Its a Godzilla movie. If there’s a plot is kinda there so the movie doesn’t devolve into one giant monster fight. All of the Godzilla movies boil down to you waiting for Japanese people to STFU so you can get to the good part. Guess what? This is the same. If you don’t understand the basic structure of a Godzilla movie then I’d understand why you’d be disappointed. If you were already a Godzilla fan then you should appreciate that they brought over the Japanese sensibility mostly intact while using modern computer graphics do deliver some really cool stuff.
I mean, we saw Godzilla melt a monster from the inside with his breath. What the fuck?
But I guess that’s maybe the problem with Godzilla. Some people hated The Avengers because it was The Avengers avenging. This is dumb. More movies should be fucking praised for delivering on expectations otherwise we get the shittiness of Dark Knight Rises. So good job The Avengers, good job Dredd, good job Godzilla, you fucking get it.
That’s not to say that the movie doesn’t have an issue here or there. Would Brian Cranston have made a great lead for a trilogy? Fuck yeah he would’ve. Oh well we ain’t getting it. The emo eye shit? Seriously, a building fell on Godzilla. You should be glad that they can give him proper pain expressions now.
I think people should just type out what they were expecting. I think they had really unrealistic expectations for the first film of a franchise reboot. Remember that the previous American made Godzilla was a colossal flop. For most of America, Godzilla might as well be Anime Nerd Shit.
Its kind of like hate on Predators. Was the best movie? Not really. Did it fucking deliver with the Predators Predatoring? Fuck yeah it did. Could it have used 100% less samurai bullshit? Yep. Still doesn’t mean it was a bad movie.
Dudes are walking into modern b tier movies expecting Avatar. Go in with proper expectations.
I agree with you on this. We’re all just discussing the film and I’ll admit I can get really heated, but I’m not trying to force anything though. I’m not trying to make people hate the movie. I’m just bringing up what I think are good points and I get called salty for it. It’s whatever now honestly. I’m excited for the sequel because I’m sure it’ll be better.
I do agree that people just have a fucked up plethora of expectations. They expect Oscar-worthy performances combined with fucked up mindless shit. Let’s take the Batman Nolan trilogy, for example. Sure, it took itself seriously and attempted to give us a deep, realistic portrayal of the Batman, but in the end of the day (and putting it very VERY bluntly) it’s still a troubled millionaire who dresses up like a bat to fight gimmicky criminals.
Same goes for Godzilla. People don’t like the human parts, but they’re in there to give us something to relate to. Take Pacific Rim, for example. A visual and otaku orgasm, sure, but not too many people related to that shit. For all of us who grew up and breathe that shit, sure, it was fantastic, but if you bring in the casual moviegoer they be like “Huh, this is some straight up videogame crap right here”. Hence, why the movie bombed pretty bad. A niche fanbase is NOT enough to get a movie over.
And hence where a movie like this hits or misses. Do you please the selected amount of fanboys and alienate everybody else, or do you create your own spin and risk the wrath of the fanboys in search for more revenue? A question that can never be answered 100% right…
To be honest, I’m hoping that Edwards’s team does what they did with this movie: create new/unique monster(s) that haven’t appeared in the franchise. I thought the MUTOs were relatively cool, despite being fairly generic (probably helped that I didn’t watch Cloverfield or Super 8 or whatever it was called), but my main concern is that the expectations to execute fan favorites like Mothra or King Ghidorah correctly might be too high and cause the movie to be inferior to this one. As a Godzilla fan, my heart would love to see some fan favorites (Biollante is fucking awesome too), but my brain tells me it’d be pretty hard to pull off. What do you guys think? If they were to make a new monster for the next movie, would you be satisfied with that so long as the movie delivers? Or how about if Toho helps them design a new monster?
I’ll be perfectly ok with Legendary wanting to create new monsters for their film series. It could keep plots fresh and be easier to maintain the “force of nature” angle with the monsters
Considering it had a $196M budget and barely engrossed $102M in North America…yeah, I wouldn’t say it did too hot.
Granted, it ended with a worldwide revenue of $411M (mostly from Asia…which would be obvious considering the movie’s theme), but yeah, those kind of local numbers would scare anyone (although not as horrible as, say, Speed Racer).
Also, Darkseid HAS to be either Robert Maillet or Kevin Grevioux.
I hope it’s Mr. Grevioux, he basically just has to get made too like Darkseid, then act like an unemotional overlord and that’s that.
Would be glorious.
Do a Final Wars kind of battle for the 3rd film in which you put numerous Monsters on the table & Godzilla being the Central to it all. Just because King Ghidorah shows up in the 2nd movie doesn’t mean you can’t put a spectacular showcasing in the 3rd film even “if” he’s not included, however what’s to say that he can’t show up for the 3rd film anyways, unless they kill him off. We had The Joker in The Dark Knight & the finale movie of the trilogy did fine without the most central Antagonist to Batman. I’m sure they can pull that off with the Godzilla franchise if it decides to go into a trilogy as well.
I thought the movie was ok. You geeks like to run through everything with a fine tooth comb because you read the original source material, that shits getting mad old. You cant speak for every fucking person, a lot of us have seen the original Godzillas and those werent movie masterpieces either FYI.
ANYWAYS
My gripe is the imax theatre I was in had the shit so fucking loud that I left with a headache. I had to plug my ears everytime Godzilla screamed.
Shit, I completely forgot to post here. I enjoyed the movie, had feels throughout my entire sitting. Really, really love the sound work, and full model of Godzilla wasn’t bad at all.
My hype moment:
[details=Spoiler]The entire movie I was like, “son, where’s the beam attack?”, then when I saw that nigga tail and back charging up my dick got harder than diamond.
[/details]
My only complaints:
[details=Spoiler] There were multiple times the mutos were causing havoc in the city we had to listen to the military discuss there next plan of attack or watch that live action news from a TV monitor. There was also a scene with firefighters that felt random, and the ending after the big fight. Yo, you couldn’t show exhausted Godzilla’s POV after he just had a real match? That shit pissed me off when they switch to the field monitor. Shit would have been epic.
Not a complaint: It was nice seeing that nigga Richard T Jones again. I haven’t seen his balled head ass in years  [/details]
also, when asked about why Godzilla doesn’t show up until late in the movie:
I have to give him props for trying. People seem divided about them doing this. I think it was worth it, as when Godzilla did show up, you could hear people cheering or shouting “it’s on” or just plain fucking excited.
Either way, seems like next movie could do the same thing, but would balance it out with the other famous Toho monsters. Why bitch about Godzilla vs Mothra, when you’ll probably also be getting Anguirus vs Rodan, Godzilla vs both those two fucknuts, and more?
They still need to establish that there are other monsters on Earth before dealing with space. I’m not arguing that I wouldn’t love Ghidorah in the sequel, I just realize it’s too early to fight him. Although you just know the sequel will tease the shit out of him.
edit: although some sources have pointed out that Legendary and WB only got the rights to Godzilla, hence why they had to create MUTO in the first place, so there is a VERY good chance we’ll just get more new monsters, in order to avoid shelling out more money to Toho. However, I also see Toho as being smart enough to get their IP’s out there, especially after the latest Godzilla movie destroys the box office.
