Do you think iron man or thor would be a better anchor for a team? I’m currently using thor as the anchor for my secondary team (avengers, yo) and I was wondering what your thoughts were on the Thor forums about this.
If you have a good Iron Man, he’s better on anchor. If it needs work, put Thor there
Well, don’t Thor and Dorm use up a lot of meter? The synergy doesn’t seem to be there.
I was thinking of this team up: Thor, Dormammu (That DHC into Floating bomb is too good), and Doom (Missiles).
Thor isn’t a meter whore. He usually builds as much meter as he burns. Dorm and Phoenix though…no…just no. Dorm is pretty meh, if not nigh useless without meter. Phoenix is self explanatory.
This post is more along the lines of combo discussion, but since it uses a particular assist I thought it might be more appropriate for the Team thread. At some point I realized that Thor’s slow, drawn out air series allows Shuma Gorath’s Mystic Ray assist to OTG, even from the other side of the screen. I played around with it, and I thought I’d share a few of the things I found.
A fairly basic midscreen Thor BnB is something as simple as:
c.LH S sj.MMH XX M Mighty Strike (2hits) XX Air Thornado (648.7k damage)
However, thanks to Thor’s ability to do his air chain really slowly, he can do something more like this:
c.LH S sj.MMHS, land and immediate Shuma call + dash twice (or wavedash) then H Mighty Spark, slight delay then XX into Ground Thornado (692.8k damage)
Note: You need to get fairly close to the enemy, because you need the electric bubble that forms during the Mighty Spark startup to hit the enemy, not just the beam projectile.
This combo not only provides a 44k increase in damage, but also allows you to combo into Ground Thornado, which is far more useful when it comes to DHCs than Air Thornado (which allows the opponent to flip out in midair shortly afterward) thanks to its untechable falling state. For instance, that combo DHCed into Hail Storm (do the DHC real late so that none of the initial hits whiff) does a nice 860k-ish damage for two bars.
The same combo gets easier and more damaging if you catch them in (or at least close to) the corner. Depending on your timing, how much of Shuma’s beam hits, and how many hits of the H Mighty Spark connect, the combo can do 717k damage reliably and even up to 722k damage (the cancel timing into super is strict for the max damage, though). And again, since this combo ends in Ground Thornado, it makes DHCs to many other supers fairly easy. In this case, DHCing to Hail Storm (again, DHC real late to ensure every hit connects) gets about 888k damage.
Note that these combos don’t have to start specifically with c.LH. Other openings include (Tri-Jump j.L into) c.LM(3hits) S; c.LM(3hits) XX M Mighty Smash into S; Mighty Hurricane then land and immediate M Mighty Smash into S; whatever other BnB starter he may have. Shuma assist will still connect, even from across the screen, with all of these openers, provided you do your air combo slowly enough and hit the Air S as late as possible.
If you’re more interested in setting up potential resets as opposed to straight damage, you can instead land and call Shuma, dash once and do M Mighty Smash (provided you didn’t already use your ground bounce, of course). You can opt to relaunch with another S, but the opponent will immediately tech after sj.MM. Instead go straight into sj.HS or do sj.H XX L Mighty Spark. sj.H XX any Mighty Strike will not combo. However, the potential for forced techs into air throw resets is pretty high here, so I thought I’d mention it.
Going back to the team formation part of this, it is probably obvious from that writeup that I’ve been toying around with Thor/Storm/Shuma, but honestly there are most likely tons of decent options for that second character. For instance, anyone who has a beam assist to help Thor’s approach plus a high-damaging super would most likely work well, so Iron Man might be worth a look in this team.
Spent the whole day going Thor (b) Iron Man (a) Capt America (a), it was pretty good combination along with a good amount of flavor (AVENGER ASSEMBLE). Some thoughts on the team after around 60 matches with it.
-Captain should probably be on point, (I used this order mainly so I get the most time playing as Thor) since he can set the game pace pretty well with shield slash and charging star, not to mention using Hyper Stars and Stripes to DHC into tornado/thunder for switching…which can then be DHC into Proton Cannon if really necessary. Not sure if you can DHC trick after HSS though, it’s certainly hard/impossible to do it after proton cannon (both versions).
-Thor (b - smash) is a pretty good cross-over counter if you need to swap out.
-Both shield slash and uni beam are excellent to cover your tri-jump.
-Thor is probably the worst anchor of the three, since he really needs assists to get in, especially if the other guy is in running mode to lame out the clock, while IM has better mix ups on his own.
-Another extremely powerful tool for IM (especially as anchor) is his Iron Avenger, it counters pretty much all hypers (maybe not hyper counters, and I’ve seen a morrigan lvl3 on reaction stuff the IA). He also has one of the highest damage boost during xfactor (230%, probably the highest in the game, on a side note Thor is 220%), so IA is extremely powerful if you either xfc it after a bnb otg smartbomb (kills anyone ala wesker otg xfc lvl3 style) or just xfc then IA a beam hyper while you’re blocking. Yet ANOTHER use (and my primary method of using it) is to counter dark phoenix with it, such as when you’re blocking c.L spam, you just xfc IA. It’s like a poor man’s version of XFC Doom’s Time but whatever.
-Iron Man is actually pretty anti-rushdown if you can get a little space at first and stuff every approach with j.H. Aim it right and it can stuff things like wolverine dive kicks and ammy air dash, as a bonus, if close enough you’ll also hit, say, the sentinel assists and make all the drones go away. For this reason, I usually swap IM and Capt when I see a rush down heavy team (wolve or ammy start for example).
-The key with IM is to just achieve dominance in the middle of the screen and STAY there, then take it slow and use a mix of j.M/H, uni beam, repulsor (make sure to spread) and smart bombs to keep people from getting in, AND to keep people from zoning (when you’re in the middle of the screen, high-altitude H smart bombs have really high durability to stuff most anti-air options). From midscreen, box jump MM or tri-jump LM are also at optimal distance if you want that sudden burst of agression, or you can also feign it with a j.dH to stuff any attempts to counter you.
-A good trick that was inspired by SSF4 Claw is to jump in with a d.H to poke, then jump back out (with a backward airdash if needed) with another d.H to stuff the chasing, at some right distance, you can combo the dH hit into other stuff.
-Use Thor’s air dash or air light mighty strike to cross up as you call IM or Capt to assist.
-Cap’s cartwheel, though extremely unsafe, is an interesting tool to cross up as you call Thor or IM to assist, it’s pretty good considering cap has bad corner combos (just air chain) in this set up, and cartwheel allows you to use your bnb.
Well that’s all I can think of for this team so far. I guess it looks kinda like a post on how to use IM, but hey, he requires more execution than cap and I’m sure you can find Thor resource elsewhere in the Thor section lol.
Oh one last thing, considering most people think all three chars are not top tier material, it kinda gives you a ‘got nothing to lose’ attitude and it feels good beating a team of wesker ammy and wolverine
ive also been rocking the avengers and have come to pretty much teh same conclusions. cap on point, same assists, same general strats in a basic manner at least. iron man to anchor over thor for sure IMO - if only my iron man didn’t suck so much ATM LOL
While Iron Man may be hard to use to his full potential (I’m no where near that level as well), he’s easy enough to pick up if you just reduce the tools you have to say, unibeam spam from farther away, then shift to L repulsor (H version is better, but the start up is slow so you should use it when more comfortable with the map control)…repulsor plus spread! Or, if you really need to, as long as you have the life lead and not against someone like Doom or Mag, you can just stay full screen and spam unibeam, it’s fast and beats out most fireballs. Another thing I’m mindful of when I zone like that is to bait out hypers, and once, say, ryu has no meter, you can safely just spam M or H unibeam and repulsor him down if he tries to super jump or air M/H tatsu (extremely unsafe when he lands).
Another thing most might not know is that even though IM has superior air mobility, his ground dash is horrible, you can’t do anything for the first few frames (other than jump), so do NOT dash in and poke (ala wolverine) because it won’t work. Though max range c.M is pretty good but you dont have too many follow up options afterward. Approach from the air with either the 4-frame L or the long range M or H.
Oh yeah, c.H is a piece of trash that will definitely get you killed if you use it.
I’ve been listening to God’s Beard over on Neogaf ( a really skilled Thor player ) and only recently have I taken the plunge after figuring out that Thor’s “randy savage” jumping high priority elbow drop when used at the same time as She-Hulk’s Torpedo assist= unblockable.
It’s a gimmick, but a really good one. So after talking it over with Beard he suggested I try using for my utility (2nd) character someone with beams to handle what comes after they figure out I’m using an unblockable. That thing I speak of is them switching to keepaway and trying to roll projectiles.
I use either Magneto or Deadpool’s beam/gun to keep them pinned for a second until I can fly over there with Thor or use his nice ranged Mighty Smash to get back in there. I may try out Captain America’s Shield throw for this, but it’ll likely get jumped over after the first try. Ironman is good on this team too as well as any good battery like Haggar. Haggar doesn’t really get me in too easily with Thor, but he does keep me pretty safe. I just use Mag and Deadpool for their options if Thor goes out.
Try out the Thor/She-Hulk unblockable. It’s pretty sweet and you’d be surprised how often it works. I’d say it hits about as often as any Tron assist setup I’ve ever tried.
until they predict/see it and hyper dhc xfc hyper to kill both characters =(
Thor on point can be really fun with the right assists. I’ve been messing with various teams today and while I haven’t settled on one for sure there are two that have stood out
Thor, dorm, sent. Thor on mighty smash, dorm on purification and sent drones. Tis team has food dhc synergy fonm Thor and dorm benefits from his assist plus was my first time messing with sent. Drones and Thor is godlike. Makes zoning much easier. Mighty strike + drones cross ups are good as is tick throw off drones. I should test the damage but think I got a three light mighty spark combo from fullscreen. Only problem is Thor has weaker corner combo off purification, plus two zoners is less fun for me.
The variation is c.viper instead of dorm. C.viper otg assist allows Thor to do corner
super loop and she benefits from drones plus is super fun rush down!
Also was thinking of what in my opinion strongest Thor team is. Without playing it I think overall Tron, Thor, Sent.with all the good assists is the best. Tron on point with Thor + drones means if you land a hit that character is dead. Plush both drones and gustaf fire are perfect Thor assists. So yeah in myopinioj that would be the best overall Thor team.
Moral of the story is though like most characters Thor with drones is really strong.
I personally find Sentinel’s drones immensely overrated. I refuse to ever use sentinel on my team, and when I’m up against sentinel, both Thor’s L Spark and Modok’s psionic blaster take them all out. Only when you’ve already created an opening would the drones seem more useful. Cuz when I have Thor on point, it’s just, L Spark/projectile assist, flight and L air Strikes all day.
Don’t forget the long start up on the drones. If I’m not already being pressured, then there’s no sense in me blocking something as slow and fragile as the drones.
couldnt you just go for a superjump + MH reset after purification? atleast thats what i usually go for when i get someone in the corner
Yes of course you could do that. In general thats the same reset as just going for the post mighty smash H reset in the corner. What I was saying though is you lose out on guaranteed higher damage through a combo that you get with some otg assists. So with purrification the combo you do is.
blahblahblah J.s knocks them down in the corner. Call dormmamu Immediate jump into charge mighty strike+L then mighty spark+mm xx mighty hurricane.
But if you have a better otg assist you can do blahblahblah, call (viper for instance) charge mighty strike + h xx mighty hurricane, they get stuck in weird fall state, then either mighty strike + h again (can get full charge here but its pretty difficult unless you have an assist that works) or just mighty spark + m xx mighty hurricane. Two supers about 800k with the possibility to dhc if you have a decent dhc, they are generally lower at that point making more follow up dhcs possible. Its not like the most terrible thing in the world to not have this option but If you do have it, its sooo much better!
Also to metrox - Sure drones can be dealt with like that, but of course thor actually has good rush down if he has an assist covering him. And trust me one block iad L call drones into more iading’ or whatever you want is really pretty buff. Also full screen, yes there are plenty of beams that would be out random drones. But with thor you have one of the most durable + on block projectiles in the game, with drones coming behind. If they try and dash in and block even one spark, they have to start blocking the drones for the most part. None of this is guaranteed but drones is really good with thor.
using purification for a reset is much better than mighty smash and a lot more likely to land imo, but ya its not exactly the best OTG assist to extend combos. Then again with thor you cant rly do much after an OTG assist because of hitstun decay, its usually just mighty strike/spark xx mighty tornado which you can still do after purification. I never rly go for the H Mighty strike xx Mighty tornado x2 thing because im pretty sure that you can do more/same damage with a DHC without going through all that trouble.
Its not really that hard with the right assist. Also the good thing about it, is you can do more damage afterwards by still being able to dhc. I mean its fine if you dont’ go for it but it still nice to have.
Whelp I did it! After messing with it for a few hours I finally figured out how to break 1million with tron + thor for two meters or get almost to 1.2 for three, the combo builds two meters so if you start from 1 meter you make up all the meter you use yourself, or you can add on a super at the end to kill any pesky high health characters. The combo that uses the third meter could do more damage, because you can actually setup the untech super and possibly get like a mighty smash M to mighty Smash + H for a bit more damage but it wont add on all that much probably get to 1.2 though.
Anyway yeah Thor, Tron sent is a boss team, Thor actually can help tron out with getting beacon bomb setups off command grab and Tron can actually self setup a beacon bomb to get the glitch for about 900k. I need to make a video about this team.
Perfect Thor team? I’m partial to Thor (Mighty Smash) / IM (Repulsor Blast) / Taskmaster (Aim Master L). Thor on point eats pretty much everyone for breakfast when properly assisted. Repulsor Blast provides a way to stop characters like Wesker from teleporting behind you, extends Thor’s juggles, and is even a good anti-air. Aim Master L is just a great multi-hit projectile which enables you to lockdown the opponent.
Yeah but like the team I said does that too. And can do over 1mil for two meters… and has two of the arguably best assists in the game that both help thor.
My combo is better. But yeah its basically that! I found the optimal tron starter combo. Works from almost everywhere except like the very far corner. Also found out thor could start super loop from the dhc lolz.
