"Get out your Popcorn!" Rufus Video Thread

I used to think this way when Itabashi came to Singapore and beat the shit out of me (went something like 11-1, i think).

But I’ve discovered quite a bit of stuff since then… seriously think that Sagat is the hardest match up still.

Okay important points against Zangief:

  1. Throw beats Ex Hand and Lariat. This means after knock down, throw the shit out of Zangief on wake up, until he starts trying to do other stuff like backdash/upwards jump/tech throw, which can all be beaten by different stuff if you anticipate it- sweep, crouch MP, low dive kick.

  2. Jump MK cross up has a 70% chance of beating Lariat on wake up. The other 30% comes from timing variances, etc. The best two set ups for this are after a forward throw> dash forward X2> jump forward MK and after Ex Messiah> LK> walk backwards a little> jump forward MK.

  3. Stand HP and crouch MK are both good counter pokes against s.MP. You gotta try them to get used to the timings though. Stand HP is especially good since its an anti-air that also beats lariat… which means stand HP is a good footsie tool against Zangief in general.

  4. Ex Galactic Tornado is he’s getting to comfortable with the walking slappy stuff.

  5. Crouch HP is always good as long as you’re unpredictable. Even against a good Gief who can counter poke with c.LP> Ex Green Hand, the risk/reward ratio is still in your favour, AS LONG as you’re unpredictable with it (don’t always do it at max range… even within half range, its good as long as you don’t think the opponent expects it) AND you’re ready to Ex Snake Strike all jump in attempts.

  6. Stand MK and stand LP from their max distance aren’t going to hit a lot or do a lot of damage, but you have to use them to control the space so that Zangief doesn’t get to walk forward for free.

  7. Learn to do the Ultra motion without standing up- d,df,d,df, f+PPP. Best Lariat punish.

How do you prevent yourself frmo getting intot he corner against gief? I find myself staying still for a bit…but once he gets close i move myself further and further into the corner…and then i die.

Fatteninly juicy info! Now about that wake up throw beating lariats, does it beat SPD wake up grabs? or is this assuming that a good gief player wont spam wake up SPD just like a good shoto wont spam wake up srk without 2 ex bars?

Yeah it’s hard because you only have to mess up up about once or twice before you are in the corner vs gief.

to stay on the gief topic here’s a vid of KINDEVU facing a gief with some interesting play.

I’m gonna start implementing his wake up cross up dive kick to LP SS on gief (or was that mp SS?). He got him with it everytime, good replacement for when you want to cross up without Jesus Kick.

Here is my Youtube Channel. I have got quite some Rufus matches of me on there.
I appreciate any tips/critisism (mainly on the Soest videos… since the FFM-Rumble Vids where taken after a short night and long day :D)

especially ideas against Sagat (the sets vs chillcut) should help me even if this matchup is a pain in the ass (+ we play together since sf4 release…)

Good Rufus! Better than mine, certainly. Then again, I only play online, so, yeah

Still, I do notice that your gambling on regular Messiah to get in almost ALWAYS gets roundhoused in the face. That Sagat really, really likes tossing out roundhouses when you’re just out of range, too. I’m pretty sure a cr.mp can smack his roundhouse in the shin while also catching a Tiger Knee at that distance, though I could be wrong about the TK thing. I DO know that cr.mp beats out regular TK at certain distances. So when you’re ducking under his roundhouses, try tossing out a cr.mp occasionally, just to punish him for it.

Yeah well, i usually don’t have so much trouble against Sagat players but he know me very well since we play alot together and he basically know how to play Sagat vs. Rufus.
I usually always manage to reach the distance where he can’t shoot anymore since im too close but his roundhouse beats almost every move of Rufus and even hits when i try to crossup.
I basically try to knock him down with c.HK then to gain the advantage but the roundhouse is quite tricky to punish with c.HK.

In on of our last sessions i played around with far s.HK and forward HP and they sometimes work surprisingly good
I might try some more c.MP and i know they beat out TK quite often and the roundhouse but i they don’t bring me any closer to him

btw. i play almost exclusively offline (im still in g2 online…) and i can’t complain about Rufus =)

It’s true that you don’t get any closer, but you still do decent damage, right? In the matches I saw, it seemed like he was pretty much whiffing several roundhouses in a row for free, with you ducking under his kicks and doing nothing… If you can manage to discourage him from random roundhouses or even think harder before he did them, you’d take away a bit of his gameplan, and every bit helps, right?

hello rufus players,
i have been recording first to 10 sets with players from each character in sf4 as a self improvement project.
normally i post these in the gouken video forums, but i thought you might enjoy the set i had with pistolah.

liked the commentary, nice gouken u got there, will look for u when ssf4 drops

Heres my match against a bison in the SFCCL tournament.

Any pointers

First off, good job on the win. That Bison was no match for you. But there are still things you can improve on. This is just one video so I’m not sure what you do or don’t know just from this.

You basically won those matches without doing one single combo. That shows how poor the Bison was and how much more you could have destroyed him. The Bison had no clue what or how to punish Rufus’s moves.

Your tick throws were good. It setted up the throw baits that occured after dive kicks. Problem is you didn’t punish it to the fullest. Learn how to dive kick lower to link the Dive kick -> s.lk -> s.hp -> hp GT.

In one part of the match, you tried to do s.lk -> s.lk -> s.hp but the HP came out as a far standing hp because you weren’t close enough to bison. If you’re not close enough, do s.lk -> s.lk -> c.lk -> EX GT instead. Just practice your combos until it’s in your muscle memory.

MK and HK Scissors kick is punishable with c.lp -> EX GT
EX Devil’s Reverse Landing can be punished with throw or s.lk to whatever. It’s a very small window but is very rewarding when you do punish it.

Alot of EX messiah’s is going to win you matches at low/mid level comp, but not at the higher levels. That bison could have focused to whatever or even Ultra you on each of your blocked messiahs. Instead, he tried throwing you after the HK followup lol.

In a match with a good bison player, you’ll have to worry about s.HK. It’ll stop alot of your options. This bison didn’t use it much and payed for it.

I have a time log so you can see some of the things you could have done better.

0;26 dive kick not low enough on baited throw

0:29 HK scissorkick needs to be punished : c.lp to Ex GT

1:04 EX devil’s reverse land can be punished with throw or s.lk to combo

1:46 EX devil’s reverse land can be punished with throw or s.lk to combo

2:37 dive kick not low enough on baited throw

2;45 dive kick not low enough on baited throw

3:38 S.HK connected. Shoulda been EX Snake strike

It’s kinda tough to critique this match because you just basically beated him down. It’ll be better to post an even match or one that you lost. That way we can see the holes in your game much easier.

The match WAS online though, so in his defence it’s kinda hard to get out a 1-frame link every single time.

Thanks man I really appreciate the break down. I have been concentrating more on lk lk hp because I have been more consistent at it then the lk hp. But I’m going to go through the break down again and watch the film and really concentrate and what you showed me thanks alot.

I’m not too worried about the one-frame link combos. I’m more concerned about the height of the dive kicks. But that can also be due to lag. As I said, it’s just one match and it was online. But if you see these problems offline too then it’s something to work on.

Just remember the lk lk hp combo only works when you’re DEEP into the opponent. In some cases you have to have a deep dive kick for it to work. Otherwise you will get FAR standing HP, which will not combo. In those situations where you aren’t close enough, just do s.lk -> s.lk -> c.lk -> EX Galactic Tornado. This combo is not a one-frame link. It’s a 3 frame link.

This is more SF4 advice and less Rufus specific advice, but be more conscious of screen control. Obviously Rufus is strongest in the corner, but at the beginning of a lot of matches you start by walking backwards and continuing to walk backwards before you’re ready to attack. There were other times where he was in the corner and you crossed him up and didn’t have time to cross back over. In the former situation, you just don’t want to be surrendering that much space without good reason. In the latter, if you cross up and he successfully blocks then you’re in the corner and you give him him a get out of jail free card. Do what you can to keep people trapped in that corner. Rufus’s corner game is ridiculous as I’m sure you know and all the pressure you can apply can even make really good players do dumb stuff. I’m not saying never cross up in the corner, just be conscious of why and how you’re doing it.

A few other things. Too many messiah’s like ranma said. Be more careful with those. I also noticed that when you got within a certain range, like max jump in range, you would either jump hp or hp tornado to get close. It worked against this guy but can be bad in practice if you make a habit out of it. You’ll get punished on reaction for that stuff. The best way to close distance imo is to just walk forward and be ready to block and anti air.

Great stuff I guess I tend to walk backward a lot because I want to see what kind of strategy my opponent is going to play. But great points I really appreciate it.

Played some matches against someone in my friend list who absolutely destroys me most of the time. Could any of you guys give me some advice? I’ve noticed some things myself (obvious stuff like how I should stop doing random ultras or constantly doing meaty dive kicks) but I have the feeling I just don’t understand how to play some of these matches/characters.

A bunch of me and my friends went to Japan to watch the Nationals. The day before, a 5v5 regional tournament was held (consisting mostly/wholly of players who would be playing in the Japanese nationals), and the organiser very kindly allowed me and friends to take part.
