I think Ibuki matchup is about even, whoever gets knocked has a big problem to overcome, and I don’t think she has better options to beat us on neutral game.
Actually, Gen has more things going for his defence than Ibuki. Ultra 1 does give her something to fight against, but we can run our mixups just fine.
Also, I honestly don’t think Gen loses to Ryu. It’s just a boring game of attrition, You need to make them throw stupid fireballs so you can focus them, get the U2. And then it’s a simple game of footsies. Defend the airspace, Respect cr.MK fireball (EX!) and punish him to hell with U2.
Although I really feel that Gen can’t do a lot of his flashy shit to Ryu (Online anyway…)
I love this character so much. None of you understand, he is so damn rewarding to learn, More than anyone else I’ve ever played.
I think I’m fully grasping the sheer power of Oga against people that don’t know how to defend against it. I’m winning games I do not deserve to win by doing unblockables and crossup Oga constantly.
However, I really should stop using it so much. At a higher level I can see myself getting blown up so hard by it.
Oga cross-ups and such tricks are best saved for moments when you really need to use them and after good consideration. His shenanigans compliment his solid footsies and combos, not the other way around, as tempting as it sometimes may be.
And yes, he is very rewarding. Nothing beats beating a good chunli at her own poking game.
The only matchups I find are hell are Guile, Deejay, Makoto, and Juri. Guile and Deejay for the obvious reasons.
Makoto does so much damage and stun which, in combination with Gen’s low health/stun makes it easy for them to get a couple good reads, get stunned and basically lose. Aside from that. her st.mp is real hard to deal with; basically can only ex gek through it, and her dp up punch beats all jumps convincingly.
Juri because she has good zoning that is hard to deal with, you can’t really U2 it easily because it’s hard to tell whether she’s charging or shooting a fireball on reaction, and even if it is a fireball it recovers quickly. Her frametraps up close are tough and often leaves you at the distance where even if you read the frametrap and ex gek, you’ll be too far to hit, whiff and get knocked the fuck out.
Anyways, as a quick aside, there’s nothing wrong with doing cr.mp xx mp hands instead of hp hands, is there? Maybe it’s my nature as a classical guitarist/bassist but my index/middle fingers are very agile and I do the motion of mp,lp,mp,lp,mp. I get it 100% of the time but I have to focus a lot to do the hp. one. I mean, it does the same damage so myeh.
I’ll be playing at one of our regular ‘fight night’ streaming events today, so i’ll post all those videos when I get them.
Hate to double post but this is one of the things i’ve been discussing a lot with people. It’s something that I’ve noticed with typically newer players (no offense) that have a good idea of how to play the game, but they always assume too much of their opponent. Like “i’m not gonna jump cause he’s gonna anti-air me every time” or “he knows how to punish everything this does” etc.
The thing is, fuck that, don’t give anyone respect until they PROVE they can do it. That’s why you always hear commentators say “pros often lose their first match cause it’s the ‘download’ match, to see where their capabilities are, etc.” So I mean, if I’m playing Gen and they can’t block/punish Ogas or trying to do something dumb like focus absorb it, something that proves they don’t know the matchup then i’ll abuse it. Same with jumping, if they’re not anti-airing, then keep hopping in.
It’s like playing online, you always see it, players who think they’re good and complain “you’re mashing through a string” or “you jump so much” but still lose. Like yeah, if I see you’re doing the same auto-pilot frame trap then i’m just gonna reversal that hoe. If you don’t anti-air (to be fair, anti-airing online is a joke) then i’m gonna keep doing it. If you were smart, you’d just drop your hitconfirms/blockstrings to block a reversal and punish, which you can do to beat about 95% of people who always mash through strings, but you didn’t.
Met an amazing Dhalsim player and Rose player today and played the Sim FT10, and I lost 7-10.
I think the Sim match-up is fairly even for the most part. Our pokes can counterhit most of Sims long pokes easily so I always make sure to press mantis s.mp a lot during this match. Our two different jumparcs seem to confuse a lot of Sim players and mess up their spacing/yoga flame timing. J.mk crane makes sure Sim cannot use his annoying ass slides to go under cross-ups and once you get in, you’re in. As long as you keep your patience gen should be fine, just don’t get too frustrated and play the poking game, do a random gekiro if you think he will do s.hp and if it hits you’ll have a knockdown allowing you to close in etc. Random teleports are free to punish as everyone knows by pressing literally any button. Oh and watch out for his j.hp overhead, that shit is mad annoying and it keeps hitting me because I forget about the fact it will act as an overhead. Anyway U1 is godlike in this match-up, when you have it (aswell as super ofcourse) Sim cannot do his j.hp bullshit (even on hit you can punish it with super or U1) and teleports are also a free punish.
5-5 imo
Now Rose is a whole different story. Her pokes can beat Gens a lot of the time + soul spiral is mad annoying, especially ex which will beat pretty much anything Gen can do. Also fuck her backdash, and her random ex spirals, oh and her U2 which basically gives her full momentum anytime Gen gets in to do some shit. I hate this match-up with a passion, so fucking much.
All Ryu cross up oga works on him too
Back throw instant medium oga cross up
If you HK oga towards him on the startup of his yoga fire it will hit as cross up
One thing I’m not 100% sure about Sim matchup is which ultra is better. Ultra 2 shuts down projectiles (Awesome!), Ultra 1is free against instant overhead (Great), is good against teleport/backdash, and does the justice combo from Super (but he is one of the fuckers I like to spend my meters of FADC all day).
But yeah completely agree, fair 5-5 (sometimes I die quickly, others I kill just as fast)
For Rose hm yeah Soul Spirals are gay…but I kinda think it’s the only good thing she has against Gen.
against Rose, it’s funny when they activate Ultra 2 and start walking towards you… and you react with a short Ex Jyasen. I used this trick many times and the Rose players were like “what?! how?!”
Funny how he beat Daigo’s Yun and Guile convincingly, but actually ended up on the losing side of the confront against Ryu (IIRC). Daigo must have felt bad about trying to counter pick him haha.
I wonder why Xian just didn’t chose ultra 2 there, helps so much… to shut down fireballs sounds more important than sweeps. Maybe he just wanted those crossups wih ogas into full damage.
Again, amazing display of Gen power right there. Stop with this mid tier talk guys, old man is pure sfiv bullshit lolol.
I asked him on stream to pick it just for shits and giggles but he never does it. He said he prefers U1 in every matchup because he thinks it’s more viable. I guess we gotta respect him for sticking to solid play with u1.
