being really weird and whiffing/getting stuffed alot. bison is cool but didnt seem to fit my style, i like the option of turtling or rushing and bison seems to be best rushing 24/7
