Getting more people to play ur game:Regarding James Chen's suggested course of action

Meet jchensor: Evolution 2010 Season Wrap Up

After reading the above article I decided to check what’s up with people of the SF4 forum and these are the results.
IMO the results are surprisingly good and show us that many SF4 players are (or can be) open minded, maybe even eager, to play other games as well.

So we know what we need to do. The question is how do we do it?

Besides posting tutorials for different games, I have been thinking about trying some sort of personal tutoring program- per game, per character.

For example if I main’ed Bob ever since T6 was out, and I know enough about him to help a new Bob player, then I post “T6:Bob” in the tutoring thread and a new Tekken player who wants to learn Bob and doesn’t even know where to start can PM me his questions and maybe even show me a match he lost so I can tell him what he did wrong.

It’s different from just posting questions in the Bob thread @ the SRK T6 forum because the personal contact with a specific person can make a huge difference in the learning process and the motivation to improve.

If you have another idea or if you want to be a part of this kind of tutoring program please reply.

man there are a bunch of saltay fuckers in that comment thread on his blog

A friend was telling me that in Taiwan, people set-up an extra tv during tourneys/sessions where a new player (or someone who just wants to learn more) can sit down with a pro at the set-up, ask questions, and have it shown to him on screen.

Basically, if good or knowledgeable players have a bit of free time; they can sit at a set-up where people are directed to if they wanna ask questions learn. First benefit is that not only will they be gaining tourney and casual experience anyway; but also some free tutoring. And yeah let’s not turn this into a discussion about people who charge for this; because that won’t help. What will, is actually implementing this, and you don’t need to get those that charge involved.

i registered just to ask this (been lurking a long time)

everyone in my city play only tekken 6 so im the only one that bothers with GG and BB and the thing is they dont want to try anything else. even if i promise to teach them how to play these games and explained whats so awesome about them. the only response i get is the usual “2d the games suck. i know this because it ive never bothered to learn them and they look cartoony. tekkens is the best”

im getting pretty sick of tekken to be honest. so how can i get tekken fanboys to try other games?

Kick their ass @ their own game. From the sound of it they don’t seem to be high level players at all.

ive been doing that for quite some time now except 1 of them is pretty equal

yea, most of them arent but theres 2 that are good

“You play my game, I play your game.” That’s what you do when there’s only a few of you and each player wants to play a different game. (Since you are 1/3 of the high level player base it shouldn’t be hard)
Also as one of the best local players you can be more convincing when promoting other games to the lesser players. (You are much better than them in tekken so your opinion means something)
You can even show them footage from events like evo and sbo where tekken is played alongside 2d games.

And if all else fails just make sure to improve as much as you can at tekken (and most importantly- get tournament experience and practice playing under pressure) so that your general FG skill will improve and when the time comes for other games you’ll just transfer your experience over.
That’s what I did in the days when Tekken was popular and no one even knew what GG was.

Tekken fanboys tend to be the most insufferable of fighting game fanboys. Good luck.

I don’t think you can be a high level player and still be uninformed about all the rest of the games in the genre.

I’m just talking about fanboys. Most of the high level Tekken players I know are cool peoples.

This sounds like a good idea. Maybe it would even be possible to make some short videos showing similarities between games to spark interest. I think this could get it’s own GD folder in the Strategy zone and be dedicated to people looking into learning a new game.

heres a tip: dont bother

I’d still be playing GG by myself vs the CPU with that attitude.

I say go for it, if enough people are willing.

find people who wanna play a game and learn and then fucking own them at the game and tell them theyre your bitch and theyre never gonna be good and just not to try

That used to work wonders awhile back, but I was surprised to see that doing that sometimes will actually make most people give up the game…

SF4 + A time and community that revolves around sense of entitlement = no no

i was gonna write an article about how james chen’s article was bad but i couldn’t keep myself motivated to do it. basically my points were going to be:

people who don’t like sf4 have to come to the realization that part of its fanbase can be brought into other games. i believe james made this point.

if you want to get other people to your game, you should offer the new people a route into the game that they may like. For instance, if their character is rushdown oriented, tell them that the game you play has rushdown mechanics which are far more fleshed out than SF4. If they like to turtle, tell them that there are games where turtling can be done extensively. This isn’t to say that SF4 didn’t do any playstyle archetype correctly, it’s just to say: give different alternatives to people if they like one aspect of the game. The point was to be very specific, though. but yeah in my case, mvc2 is pretty dead and mvc3 isn’t going to help any.

slightly offtopic: i think the reason srk is so bad and annoying is cuz it’s in a reboot stage where it’s basically restarting and getting all new people to make a whole 'nother community. but it barely started so this is part of the awkward stage…but that would explain all these crappy polls and ‘news’ topics. in the long run, more active people could only mean a stronger core.

you got sf4 players to play gg? you must live in some bizarro world

I think the tutoring idea is good. It might help reduce n00b threads and will help build more community between long time members and newer ones, who of course will be long time members eventually.

People wanting SF4 players to try other games should put themselves in the SF4 players spot. Exactly how many other games did you try and play that weren’t mainstream back when your favorite game was still in tournaments? Exactly, you players that never tried anything new are getting what you deserve a dying scene.
