and yes i do believe that needed a serious strategy response
I use all of Yang’s supers when I’m not playing seriously. When I care about winning, I use SA2.
Ranks don’t go down if you haven’t noticed. Just play too damn much Ranked Match only and get bajillion points and still suck, like biggie.
IIRC EvilRyu didn’t have the A/S/SS rank either on Xbox Huge, 2005-2009. Stuck in B rank forever, like me!
Maybe Japanese Urien/Makoto games were better on that version(to see how you’re getting beat up or whats even going on: dash throw), but I guess you would probably never see Makoto back then. That’s based on I played nankobo tenkai last night, who I think was #1 in that version and I got to get beat up by his Urien which I never played before. Anyway we never have to discuss those guys since they’re not around here, looking to get better, are in Japan and are playing online across the ocean, whatever.
There was a story on biggiesmllz came out to play offline though, SF25th Tournament New York. You guys should have beat him up harder so he stops flooding the game server uploads with his S Rank wins. I think he gave a thumbs down to the surewin one. But if I don’t see them, then nobody probably sees them either so its my turn to shutup about any of that.
nankobo tenkai! I like that guy. there’s another Japanese fellow I like but I can’t remember his name. he’s a Yang player and I found out he speaks english when I sent him a gg once.
wish I could remember his name. Halberdius told me once about this mystery Yang player “he moves too fast” and I was like “yeah he’s really good” and he was like “no I mean his Yang is actually moving literally faster than Yang is supposed to move.”
maybe that’s one of the many Japanese secrets that keeps them steps ahead of us.
That’s awesome. I’ll have to check out the sound clips on the emulator (don’t think I’ve ever done that)
I don’t know how strong daigo was for his time, at the time. not to discredit him but I think I’ve seen more clips of him losing than winning but that could just be coincidence. like the year he won sbo, nuki beat everyone (daigo didn’t have to play) except for the last game where daigo beat ko. that same year at a sbo qualifier RX beat ume-nuki team. the famous kokujin quote “it’s not that kind of game” (not that funny when translated and out of context lol) was from a match where kokujin beat daigo. I remember one of the coop cups (first one I saw, it was amazing) daigo teamed with Deshiken, boss, etc but didn’t play a single game but won the tournament.
I remember seeing a sbo or xmania portfolio picture where they had a section on nitto. They wrote “the player that made daigo quit 3rd strike”. I don’t know if its fact or some kind of joke. Wether it’s true or not, daigo supposedly quit fighting games to pursue mahjong.
not saying he was a push over, but I don’t think he was as much of a dominant force in 3s like he was in ST, SF4, vampire series, etc.
Please make the unused sounds in to a youtube video (:
I disagree about Daigo, i think when he played he was god level. Sure i saw the video of him losing against Kokujin but i’ve also seen videos of him beating KO, Nuki etc.
I guess if i only saw those videos where Nuki and KO lost to other gods or played in god like teams where didnt they didnt get to play then maybe i’d think KO and Nuki were not god level
I’ll be honest, I didn’t think MOV was at god level until way later into my 3rd strike. I still, to this day, do not think of much Rikimaru’s play. And I can’t tell BAS and Boss apart.
Daigo was a “top player” during his prime. Obviously not the best nor the most dedicated, but he was up there with Boss, Nuki, KO and so on. It’s a shame that he quit around the time when 3S was really starting to evolve into a different game than before, because it would be interesting to see if he could manage to adapt like Nuki did.
I’d be interested in hearing more about this if you’re willing! I miss a lot of historical context having come so late. How was it before and what evolution do you mean?
Daigo’s always been the type of player to pick up a game quickly and get really good from there. Vampire Savior, Alpha 3, Super Turbo, 3rd Strike, Guilty Gear, Street Fighter 4, even in Marvel 3 he’s gotten farther in Evo than he should have with only a few months of practice. Watch him play against Hsien Chang in the USvJP 5v5 3rd Strike, which was in like 2000-2001 or so. Izu won SBO1 by OCVing both KO and Spellmaster J’s team in the Top 4. Daigo killed him easily during a random set(you can find this on youtube I think). Evo2003 has him going even with Nuki and KO(ironically he would ALMOST lose to Ricky Ortiz, who was sent to Losers by KSK dominating him), while Evo2004 he would again go toe to toe against KO. I bring up KO a lot because he was considered the best player in the world at the time, so if you can manage to somehow do well against him you’re considered really good.
If I remember correctly, Daigo reportedly stopped playing around 2005-2006, which is when 3S started to really evolve. It’s hard to explain without going into pointless details, but it’s like comparing 2005 to 2008 3S. The difference is subtle but there. I guess the game just got more aggressive during this time, especially Chun-Li and Dudley. Compare that to Daigo, where he plays at a very controlled pace and spills his spaghetti when things don’t go his way. But maybe this is also because he took a lengthy hiatus and was going through a blank so he was playing much safer than usual. That’s how it was when he lost to Alex Valle during Evo2006(fun fact: Nitto won this tournament, he beat Issei who took Nuki down in a very big upset…but yknow YUN-YUN-CHUN TOP 3 BROKEN GAME).
But yeah, 3rd Strike was never his main game, just the one he was the most notorious at because of the Justin parry, so it’s hard to say whether he would’ve wanted to evolve with the game or not since he dropped Guilty Gear around this time too. It would have been cool to see him keep at it though. His playstyle was pretty bland in comparison to other Kens like Deshiken, but he’d pull a hat trick or two that’d make people go whoaaafd;afjdu.
Do people not remember the time around 05-07 when Americans (namely FFA players) considered Daigo to be the best 3rd strike player in the world hands down? Not because of the Daigo parry video or because of his technical abilities / game knowledge (he was never super technical and doesn’t even know a lot about 3s), but because of his “psychic” dominance over pretty much everyone? I certainly remember that because that’s when I first started playing this game and all the best players used to ride his dick like mad.
I even remember a while after that, towards the tail end of the Gamer’s Vision Ranking Battles, Japan released a tier list of top players where everyone was ranked numerically. Kuroda wasn’t near the top at that point because he was still a Q player exclusively, but you had guys like Boss Nuki and K.O at the very top with numbered rankings, and then they ranked Daigo “X” for variable. I thought that was sick. Anyone know where I could find that list?
I was a Daigo nerd. Daigo still is pretty tops. He doesn’t play the game, he plays the next game and that is still something he does better than anyone else. Really sick shit. His catches are some of the best too. Like, geneii jin trades with shippu, no ones does them better. Trades in general, no one does them better. Nuki has Chun.
Yeah, that was the thing about Daigo that made him sick: he did some stupid shit but made a lot of them work. Catching pokes with HP Shoryu xx Shippu(see Mester vs Daigo on Youtube, I forget which set), it was nuts.
Bitter netcode-related rant:
So, I find myself playing KOF 13 on Steam. And despite the issues I had with it (mostly HD mode, EX moves, and some other choices that significantly dumb the game down and make it not like the other KOF games) I’m having fun. Will this be something I’ll be playing at tournaments? Probably not. I’m not going to take it too seriously but at the same time it’s fun to play and reminds me of years ago where I would just play any SNK/Capcom fighter on MAME and have fun with it. But, the big thing I’m enjoying is the netcode. It’s very good netcode. Again it’s delay-based but it’s very playable and 3-4 bar connections are like offline. What’s more is that I’m playing dudes who know what they’re doing and having fun, getting salty against Benimaru and Mr. Karate, but actually learning the game. The matchmaking is a little shit but that’s why we have the ability to add friends on Steam and easily communicate with them.
The thing that pisses me off is that this is what I wanted from 3SOE. Just a good, reliable online experience where it’s simple to play dudes who know what they’re doing, easily communicate with them and learn the game.
I mean, this is fucking sad guys. SNKP managed to put together a pretty damn good port that has improved netcode. A company that is barely alive, hasn’t released a new product in over 2 years (not counting Pachislot) and had the reputation for providing the worst fighting game netcode of all the major developers. Just one-upped Capcom and Iron Galaxy.
Think about that.
No, dude but what about parry?
Ryo has parries…
IMO expecting top notch online play for 3s is unrealistic considering how specific timing situations can get. If 3s released with the exact same net code as kof 13 steam everyone would call it unplayable.
We’ll see when the OE patch comes I guess, but I bet even the netcode that people praised for mvc:o and vsav won’t be what people want.
I’m not saying the netcode had to be gdlk but playable. I mean, if I’m playing online and after I knock you down and I do meaty that has 2 frames of hitstun and I’m getting thrown out of it there’s a problem here. What I meant to highlight was that we missed out in comparison to what other communities got with their games.
