Axl isn’t top cause he loses to Slayer and you have to be a better player to win vs almost anyone but Anji . IMHO

Cuz it takes forever to start up read: YOU WILL GET KILLED.
On top of that, the damage sucks and it uses all your tension. It’s only good in survival mode. 
As some one mostly just starting GG, is there any character that is particularly user friendly? I understand that it is a very tech heavy game, and hoping there is a good character to help transition myself into the game.
Sol and Ky are great for beginners I’ve heard. Chipp is also great for learning the system mechanics as well. Thanks to Kasou at Dustloop when I started playing Chipp, I learn how be better at IADing(instant air dash) and FDB(faultless defense breaking). Jam is an option also. Baiken can be a little tricky with her GC(guard-cancels).
More importantly: What kind of character do you like? Who has caught your interest?
I tend to like every character in games. There is no real consistency to preference (Say, grapplers over projectile spammers). It only gets narrowed down after further playing. Which is why for now I’m just curious about good introductory characters to get used to the system.
Well all you can do is test the cast out. Play around for a while and see what happens.
i still think slayer is slightly overrated.
he is obviously not as good as eddie or testament.
and loses to potemkin, may gives him a hard time…etc
yes he does hella damage. but being an s tier character imo means you do well against EVERYBODY. only eddie and testament fit into that category.

whatever you rate potemkin, imo. he’s only very slightly better than characters like baiken axl and jam.
He’s tied with Potemkin as either the best A rank or the weakest S rank.
And again, 4.5-5.5 being his “worst” matchups isn’t all that bad.
May giving him a hard time isn’t even all that true- the general answer to May is “stop mashing.”

He is better than half the cast, you know that right?
MOre than half IMHO, maybe it’s just me, but I feel like you have to work harder than most characters to get the same results. I main Axl, been playing him since XX and it’s always the same, feels like he doesn’t have a set gameplan, you just have to feel out the match and see what works. Where as when I play Aba,Pot, or faust the match typically revolves around a set method.
those three characters require a little less thought process to win with. The only time every character requires a lot of thinking is high level. AKA, the Japanese 
axl is really really good. dont get it twisted.
one of the most all around characters in the game.
And that’s why the matchup feels really difficult if people try to play it normally.
It’s also why they’re both really strong characters in AC.
