Getting lost in the beat: Dee Jay Video Thread (front page updated 1/16/12)

CT to CA is unplayable over psn. Just ask people to play in neighboring states. And I’m not only referring to your videos, but nemesys’s as well. And it’s funny you mention i fight good players cause I’ve fought ricky ortiz more than anybody these past 2 years. I believe I’ve fought him 5 times already -_- in pools.

Most dee jays panic when they’re not hitting a button or doing a special which is a huge mistake (this causes them to slide or throw stupid fireballs). Sometimes the best thing you should do is absolutely nothing. Wait for opponent reaction and keep walking backwards. Only throw max outs at 3/4 screen or up in their face. Don’t whiff dread kicks. Don’t mash on suicidal reversals, instead just backdash, block and tech. People get too lazy with defense in this game cuz reversals are retardedly good. Sometimes you just have to sit their and block like it’s marvel.

Akimo wins because he has a very dry play style. He’s walking backwards 3/4 of the time and just punishing impatience while observing his own spacing. He doesn’t do tricky shit and because he plays honda, he’s got good defense since he never liked to spam reversal headbutt (he is godly at teching). The only time he’s jumping really is if he’s either

  1. predicting an opponent is going to throw a fireball or put himself in a vulnerable state w/o AA (stand-up, use a normal, throw a projectile, dash, focus)
  2. he covers his jump with a slow ass lp max out
  3. he jumps in on somebody that’s just jumped themselves meaning they can’t reversal since they’re waiting to land
  4. he’s abusing knee shot’s retardedly good jump arc

Only other thing I can say is people who don’t AA w/ slide, s.mp and s.hp are going to get murdered forever. S.mp is situationally godlike and so is slide in certain match-ups. S.hp is an anti-crossup and a counter-hit launch. You can also AA with jump-forward fierce, knee shot and jump-backs depending on how good your reaction time is.

i play well in tourneys. i do everything you mentioned, but i don’t have tourney vids up.

all the stuff you said is general knowledge tho.

st. mp. is ok but amazing when used in the right situation.

st. hp is hard for me to use because i always want the CH so i end up pressing the button too late.

i have a friend in LA and we play a decent yellow bar. my connect is 15 mbps how bout yours?

Sbc dsl :crybaby:

The important lesson here, is that you should get Xbox Live.

Although I find Deejays best punishes usually involve full hits with MGU, be it just one crouching short to confirm and heavy version or EX into Ex Dreads. Whatever it is, it needs to be a knockdown.

my punish of choice is cr. mp x mk dreads > hk dreads

I actually had a video I wanted to upload earlier, featuring me versus a Rufus, cause it really highlighted some of the things Deejay can beat Rufus on.

But when I tried using my crappy webcam, it couldn’t pick up what was on the screen, so I need a slightly better option. Any advice on a way to get it from my Xbox, onto my laptop?

yea you can get a usb video capture card for cheap on ebay. i think that’s what threi told me he used.

yeah i am using an easycap, dunno the specs of your laptop though: if the cpu isn’t good enough it will drop frames

So these two videos were from a tournament I recently played at. I win both matches, but there is definitely a lot of room for improvement. A few things i do know about my play/these matches though:

  1. I rely on that crossup too much, i know.
  2. I’m sad that i dropped the c.jp,c.jp,c.sp,rh dreak kick>>super in match 1.

any other things you guys notice would be much appreciated. I understand i’m probably not that good of a DJ, but i’m always willing to get better and rep for an underappreciated character.

EDIT: i realized i’m stupid and messed up my tags, so they’re fixed now.

your links don’t work, for me at least.

Hmmmm, there is nothing wrong with missing the Super combo, I’m not the type who hordes meter though, I use it graciously. But like it and the love of the crossup, it happens with Deejay. Not bad, a ridiculous amount of sliding, on sakura no less. Solid enough to win that match, although what I’m about to say next might ruffle your tailfeathers alittle bit.

That Sakura, was pretty free. Knew next to nothing about the matchup, let you slide all over the ground, and jumped in at whatever chance she could get. I’d suggest mixing a few more throws in there and learning how to make the crossup come down on the opposite side convincingly. It’s one of Deejays best tools, and theres nothing wrong with loving it, you should just evolve on it. If they had known the matchup, or alot more about there character, it might have been a challenge. Get more bang for your buck if you’re going to rely on c. mk so heavily, it is the best c. mk in the game and there is no dispute on that, but just safely comboing it off jabs and shorts dwarfs why it is so great. Learn some more hard hitting combos you can setup off a successful c.mk.
Good work, keep up the beat, keep practicing.

Like i even said in my post with the vids, i know i’m not the best, and now that i have a few videos of me playing, i have shit i can study from and you guys here can help me evolve my game. i appreciate the advice and i’ll never be bother so long as there is constructive thought into it.

Hey Flying V, pretty good stuff. My main recommendation is to use LK Upkick as your go to anti-air instead of slide for evasion.

I play mostly Rose, so I slide to evade jumps sometimes (for a throw afterward). But Rose’s slide is quicker than Dee Jays. I could imagine you getting punished if a player really caught on to you and you let him get away with jumping on you enough.

Like would you use slide to get away from Zangief or T. Hawk jumping on you? If anything, you’re being polite by not teaching them it’s not OK to jump. LK Upkick is one of the best anti-airs in the game honestly. EX Upkick is well worth the meter also. so try to incorporate those more than slide.

I dont know how many times I’ve done exactly what you did in match 1 r1. Ryu/Ken misses with fierce dragonpunch and I fail to capitalise in time, when it costs me the match I could actually kill myself.

I can honestly say, all whiffed fierce dp’s get cr.hp, ex upkicked without fail as my go to punish.

ah that, i always underestimate the recovery time of ken’s fierce/ex DPs.

why waste the meter? you could cr. fierce/ cr. strong x mk upkicks > hk upkicks

processing.

if you go through my channel i also uploaded one with commentary. i think the video quality on that one might be better.
