"Give me a Sit-rep!" - Chris Redfield UMvC3 Thread

Chip and resets are already going to be a pretty big part of it, naturally (and I agree with you about finding different ways to reset with him). Mentioning the idiosyncrasies of the OTG after a throw is good, I’ll hit the lab with that later. And it’s not so much a combo video as much as it’s a section on how to combo with Chris from a bunch of different weird situations, because, as we know, Chris combos never actually seem to start with a crouching M.

Finally, thanks for the feedback. It’s always encouraging.

edit:
Two questions: I’m looking for match footage for real-world examples of good Chris use and also for tech/combo videos for techniques to share. I’m not trying to show off anything new, necessarily, but rather to give a comprehensive overview of the character. First question: Anybody got something that isn’t already posted in the video thread? Second: What’s the etiquette? I plan on giving everyone I use a bit of credit at the end (a special thanks credit, probably) but should I ask people? Is someone going to get upset because I’m stealing their tech?

What does chris do against wolvie? Pray?

There are quite a few match-ups where it feels like praying is all you can do using Chris heh, but to answer your question…An aggressive Wolverine that has solid mix-ups with Berserker slash is hard to defend against regardless of which character you may be using, but fortunately for Chris, if you have enough time to set-up a proximity, that, in my opinion is your best friend against him. Proximity mines will almost always stop a Berserker slash now, and since most Wolverine players know that if a Proximity mine is in place they can’t be as aggressive (dive kicks etc) it will give you some time to keep him at bay and chip him away. Once he is in however, there is very little you can do offensively except master your neck breaking skills. The good thing about Chris in UMVC3 is, he can get very solid damage after a throw/air throw and that includes any character that uses tri dash/air dashes to get in (Magneto, Storm, Doom, etc). Hope this helps.

Man, it was really nice of GCYoshi to just go ahead and answer your question. A class act, that guy:

4(hours):03 and 4:15

I just finished watching that finals against PR Rog, what a blow out! GC Yoshi at his best is quite scary, but I do wonder if PR Rog knew the match up at all, because it didn’t seem like it.

It’s possible. I’m pretty sure they come up against each other a bunch. Though Chris can be awkward to play against and backed up by drones (and played well) can be a goddamn brick wall.

Unrelated: Does anyone know if any version of this still works?

I know the magnum doesn’t cause an infinite number of hard knockdowns anymore, but does it work the first time? I’m trying to figure out a way for Chris to land a grenade super solo after a launch. There’s a part of me that believes he can hit 900k solo without a lvl3 at least in the corner, and I think being able to do a full combo into grenade super then sweep is the way to go.

Almost positive that only the first and second magnum would cause a hard knockdown (maybe not even the second). Can’t test it out at the moment, but 900K solo would be really legit. That combo was nuts though. Wish I could have seen it back when that game was around.

I miss the old hard knockdown properties on magnum and combination punch, but bottom line is, the new pistol cancel is wayy better by comparison anyway…it just took away some of Chris’s more unique and stylish combo’s…

I know I said “two weeks” two weeks ago for a video, but it’s taking much longer than expected. I’m just trying to be sure that I’m not giving bad advice. I don’t want to be even a little wrong. So I’ve been discussing the character with other players and taking a bunch of different assists online (which has been hilarious, by the way, since I don’t know how to use most of these characters). So I’m thinking maybe…another week? 10 days? Something like that.

I’m sure it will be worth the wait.

I just started playing chris today and I’m having trouble opening people up. Any tips?

In a nutshell…

For characters that have to go in (Wolverine, Magneto, Storm), proximity mine is your friend. I like to use a wait and punish strategy for these characters because a lot of the times, you won’t be able to zone them out successfully.

LEARN YOUR GRAB COMBO’S! Because of the fact that Chris hits very hard and has a flamethrower cancel, with the right assist, Chris can do almost 800k off a grab from pretty much anywhere on the screen. Characters like Dante, Vergil, and Wesker love to rely on teleport to avoid Chris’s zoning, so one throw is all you need.

Characters that zone (Deadpool, Taskmaster, Dormammu), unfortunately, it’s hard to outzone most of the characters that do zone because Chris lacks any aerial keepaway capabilities, but magnum helps a lot. Magnum beats most other projectiles (Ryu & Akuma’s fireball, Doom’s Plasma Beam, Zero’s fireball) but it’s not safe and can be punished even from a far by anyone who has a beam super. Don’t forget that prone can help with some situations as well.

My advice is to watch GCYoshi, Windzero, and/or LLND who have good success with Chris on point in the tournament circuit. This should give you a visual lesson on what to do against some of the more used and stronger characters.

Wow thanks for replying!

is it true chris has invincible frames coming up from prone stance?

I’ve heard it takes on the properties of waking up. I think it’s ten frames, but I’m not sure.

(Ugh. My lazy ass is still alive.)

I’ll be updating this on Friday, “for real” this time, since there’s really no excuse for my sloth even if I still don’t have frame data because I’m obviously still around and that’s going to change on Monday.

As for Chris being invincible getting for Prone Position, I think that’s still only if he gets crossed-up, since then he gets up automatically; unless that’s changed in the latest patch, which I still have no idea what that actually changed, especially since we had to find out about the Flamethrower thing ourselves, then that should still be the same. I was going to link to Lord Zaldivar’s video of this, but it would appear he closed his Youtube account, so…

What a shame, that video was sick. I’m thinking prone will be what takes Chris play to the next level at some point. If I could give Chris one simple buff, it’d be to allow him to cancel whiffed normals into prone.

(Funny how I always end up spelling “Friday” as “Saturday”. Lazy git…)

So, with (old, slightly inaccurate) frame data finally input, I’ve at least started “contributing” to the thread again. My apologies again for letting it get so bad. I would have liked to input more, but I have another project I need to finished with before tomorrow and another one I need to start before today ends. I also took an unfortunate nap earlier, so I’ve wasted even more time. I did, however, make some amendments to thinks like Satellite Laser and Body Blow (I was way off on the vocal cue for that.)

I’m not sure what else people want to see, especially since I’ve shown myself to be lazy, untrustworthy and mediocre at best. However, even with school starting up for me, again, I should be around a lot still. Before this weekend ends, I’m going to at least try to do some of the following:

  1. Check the initial post for typos again.

  2. Update Flamethrower’s section.

  3. Update Prone Position’s section.

  4. Update assists section.

  5. Update “versus” section.

  6. Link to videos of Bum and other Chris players in the front page.

And maybe some other things that slip my addled mind right now. I’ll try get the guide for this game on Monday, though I’ve said that before, so please don’t hold your breath.

I’m still curious, though: Does anyone know what the last patch actually “fixed”/changed? I keep harping this even though it probably did nothing to Chris because they didn’t tell us about the change to Chris’s Flamethrower in the patch before that.

I’m pretty sure all it did was remove the alt costume glitch. Chris’ capabilities are pretty much up to date.

Just a reminder: The west coast edition of Curleh Mustache is on Sunday and Yipes is secretly a big Chris fan. Consequently, LLND, GCYoshi and Windzero are all going to be there. Should be plenty to see (and steal).
