Gen General Discussion Thread: Theory Fighter!

learn gen bnb once gen bnb then u can play solid footie and if want his oga cross up etc hardly part is linking sthp for tc2 man i fianlly sorta and realise my gen got lot better at footie and i add way more pressure it not master it like 80-95 rate but only in training mode acrade but soon i will go ranked .the real fun start when u can do gen bnb consistency

Has anyone tried using the parry glitch to get out of knockdown pressure, ambiguous crossups in particular? I’m thinking it shouldn’t be impossible to learn to do it consistently.

I think that normally, you have to be frame perfect to focus attack a wakeup crossup, since focus attacks don’t count as reversals, right? But Gen’s 1 frame of additional invinvibility on neutral stick when waking up should make that a 2 frame window. Going into the parry, you’d have 5 frames of recovery, and I believe most air attacks have 4 frames of recovery - so you’d be -1 at worst on frame perfect safe jumps. On an empty jump, I think you’d be -2 at worst. Seems like it should work - in theory. Anyone tried it in practice?

working on some corner 50/50s from forward throw.

took the idea from fei. magos fei to be exact. anyway with fei you can forward throw into the corner, wiff a normal, then jump forward with mp. it looks like it should be a cross up. the mp actually gets behind the opponent, and fei actually lands behind the opponent, but you have to block it on the front side as if it were a neutral jump, and completely ignore what your eyes say

im working something simialar, and i have it working on ryu so far.

set up is forward throw into corner
dash,
whiff mantis cr.mp
jump forward crane mk

dosent feel like it has to be frame perfect or anything. anyway lands behind opponent and all that, but has to be blocked front side. will list more characters as tested

the 50/50 part of it is that if you jump with mantis mk it actually does cross up

EDIT-testing both corners. works on-

ryu, ken, makoto*, sakura*, akuma, gen, dan, oni,
yun, chun, sim, viper, bison, cody, hakan, yang
e.ryu, guile, gief

  • -no visual cross up action in left corner

Try it with crane j.hk too.

will do

EDIT-that actually produces some really interesting results. completely new testing area.

les

left corner is different than right corner just to remind you

good work

yeah, i tested both, and made note of which characters dont get the visual action. makoto and sakura both make you land in front of them in the left corner. works normally in the right corner.

im sure that there are setups that work from sweep in the corner too. i’ll test more tomorrow. if i can find enough set ups i’ll make a corner hard knockdown set up thread

on a related note, i took what enigmatic said, and tried some crane j.rh set ups. only tried the left corner. you end up landing completely front side on most of them even tho it looks like youre going to go behind. i’ll post more about that tomorrow as well

oh? What are the differences between the left and right corner? I thought they had the same properties.

basiclly the left corner dosent let certain attacks cross up like they would in the right corner

Ya there are some weird properties sometimes when it comes to left and right. I think it was back in Vanilla one of the Gekiro combos only worked one way if done
against Abel? Forget, but anyways. it’s best to just double check when you find stuff out. Extra work I know, but just incase you end up trying it in a tournament and it causes you to lose because it never worked in the first place on one side or the other…

Ok finally gathered enough courage to ask this… I’m not afraid to admit I am a terrible Gen. In fact I’m just terrible at this game in general, but Gen is a lot of fun to play with (though not the type the Oga’s all over the screen… so I’m probably still worth your time). I just want to know everyone’s opinion on this; how viable is a Gen that doesn’t do 1 frame links or FADC combos?

I have done it a few times actually, those 1 frame links. But success rate is about 20%. I’m also afraid to do it on shotos and pretty much anyone with a good reversal move. Ryu in particular, one SRK - FADC - Ultra and half your life is gone. Just feels like it’s not worth the risk. Even if I can practice enough to a 50% hit rate, there’s still a 50% chance of missing and getting mopped after.

You gotta believe!

Don’t give up! Gen may be able to get wins online without utilizing all of his tools, but his 1F stuff is mandatory if you ever wish to take down bigger bullies. While FADC stuff is important (Gaining better position on the screen, finishing the round, converting smk/cmp xx hands poke into damage followed by a safejump/mixup etc etc), that shit can wait. Just keep working on those 1F links. While it may take some extra time and patience, your success rate will improve.

This probably isn’t the type of reply you were looking for, but I’m just so goddamn bored I decided to faceroll something out. Sorry!

I know there’s a trick to it… so-called plinking, but hells it doesn’t even seem to make that much of a difference. With or without plinking I’m still at about 20% hit rate. I’m probably doing it wrong, but what is right? Plink the MP button 0.2664 seconds faster?

About the only time I FADC’d was after a roll combo to finish the match. Come version 2012, I think the only time I’ll FADC is for roll combo, and save most of it for super.

Plinking his c.lp to TC2 makes the window to hit twice as large, so it’s a large difference.

You might know this already, but in case you don’t, here’s a good way to see if you get the plink itself right. Go into practice mode and display your inputs. Do a plink of MP~HP and look at the input scroll list. If the list looks like this:
(MP) (HP)
(MP)
you did it right.

If it looks like this:
(MP) (HP)
you pressed MP too late, so both buttons came out as one input.

If it looks like this:
(HP)
(MP)
you pressed MP too soon, so MP will not be cancelled from HP.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, I figured that out myself, but I noticed that even if the imputs were correct, it may not always work. However it seems like I have made improvements since the last time I tried this technique. Somewhere down my time playing as Gen something must’ve helped lol. It’s an improvement but still awful, nowhere near 75%. Correct me if I’m wrong but even Gen elites are not guaranteed to get it 100% of the time am I right?

Dante Valmont (dunno if he still plays as often as he did), but the sets we did play together, there were very few if any 1f links and FADCs, just really, really, really solid footsies. He should still be top 10 on XBL.

Great, I really need to watch some of his matches then. Can’t find any recent videos aside from the 1 year old matches on youtube sadly.

thinking ultra 2 might be the ultra of choice against seth

he spends a lot of tme in the air. in addition to the standard fireball punishes, it gets you out of his super trap, and you can punish stand fierce stretch arms. also obvious big damage punish to tanden or spd

The super tra? I’ve been a bit behind on my viewing and we don’t have many Seth’s up here, what is the Super trap?

I really need to go back to reading all the character forums, if only for the knowledge I get out of stuff.

he throws a fireball and on your forward jump or forward dash activates super
