Im sorry but Dustloop.com is the worse place for a new player. Hardly any explanation on what a character is used for. venom, aba, may and robo ky have the best guides in their sections. Slayer’s is too technical for a newb to understand.
Just playing around works wonders believe it or not. That’s how I learned the basic stuff way before I even knew about Dustloop. Just dick around on your own and then the only problem you should have is terminology, that was the hurdle I had to get over at least.
What would people like in a guide? What are some good things in already existing guides.
What don’t people want in a guide?
How much is too much? How much is too little?
Should a guide explain enough to get their foot in the door, or should it tell them how to play the character?
Ehasyt?
(I meant to type “what?” extremely lazily while multi-tasking and not looking, but that will suffice for my confounded reaction.)
What are you smoking?
The Slayer guide is still one of the easier one’s to understand unless you’ve never played a fighting game at all; Venom doesn’t have an actual guide other than Ball Formations, which isn’t all there is to Venom; May’s guide is still the only one that makes me want to gouge out my eyes because of all the unnecessary, similar looking acronyms.
And what else would a character be “used for” other than beating up the other person that you can’t get from looking at a few videos, especially since that’s a different question entirely from how to play (in general).
Provided this isn’t rhetoric due to a lack of standard for writing a good guide, I will attempt to answer things I think are personally helpful.
-
Saying what at least all the special and super moves do. Even though normals are the most important for every character, there are too many normals for an accurate description and it would likely clutter up the beginning of the guide. I think it’s possible just to get by with “notable” normals.
-
No creating extra acronyms just for characters. If you want to call it something else, then call it something distinctive instead of throwing a bunch of similar letters at me. Acronyms mixed with already esoteric jargon very rarely helps things. The May guide is very guilty of this.
-
Length can vary, just as long as there are a few outlines of some things, such a noting who is a bad match-up and maybe a brief note about why or what the general playstyle of the character is.
-
A few of the easier combos, if any, would be nice.
-
Outlining tricks that have been around for a while just in case someone new comes along that hasn’t been playing previous installments, if there are any. This is only really about minor tricks that have an impact on gameplay, like Iori’s backwards HH b+B or Faust’s Drill Kick Cancel, and not really gimmicking things unless as a caution as such things are usually banned (such as Syo Hayate’s little disappearing act).
That’s still a lot, but I would prefer a guide be long unless it was meant to be a guide that could be useful at a brief glance.
Uh, not really. Have you posted in the thread to discuss why it’s hard for you to understand? It’s seriously one of the clearest guides out there, if not THE clearest.
Seriously, dustloops is a great site. Mods do a ridiculously good job of providing info and detail on the character. You can find detailed guides on EVERYTHING you need to know about a character, even the lesser used ones have ridiculously detailed guides. There’s also several guides to reading notations in the site, everything is there you just have to take the time to skim through.
Bridget and May forums are definitely two of the best, Kyle and Jais deserve mad props for what they do. The other character forums are also solid.
All of the mods are more than happy to respond to anyone’s questions and give feedback…it’s why we’re there. There’s a lot of us that know what we’re doing, so even if people don’t understand the finer points of a guide, all they need to do is ask. If you really don’t like certain things about DL, don’t complain about them here - if you think the Slayer guide could be more noob friendly, post up in the Slayer forums and say something.

runs away and cries
honestly the best part of the slayer forum is they have a thread dedicated to strategy/matchups and a thread dedicated to useful gimmicks.
speaking of dustloop
how come it won’t let me register?
I’ve even tried contacting the admin.
I love dustloop, such a great site!
I love to post undiscussed simple questions about certain characters, only to have them ignored completely.
All hail dustloop and its awesome people </sarcasm>
That’s because you play characters nobody wants to talk about…
SCRUBS!
Anyhow DL is pretty inconsistent because of people having lives OR not having lives but instead playing video games rather than posting on the internet (or spending their lives to play video games on the internet)… but the whole “omg too complicated for new players” thing has been getting way out of hand.
First off… read the FAQ in the section labeled “The Foundation” titled “Gameplay FAQ - READ BEFORE POSTING.” Foundations are a good place to start.
After reading it, messing around in training mode, and formulating a good, specific question (ie. better than “how do I play this character?”)… you can then read the character threads and see if people have addressed it somehow already, now that you have a basic idea of what moves do. And on the off chance that you genuinely have a question that can’t be figured out with 10 minutes of training mode/playing against a human being, and it hasn’t been addressed in the forums…
Immediately go to SRK and whine that Dustloop sux. Do this repeatedly.
Or do the logical thing and ask the freaking question on Dustloop. Ask it again on SRK if you want to be sure someone knowledgeable will catch it, if you really want to.
actually forget it omg dustloop sux they diddn’t tell me exactly what button to press to beet the jpnezz
people there can be assholes, but you do have to give them credit for all the work they do put into the guides and (recently) how they’ve tried to orginize them. Maybe if people stopped hating on them so much they wouldn’t be that way?
indeed
mamation, why did you pussy out of nec
i was sad :crybaby:
my regional manager wouldnt let me?
orka, how long have you had the Haruhi-ism av back yo
it’s seriously throwing me off D:
Also I recently played Slash, omg I miss playing Slash and #R Dizzy, AC characters can’t compare to that level of fun. wtf
also Slash Johnny omg
I like AC and all but it’s nice playing Slash, it’s like 2 totally different games at this point.
lol, #r dizzy was so cheap. her old cross up combo was sooo strong:
h fish > iad > j.h > land > 2d > ice spike frc > iad > j.p > j.h > land > j.k > j.s > jc > j.s > j.d
or just do damage reset off j.h with the non-scaling air throw. man, those were the days.
Yeah the threads at Dustloop were pretty imitidating for me when I first read it… Then I read the Foundation faq, familiarized myself with the terminology… and it slowly made sense… When I asked questions about Beginner Venom, someone referred me to the Reload guide… And I wondered, “Why would I learn shit from an older version of the game?” I looked over it anyway, got the basics down, and then switched to the AC thread… all the combos and setups made perfect sense if not more deadlier and amazing…
Like CD said… there are probably threads that already answered your question… just use the search function…
And remember… Being an asshole is not forum specific… lol
EDIT: Similar to how I go to Orochinagi for KOF XI stuff, because there are probably people who are frequent low-tier users
i was just playing GGX an hour ago
johnny is so good
