Gen General Discussion Thread: Theory Fighter!

Wow really? Some guy said Justin Wong said on stream, “Who is that Gen bodying Marlinpie.”

I thought he was just messing with me, but we were on station 1 and justin was right behind me ;0

Yep, that actually happened!

trying to get a list of useful match ups/punishes for U2 usage. starting to find some practical stuff outside of fireballs and random/reads

like it punishes

fei’s second rekka on block every time.
oni’s f+fp from inside max distance
seth stretch arms, fireball, tanden, missed spd, and he spends a lot of time in the air
hold up back on blocked rufus messiah, punishes follow ups

dont like it vs sagat suprisingly

anybody got more?

Mike: you mean the air dive ultra?

i mean as a set, either one. anything useful as far as garaunteed damage, non random usage situations

so there was a gen on stream at FR 13 fighting floe

and he almost won. except he couldnt do hands or finish combos.

then he still almost won, and had floe down to chips + a hard knockdown in the corner. he did meaty normal giekro which of course got beat out by ex messiah.

floe immediately ran it all the way back

why the hell didnt he do meaty overhead oga

Tournament nerves?

Here it is. Watching your play I get the impression that you’re fixed on wall-far-Oga.
Examples are 0:25, 0:48, 2:49, 4:08 and 7:07.
I think the first three times a wall-down-Oga (not a ceiling-down-Oga) would have hit her.
Same goes for 4:08 but you actually did hit with far, too. At 7:07 you were lucky he didn’t just jump punch, because that is what happens to me all the time when I Oga towards an receding opponent.
I’m also surprised he didn’t easily stuff your far-Ogas with Cannon Spikes. Also something that happens to me when doing far-Oga against online Cammys.

Actually, the setups for Cammy is backthrow, and sweep at range where your sweep connects past the edge of your pants.
(Using mk oga)

Regardless of spacing, if you dont land the correct setup, you can mix your opponent up by using Hk oga and baiting a reversal.
There is not much use to this because you gain no damage or positioning, but you do mess with your opponents head.

One thing people dont realise is if they block the crossup oga correctly, Gen will still pass through their damage box instead of stopping on them, making him very difficult to punish, which never happened.

In the first round I landed two crossup ogas in a row on purpose, I wanted Marlin to respect it, and keep far away, which lets me use my cr.fierce and sweep much more often.
A good Cammy wants to be close, so she can work her frame traps.

This is a reply to a post a while back, but as far as Crane U1 versus Mantis U1 as an anti-air, they both have the same startup (11f), the biggest difference is whether or not you think you’re opponent will touch the ground before it goes active. SO…if you’ve got good reactions and you think that your opponent won’t touch the ground before Ultra goes active, then go for crane U1, but if you think they’ll touch the ground, then use Mantis U1. Generally, Mantis U1 has a bigger window of opportunity: however much time they have in the air + their 2 vulnerable landing frames if they touched a button (empty jump can block as soon as they touch the ground). Crane easily has much more range faster than U1 and the invincibility isn’t as shoddy IMO, so that too may play into your decision.

and on the topic of super, if you’re doing a set, use it as early as possible to punish something seemingly impossible, e.g. hk.crane super can punish a jump from about 3/4 screen. Then the next time you get it, don’t use it unless it’ll end the match, since once you use it, you lose the scare factor, there’s nothing for them to be afraid of as far as super is concerned…

People still play SF4?

I just did. A friend of mine only had SF4 at home. I lent my AE to another friend.
At least you have FAs, Ultras, Supers …and Gen. If he’s already unlocked. >>

Who all is making it at to EVO this year?

There’s a chance I might go to pot monster it up, but I want some of my really talented Gen brothers to shine.

I did crossup crane mk > crane cr.lk > (miss)sweep > jumpin mantis mk (crossed up) > cr.lk mantis in front

I crossed up blanka but ended up in front.

Anyone else wanna test this?
Matchup knowledge.

I did cr.lk (blocked) cr.hk (blocked) and then lk.oga and crossed up twice in a row versus akuma tonight… midscreen.

depending on if akuma stays there like a dummy yah?

depending on if akuma stays there like a dummy yah?

I’ve been playing around with Gen more, and this is what I got:

Crane j.HK is one of the dirtiest cross-ups in the game provided you can space it. I’d say it’s on par with Ibuki’s j.MK in difficulty of making it cross up and is better than shoto j.HP and Fei Long’s j.MP (that shit’s dirty as f***) in difficulty of identifying whether it crosses up or not.

Yes it whiffs on reversal timing crouching attacks, but j.MK beats those out, so it’s easy to condition them not to do it. I recommend everyone to learn this.

Only one hit right? The second kick will wiff.

Yea. The 2nd hit will whiff. Always whiff it tho since if it’s not a cross-up you’ll hit twice obviously.
