Georgia fighting game scene "Growing our scene is the key "

Gonna be holding a KoF session at my place on Wednesday. Pm for details. Even if you are just learning the game come through!

I agree with your post tray.

With that in mind i’m going to start frbats again as a regular monthly tournament and not every 2 weeks like before. I see that I was asking too much and bnb is and should be the regular weekly events in Ga. I will also keep my events on sunday just so people will get use to that date for future events. There won’t be another frbats until after july. I’ll post up a new thread soon, but going to Evo has given me new hope for our scene. I hope i’m not wrong again.

do you understand that Danny ferry should be “Ex of the year” with the HOE JOHNSON TRADE ALONE!

I wholeheartedly agree with your post Iceman, but I also feel like the FGC in GA is too ATL-centric. Everything has to happen in ATL, so that kind of turns off people who aren’t near ATL. Why not start a series of weeklies (casual or competitive) in various places around GA? I know Augusta has a small scene, as does Macon/Warner Robins, so perhaps these new weeklies can attract more people to the community and then plan major stuff like Revival and Final Round for all of GA? Just an idea.

those players in those area’s have to start those events. We can only do what we can do in our area sir. It’s up to players in your area to get that going. I would suggest getting the gatherings bigger in your area before trying a tournament.

Thanks for the quick reply, but if you read my previous posts, our first gathering was quite the success (14-16 people showed up out of a possible 40 or so) but the bar we were at apparently didn’t like the idea of continuing and shut us down from doing future gatherings at the bar. It was strange as we were paying customers and were giving them business, but oh well, their loss. We’re still in the process of finding another place to do weeklies at.

I don’t really understand your point. If you are getting double digits at your gatherings then I don’t understand why it would be ATL TO’s responsibility to get something going in your area. You sound like you have the numbers to do whatever you need. And even if the monthlies are held in ATL, anyone who is interested in competing has PLENTY of time to make arrangements to come to one of these tournaments if they want to support the overall GA scene.

People are willing and have the ideas, but they lack the real necessary drive to make it happen. What Larry, Iceman, and other TO’s do takes alot of time and effort. If driving distance and other trivial things such as that stop you, then that’s on you.

Tifa - You’re going to more then likely fail way more then succeed before establishing your community of players because you have to put so much faith into people you hardly know. The only thing that you can rely on at the end of the day is the common interest that we as players have. Athens has historically been terrible when it comes to having any sort of community, and we simply saw that it wasn’t going to rival ATL or any other part of the region. Infact, we’re so non-existent historically that we’ve always been considered an out-post of ATL. I use to get so pissed about that, but then I realized that ATL, and its players, were the reason why I was even good at anything to begin with. Don’t take ATL being the focus of GA personally, trust me. Take those around you that are willing to learn and grow and nurture that the best you can. Everyone says they have the drive…but do you really?

Good luck to you.

Getting a permanent venue is the hardest part, which is all I’m pointing out, haha. We definitely have the capability to do gatherings and all, but getting a meeting place to do weeklies is difficult here for some reason. But you’re right, we should get out more to ATL. I just thought it would be nice for something out of ATL for a change.

Yeah I could imagine that would be challenging. But if you can develop something it’s not like no one from ATL would come. The last Augusta super had very solid numbers

My issue with this specifically is that B&B is in the middle of the week, which makes it a non-starter for those of us from out of state who would like to come out but work during the week.

Agreed on the rest of your entire post, btw.

One of the main reasons Ga’s FGC is mainly ATL Centric is because ATL players throughout Ga’s FG existence, have notoriously applied the work and effort to be relevant in every since of the word.
In each outside city or county there are exceptions but they are few and in between, you got Columbus who is pretty solid but its Korean Panda/Alternate and whomever he knows…and that’s pretty much it, you got Ethan Dogan/Dogysamich in warner robbins, whomever he knows…and that’s about it, Same with my brother out in Macon Aceuno, Same with the Brothers of Destruction Issac& Chris Greene up in Athens who do have Aaron Chestnut but he is never JUST at home in Athens he’s in north Ga, Augusta, you name it he’s there, Also applies to Rashid Reddy/Shinkuur out in Savannah.

Either way my point is, we as players read what people post about there own communities, about how people do not show or how it’s dead in the surrounding areas and that alone will keep some individuals from traveling to a Savannah, Macon, Columbus, Augusta etc it is a turn off.
In atlanta we have had dedicated places to train on a week by week basis in order for us to hone our skill so to speak, not everyone was apart of the funky bunch or the people who came up together, Yea I came up with Joe and Max but they were founded by Larry’s adopted son Justin Grey aka Omegabattlecat.
Excite Beast, Batman,Aceman etc were all extensions of someone already within the crew, these guys didn’t grow up with us, attend tournies with us etc so if they got in and made a name for themselves imagine what you could do with you and your community.

You cannot wait for top names in surrounding cities to quote on quote “Uplift” your city, it just doesn’t work like that, don’t get me wrong, its a positive thing to have Eddie, Aaron, Pokchop,Clint,Pig of the Hut and other top names to COME to your tournaments, your gatherings, your meets etc but if you are banking on those names to create community growth in your neck of the woods, well then you are waisting your time.

In regards to B&B being on a thursday, It worked out very well during the 1st couple of months but I can totally agree with out of towners not being able to attend on a week day for an event that takes them 2 plus hours too get to.

I personally want to have a sit down with Ga’s Tournament Organizers and compose a change to the landscape of how we as organizers do/run our tournaments here in the state of Georgia, I consider us the Major/Powerhouse state in a variety of games inside the south but we either
A.) never go anywhere to prove that
B.) No one comes here outside Final Round to dispute that
C.) Just don’t give a damn and want to claim an un-earned title

Is there a list of where the casual get togethers are? You’ve mentioned BnB as one but, I’m speaking for myself, it’s during the weekday and I’m generally not available. Is there a place during the weekends?
On top of that, what games are played? Chnchill mentioned that he/she does KOF but, speaking for myself again, I play mostly Capcom games.
I’ve posted before that I’m willing to have casual nights on Friday/weekends at my place in N. Atlanta but there wasn’t a large response to that. If anyone is in the N. Atlanta (75/285) area, let me know and I can host a casual night. If there is already such an event, I would like to know also.

On another note, Evo was great. I met a few people whom I’ve met before from ATL, TooMuchDamage and Keyzerjose. They were super nice!

Do you live anywhere near Roswell???

You know, to follow up on recent topics, the Huntsville guys are putting forth a more dedicated streaming effort in the near future and I think it would be beneficial to all of us if we started cross-promoting regional events on each other’s streams. Same goes for Pensacola and all the other people in the area who have a setup and broadcast events on a semi-regular basis. Wouldn’t hurt for all of us to whip up some quick promos to pass around.

About 15 minutes away from the roswell exit off of either 285 or 75.

Also, we are hosting a tourney Aug 4th and would love for you guys to come out. Tauseef, David Kim, & Herbie have already confirmed to come and are trying to bring up multiple cars. Myself and some other Marvel heads are coming down to Athens on the 20th for a UMvC3 crack session/Tauseef’s B’day and then riding up to ReSe with you guys. We’ll certainly be promoting our tourney the entire time.
