Depending how the Grant player is playing you have to create those openings. Kevin shouldn’t really have problems vs Grant. Overall the match up is pretty even though. I would say it’s more in Kevin’s favor. What is the Grant player doing that is giving you problems exactly?
Hi Garou ppl, so I have decided to main this game when not playing Vampire Savior (Once upon a time, I played a couple of matches and lurked the GGPO room under a different username). I like Rock but I think I am gonna main Freeman and Gato/B. Jenet. I’ve searched the board for Freeman info and it seems like maining him naturally comes with a few questions. This seems like a good place to spill 'em, So:
-
How many frames does counterhit add on crouch. Particularly when using Freeman’s qcb+k? I swear that I comboed an cr.lk once on the cpu after a counterhit qcb+k.
-
Is it worth my time to practice High dodge attack as a dedicate anti-air? (Besides backdashing and the occasional “lucky cl.HK” on slow hoppers)
-
Is there invincibility on his special moves? If so, then which ones? Is there a reference somewhere?
-
Gato question: Is there a possible plinking method for his stomp cancel?
-
When’s a good time to be on GGPO? Too many Brazilians.
EDIT: UGH… my profile doesn’t display handles anymore, I’m maddo23
pardon me, what i was saying about Kevin was that even though hes top tier, he has opening for me to exploit, Grant on the other hand I don’t find them. I was speaking match up general wise.
I generally use freeman for majority of my match ups except grant which I find nearly impossible to manage even if i counter pick.
I’ll answer them in the order you posted them.
-All counter hits are the same on the ground if they are standing or crouching. If they happen in the air, the time it last depends on the height the character was counter hit in. It’s pretty simple getting a counter hit with Freeman from :qcb: + :snkb:/:snkd: from the second hit then give you time to connect a normal after like stand far :snka: or :d: + :snkb:.
-It’s good practice the timing on getting the :d: + :snka: + :snkb: to hit as an AA. It can be risky though if the player knows it’s coming. Just be cautious on not using it everytime to try to AA someone.
-The thing about Freeman’s specials is he does’t have much invincibility on them. His supers do but compared to other characters it doesn’t last as long. Thing to take note about most of Freeman’s specials besides his break move :hcf: + :snkb:/:snkd: and :qcb: + :snkb:/:snkd: is that they cause his hitbox to shrink slightly since he’s always crouching in the middle of their animations. Good thing about that is it can create counter hit opportunities since most players never notice the hitbox change. A good example would be to play the AI Freeman on level 8 to see what he uses to beat out certain things. Yea it’s not the best example but it’s a good way to learn why the AI chooses the select specials with freeman. The problem with his specials in general besides his :qcb: + :snka: reka is that they have slight start up. You will need to rely more on poking in general to create openings or get hits in.
-For doing Gato’s stomp it’s really just getting the timing on it. You can double tap :snka: to create better chances of landing it but overall it’s not too hard to get the timing on it. All I can really say is practice.
-GGPO seems pretty random on times to join the room at least from my experience. I can’t really answer this on for you since I’m barely ever on GGPO now. I’m pretty busy most of time with other things.
Again I ask what exactly is the Grant player doing in general that doesn’t give you openings? The match up itself is in favor of Grant since he has answers for all of Freeman’s pokes. You have to play very defensive in the match in order to win.
Grants generally rush down relentlessly. If at a distance they close in with :qcf:B,D if attack it usually beaten, if guard then they mix up with knockdown or instant overhead into dive kick which if I don’t JD either than my opponent is at the advantage. I rarely jump since it generally leads to being juggle into a corner to endure the shenanigans again.
I can’t utilize JD into guard cancel on reaction. Which has left the match up overwhelming to deal with as JD is the only opening I can get off an predictable action. For many occasion I had to settle with JD to throws due to my lacking abilities.
And any offensive momentum i do achieve its immediately JD to GC, I sacrifice many hit confirms in fear of GC and once he has super he can close in safely.
I understand freeman has to be defensive but being defensive for too long for me leaves me prone to mix ups which grants leads to big damage or further mix up
thanks
question about marco. his A dp is +2 on block after a break, so why do I see marco players backdash so much when they get it blocked?
btw if any euro peeps want matches my name is Kareeeeem on GGPO.

Thanks. I was seriously under the impression he had slight invincibility. sad face. I didn’t mean to overload on questions but there isn’t as much Garou knowledge floating on the american web… not like VS.
It’s possible to try to be aggresive vs the Grant player. Sometimes you have to play risky to create openings. It can also be a bad thing because one mistake vs Grant with meter hurts. It’s true that most of Grant’s special give him enough time to recover and continue pressure. Since Freeman doesn’t have the fastest specials it’s hard to scare off Grant players overall. The only real option in the match up is JDing then GC on reaction to punish his pokes, specials, etc. I think in the long run if you play defensive well enough then the Grant player will probably get reckless trying to land hits. That gives you the chance to punish easier from the reckless actions.
It is safe but usually when stuff like that happens is because they want to bait something from the opponent. You still get pushed back though for the break on block. So it creates that gap there for the opponent to try sticking something out to keep Marco off them. Like a reveral super or reveral special with high priority etc. It’s sometimes better to be safe than sorry. It also depends on the character they are playing against.

No worries that’s why I’m here to help. There will be some major work in the coming weeks getting the wiki together to make things easier for everyone. Hopefully Giby and I can get all the important info updated for each character. We are also planning some tutorial videos in the future with the elive pocast. We will go over option selects for each character and match up stuff in general. Things you can use to beat out certain things, etc. You get the idea.
That does seem to be the appropriate way to deal with his match up. I’m normally do well in tight situations but this match up seems to be my exception.
Hey guys, I’m down for learning stuff and playing casuals at evo. I’ll PM my contact. I’m looking forward to this weekend.
Just wondering, anything going down Thursday night? Also, I can give my contact if anyone wants to get some games in. Just shoot me a PM.
PM me… DigitalGypsy and myself will more than likely be playing.
Most of us will be there Thurs night. Me and Giby should be in Vegas by 3pm. I’m driving there. We staying at the Rio. I’m down to play all night too :D.
EPIC Garous will be had!!!
Yes there will be. Looking forward to meeting everyone hopefully by tomorrow if everything goes as planned.
Wow, i didn’t know noc was going to EVO too.
I hope to see tons of videos about those epic garous later
So, I haven’t been playing Garou since my PSone Dual Shock got messed up a few weeks ago (down direction doesn’t work well anymore, but I suspect it just needs to be cleaned). What happened was I was cleaning it with high purity alcohol, and some of it must’ve seeped down under the d-pad and did something to the contact sheet.
I think I can make it out to one of the Philly meets, but jt4, do you think you or anyone else could help me make a franken-mod of my controller? I have two identical controllers that need a few internals swapped so I can have a usable controller again. Problem is, I can’t get one of them open due to 1-2 stripped screws. Need someone with some expertise on this sorta thing, I feel like I’m gonna break this shit if I try.
wondering who was the b. jenet player that I played at CEO? I was playing mainly Kevin.
This game is so underrated but so good. Its cool to see some people still enjoy it.
Can anyone explain this in detail ? Does that mean, the player that attempts to tick throw has to input “down” and it will litteraly shorten the window before being able to throw ?
That would explain some troubles I have to de-throw…
