Toho has gone on the record to deny that the 1998 Godzilla is NOT affiliated with the main one. That was just a giant mutated iguana, that some idiot New Yorkers called Godzilla.
In fact, they renamed that creature Zilla, so as to differentiate from the true Godzilla.
