Yeah, whether he’s getting parried by Daigo, losing to Yipes, OCV’ed by SooMighty, losing to Daigo at the Gamestop Invitational, losing to Sanford, losing to Daigo at Evo2k9, not making top 8 in Evo2k10, people are always celebrating his failures and then making a random comment about how fat he is. Usually, it’s from a whole bunch of nobodies, but Daigo, Choi, Alex Valle never got the same treatment.
I’m Japanese and I’d like to try to correct some mistakes of the above transation.
-The person who are referred to as KSK in the whole of the translation is Kokujin, a player of sf3 3rd strike. KSK was in the flight to Japan.
-They didn’t said such a thing.
-It didn’t seem that Mago said such a strong opinion. He just said if he attended EVO 2010 he could have reached the final with his Fei Long and Sagat.
-Actually, they really didn’t know any details of EVOxGods. The details will be talked at the next week’s streaming by KSK.
In the streaming, I impressed when they were talking about EVO. They really respect it including the past EVOs. In general, skilled players and other amateur players are separated in Japan; the latter people are not serious to develop the comunity by themself. For example, the latter people don’t attend to game tornaments such as SBO but just see its movies in their home. But EVO is different, Mago and Kokujin said.
My bad. Thanks for the corrections. Everything I’m posting is third hand. My friend could have misunderstood and/or I could have misinterpreted it from my friend. Maybe he said Daigo should upload to niconico and I thought he meant one of the Japanese said it.
Daigo said something similar about Evo in an interview. He mentioned that Evo is something that the players own. Not something that sponsors own and the players show up to. Which is very interesting to them.
Ok so i didnt quite understand why exactly is Justin hated by so many people. From what i gather he talks trash a lot, but not so much as this guy Marn correct? Also i am curious is there something like official statements from the top US players about how things turned out at EVO? I think this would clear out a lot of the speculations and stuff. Also i would have love to see Sako and Makoto out there at EVO rather than Mago.
Maybe its true that the level of SSFIV in Taiwan isnt high, but it only proves that online can be the way to go for a players from such a countries. Seems like not a hole lot of people knew GamerBee before EVO. The true is he was the top Adon player that you can see on replays, utube or whatever before he attended in the US tournament. My guess is that he can play with JP from Taiwan or 4 bars or something.
I just can’t bring myself to root for a Rufus.
I’m sorry I just can’t.
If he had gone for anybody else I would been all with it, but I’m just so fucking tired of seeing Rufus win everything with bullshit.
lets get real if Justin had go to the finals against Daigo the whole room would have been behind Justin. the cheers were more about having someone not named Wong or Daigo win the finals simple as that. Its like the Yankees winning every year you get tired of it and want to see someone else win
Huh?
I don’t think people hate Justin. They hate Marn for various reasons, not Justin. Wanting to see Justin lose is not the same as hating him.
Most of the time people just want to see fresh players come through and win. It’s not a Rufus thing (People hated on him using Balrog too). Its not a trash talking thing, cos most of the time he is very very respectful. They just want to see new people coming through. It gets boring when Justin wins absolutely everything in sight. But like you said, last year they were cheering him on vs Daigo.
And everyone thinks their region is better than another, but ESWC showed Europe where they were in terms of levels.
Maybe it has something to do with his looks. Isn’t there some psychological theory that says people tend to dislike things that they don’t find attractive? And if they’re repulsed by the person/thing its more intense? Isn’t there something like that? Only Justin and Marn get hate from what I’ve seen
Ok what are these reasons? I am not asking for deep specifics, just in general.
They dislike Marn because he is loud, a braggard, salty as hell when he loses and taunts whenever possible. I appreciate his skills and find him to be funny. And personally, I don’t think I can have a strong enough reaction to someone who plays video games to actually develop hate for them. But others do. They REALLY like to see Marn lose/get humiliated.
Justin has said himself that he tries to be a “personality” for the scene. In a sense, if there are a lot of people booing him, it’s more entertaining than if he was simply polite and passive. He’s not afraid to play the “heel”… actually, Ricky Ortiz is sort of the same way. Both are rather ruthless as competitive players and are there first and foremost to win.
Despite the hate that was present against him during play, Justin was still called upon almost constantly to sign sticks, sign Evo badges, take pictures with players, etc. And he periodically does podcasts with Gootecks to answer questions from players, giving advice and such. But it’s often perceived that Justin has all of the advantages (better skill, yomi, sponsorship, equipment, reputation, etc) that virtually every other player does not have, and perhaps most significantly, that Justin manages to win despite playing very little at all in casual community scenes. You will almost never see him play against other players in a casual setting such as Dreamlab or even Family Fun Arcade… only for scheduled events or exhibitions. This creates something of an elitist perception removed from any sort of community and thus leaving fewer people in the competitive scene to root for him. Does this make sense?
This is why people like to see Marn lose: >_<

Possibly because some of the stuff mentioned in this thread:

Watch the vid then read the posts that follow
yea. for me it was just fun to see rufus backed into a corner by gief, and having to down-back the whole fight against adon pressure. couldn’t cheer for ricky either. if you want fan support, don’t play rufus.
Marn deserves the hate he gets.
i’m not sure about the newcomers, but the justin-hate from the old days was 1. he turtles and nobody likes turtles, and 2. he’s ec and nobody likes ec. especially when they win.
a lot of that’s changed now and i for one love watching him play, but i’m sure a lot of the old hate just stuck for a lot of people
Yeah LB hit it right on the nose. Back in the day, he was notorious for his defensive style and there was the EC bs WC rivalry.
Justin turtles in CvS2 because it is a very turtley game. That is simply the nature of the game, especially in C and A grooves, which are the most dominant grooves in the game, and Justins preference.
Same as above in 3s. He mains Chun Li, and she is a very defensive, turtley character. Just the nature of the game.
In MvC2, he is the polar opposite of turtle. His Storm is more aggressive than most as is his Sentinel. MSP is also very offensive by nature.
In SF4, he plays Rufus. There are a variety of characters to choose from that range from turtles to offense-heavy. Rufus is on the latter end of the spectrum, and Justin is pretty aggressive with his dive kick rushdown.
If anyone still hates Justin because of his turtley playstyle, they are just ignorant to the mechanics of each specific game. He plays a variety of styles, depending on what he feels is most effective in that game.
Since you’re Japanese I also wanted to ask you something in regards to that stream. There is this guy from Gamefaqs who claims Mago was being racist and prejudice on that stream. Saying he made racial slurs towards blacks, Koreans and Tawainese(Gamerbee and Infiltration) and he mocked Ricky in some way rhetorically asking if he was going to get up for another hug if he beat Daigo. Is there any truth to this? The topic on Gamefaqs is here by the way…
You’re talking about Justin Wong and Marn.I don’t think they represent the average skill level of the USA.He got eliminated fast but i still think he’s way above most other good player in the USA.
Kinda like Daigo … He crushed Ricky Ortiz
We see Daigo lose more often in Japan. When was the last time he won SBO?
