Gen Shenanigans Thread!

I wish there was some kinda of meaty crossup setup for LP Zan’ei, as it probably wouldn’t be beaten by backdash.

Added Rufus, Cammy, and Rose to the oga cross-up list with HK gekiro.

Neat.

On Sagat + Seth: bnb>hk gekiro> whiff crane c.hp> mk oga cross-up.
On Cody + Zangief + Cammy: bnb> hk gekiro> whiff crane c.hp> lk oga cross-up.

So you guys know how crane c.mk can duck under fireballs and counter Guys elbow drop right? I was messing with this for awhile in training mode but crane c.mk appears to be useful to evade a bunch of jump ins aswell. I tested it with Ryu jumping in on me with j.hk>whatever follow up and depending on Gens position during the jump in he either completely ducked under and could throw Ryu, or the crane c.mk hit Ryu.

So then I thought…how about Akuma’s demon flip ‘vortex’ and tested that. Crane c.mk beats neutral demon flip (the slide) and the demon flip palm strike, basically 2 out 4 options Akuma has. It’s kind of interesting and I think c.mk warrants more labwork.

It goes under shotos’ j.HP too, which is a very powerful normal that can hit Gen out of his mantis cr.MK. Not counting the dive kick type moves, the only jump-ins that crane cr.MK cannot duck are Vega’s j.HP and j.HK.

Let’s not forget Adon’s air jaguar kick; time it right and it hits him out of the air. Same goes for LK/MK ground jaguar kick. I’m sure it works against HK as well, but timing seems to differ from the other versions.

I use it also against Vega’s wall jump and Viper’s burn kicks… ah, I was forgetting! If meaty, against Rufus makes so that you get hit only by the first part of Ex Messiah Kick… which means he’ll flip above your head, totally open for an attack

wow

Yeah I’ve been using it against Viper aswell, works great. It’s a interesting normal though, I mean looking at the framedata it’s just horrible but it’s usage isn’t in the numbers, but the hitbox/hurtbox, heh.

Or trade. crane st.MK and cr.MK, on trade, lets you follow-up with almost any normal unless you trade with a fierce/roundhouse attack or a move like Fei’s close st.MP which deals massive hitstun.

Tons of jump ins can hit Gen out of crane c.MK, I’d bet there are very few (if any) characters that can’t hit it at all. Even Ryu’s j.HP works, it can easily beat Gen in startup and even during active frames sometimes. I know you’re actually pretty good in the lab, so I don’t know why your results are off. Maybe you did the jump in attack too early? Most jumping hard attacks don’t have a lot of active frames, so if you time something to hit Gen in the head then they’re probably passed their active frames by the time they’re low enough that they would be able to hit Gen’s crane c.MK.

There’s no reason to use this as a regular AA considering Gen’s real AAs are pretty amazing. It’s more interesting as a dodge.

I use it as a meaty attack canclled into FADC, trololol.
And it works!
Depending on my opponents wakeup options.

It is very possible that I did the attack too early. I’ll test it again, TY.

EDIT:  Yea, it seems like either my timing was off, or spacing was off. Ryu’s j.HP can hit Gen out of crane cr.MK for sure for the most part, including some of active frames as well. I think the only time he cannot hit is when Gen ducks enough to hit Ryu with the last active frame when he lands. TYVM yeb for the correction. Proves that I’m still new-ish with the labs and stuff.

Disclaimer: Take what I say with a pinch of salt, for all anti airing needs here is what I use in order of importance

All other are not just in my book. because I have so many options already. lol

How is this related to shenanigans and or tricks except for the cross-under?

Anyway crane c.mk makes the Viper match-up a lot easier. I love how Viper players are always looking for that cheap corner burnkick straight into ultra on corner wake-up. Just press dat crane c.mk. Didn’t know that about Rufus Schiff, do you just randomly use c.mk then and hope he uses ex messiah on his wake-up or what? I’m having a hard time seeing practical use for it.

well, yes, I use it as bait. We know Rufus players consider (rather correctly) Ex Messiah as a free escape and you can bet that if pressured, most Rufus will use it. If Rufus blocks, Gen is still safe.
Anyway I checked the info on the Japanese mook book: Crane cr.mk is +1 on hit and just -1 on block. 8 frames startup (urgh), 3 active frames, 21 ending frames. In the space above Gen’s head, frames from 1 to 25 are 100% invincible to any fireball.

Edited: thanks, Street11

Afraid not. That kanji does not mean jump-in: it means projectile invincibility.

Lol, ok, I’m totally brainless these days. I hope it’s just the exams and not my brain ageing :-p the label shortened the Japanese for fireball with just the kanji of 飛ぶ, which is jumping/flying. So sorry, forgive me pals, I’ll edit my previous post…

np man. I can see why you got confused, which is the reason I specifically stated “That kanji”.

i wish i knew japanese

Yep. You guys are impressive. It’s probably hard to get any cooler than playing Gen AND being able to read Japanese. (Okay, maybe if you can also read Mandarin.)
