I mainly don’t but if I see that they are setting up a run stop ultra, I’ll jump forward so I’m over them and they will go under. I always watch my distances vs their ultra. Sometimes I bait it out so I’ll land before they reach me and ultra them.
having some new love hate moments with gen.
realized im not going to beat any top level players consistently unless i can knock down the 1 framer 99% of the time. i can skate by on xbl with maybe 75%, but im losing a lot of close matches due to combo drops.
ah well 100x a day till i get it up there
Mike do you use a stick? If you do, try lifting your fingers differently. Might help. Um if you don’t know what I mean. Let’s say you are pressing c.Jab, c.Jab, c.Jab just as an example. After you press your attack and lift your finger to press it again, some people press down lift up but not lift off the button then press down again. Another way is to lift it straight up off the top of the button and bring it down to press it again. I myself flick the button. Meaning when I’m above my button (few inches) my finger is straight out, pointing away from me. When I try and strike the button, I curl my finger so it’s pointed at me.
Here I made a video. of what I mean. Maybe try changing up the way you strike your buttons it will help with your timing.

I got WRECKED by Jozhear in SF4 grand finals in the Edmonton tourney. He took 6 rounds, finishing the last one with a damn perfect. I was able to take only 2 rounds off. I mainly blame my lack of skill, and I partially blame laggy tv for dropping my 1f bnb several times (cuz I STILL couldn’t get it on rhythm; it’s probably the biggest difference between Jozhear and me because he got the combo even with that latency) and the fact that it was at the place called Animethon (I got mindfucked by accidentally going into the vendor room b4 the tourney).
He analyzed the video and apparently decided he will not jump one single time. My jumping in with crane fierce got outranged by his air throw lots of times (and I was sure I did it early enough).
I think it’s time I change my strategy again.
One thing I felt good in that tourney (SF4 part) was that I took 4 rounds straight from a great Chun-li player whom I always got bodied by.
thanks, i’ll try that. i know its mostly because ive gotten lazy about practicing execution tho.
congrats. it definately didnt help that you just played that long ass set against him. thats not really the point tho unless you really needed the money. now you can look back on your loss, and readjust. so in the end you’ll get better because of it.
He also has played me a bunch. I beat him the last time we played. I should’ve posted that video sooner. Just adding my logo to it now before I upload it.
Good job though.
Personally I find characters that have slower links can hit their links with TV lag. Example is Vega… Gen’s are usually quicker. Unless you are linking after s.MP. But I play at a local place and I have no idea if it’s the store or tvs (cuz I brought a tv there that I play with and it felt laggy there) but when I play it’s laggy there. I think they have dirty power. When I play gen I drop my links. when I play rose, I hit them. c.LP, c.LK, c.MP, is a very slow link.
Because of all that, I started to get better at AA’ing and Footsies. Mainly because I was relying on combos too much. Sure they look great and do decent damage, but keeping someone out with AA and pokes is way more important IMO.
Thanks for the encouragement guys. I see this as an opportunity to further improve myself.
I think I found one interesting fact against Chun/Vega/Bison:
They are mostly unrivaled in footsie games, and good players are confident they will not lose this one. Therefore, they are more susceptible to getting mindfucked simply by outpoking them several times (and Gen is definitely capable of doing this), and it will make them jump more than they usually do. None of them are capable of changing jump arc in the air.
When I fought against Jozhear this time, I just started with a jump rather than outpoking him, unlike I did in the previous sets. I feel that is the biggest reason he was able to keep his composure.
In contrast, I outfootsied the Chun player with focus and mixing up early mantis cr.MP and cr.HP giving them a hard time whiff punishing, and it caused him to jump a lot. I didnt miss a single AA, and I believe this is the reason I beat him this time.
Yea so it’s basically what messiah said. Footsies and AA
The one main thing that sucks about these characters is it’s hard to focus their normals to get in closer. You’ll either eat another normal or a special. Or Someone like Bison or Adon they use their specials to gain distance and they come out really fast so you can’t always DP them on reaction and with Gen his is a tad slow so it will get CH.
I watch to see if they use them to gain distance right in front of me or at arms length. If they do I c.HP. I always try to take any opening they give me to deal damage.
I’m actually thinking about researching each character and finding out common non-true block stun combos that people tend to use. Example Gen: c.Jab, c.Short, s.Strong. Not a true block string. Same with Ryu and his c.Forward, Hadouken if it’s too far away (well known situation). I mean in most cases when you play solid players they won’t do that, but if you pick up that they are trying it and you don’t punish it at first, at least you know they might try it again as they might think you don’t know you can punish it.
Chun-Li also has one, c.Jab, c.Jab, s.Jab, s.Fierce.
so was losing to an oni at a local gathering yesterday. made me do some homework
his forward fierce is -9 on block, and the only time you cant punish with sweep or something is max range. but it has an ass load of recovery so its easy to make whiff and punish from there.
you can reaction dp any of the slashes that would normally cross up, just by watching for the start up. or you can neutral jump or jump back and get a full combo. if its a light slash, or fireball after the cancelled normal he has you in a true block string
if you block the light slash, he’s at -2. reversal hands knocks anything out except follow up DP. the guy i was playing was following with the jump smash looking shit. hands knocks that out of start up too.
hk giekro is actually useful as an AA against air float gimmicks
not sure how well Mantis U1 works against his Jump air back dash. But Teiga works well on it.
he wasnt spending enough time in the air or throwing enough fireballs for me to pick it, but good to know
Well maybe testing Mantis U1 on reaction to the air back dash is in order.
i’ll have to check it. wiki says he has at least 11 recovery frames for raw air dash, 10 if he cancels into a normal tatsu, 4 if ex , so should be do able
Wonder if that has landing frames in consideration.
yeh thats the landing frames
Does anyone here have experience with using Crane cr.LK? From what I’ve noticed it does have some unique properties, but overall it still feels like a pretty risky normal to throw around. Do you even use it?
Random crane cr.LK of greed when I have Super and Ultra.
I use it right outside of its range and it’s pretty meaty (6 active frames) so if someone presses a button and gets a CH, there goes 600 life.
it works well as stated by street11 above, for me I use it mostly after super reset and pray that it lands lol if it does that like700-800 damage lol! but when blocked damn
That’s almost exactly what I do, usually after a knockdown. I noticed that it’s pretty safe if you do it at the right distance, even if it was blocked, you would recover in time to block whatever comes at you after that. Not really tested on all characters though, but if it’s really safe then the only way to beat it would be random wake-up EX/SRK reversal moves right?
hit confirm into crane cr.LK from st.LP or even Mantis st.MP
