Gen General Discussion Thread: Theory Fighter!

Been there before. ive learned that quite a few gen players are aholes for no reason. its like they couldnt handle their character sucking and lost their mind. it sadly doesnt return after they switch

i dunno man. people need to drop their egos. we arent playing for cash, so what the hell are you so mad about

because of an online loss? and in this case an online win? wtf

sorry i didnt play my character, the way you want me too. next time send me your rule book before the match

WOW Gen in almost back to back matches. VC I assume that is Vanesco and Kane.

VC is azndude. Seth matchup is pretty scary, but he did pretty well.

I didn’t play any matches on stream, but I was the one who put Alex Valle into losers. Not bad for not playing AE for a month or two.

BTW, stockpile meter in the ryu matchup for lp+mp EX roll. You’ll thank me later. Match is a lot easier.

lol VC and azndude man someone is going all out with the labels  lol and this is coming from a round eye :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Quick rant.

Recently I’ve been seeing a couple Gen’s go for super/ultra crossups online, and I really hope it’s just for fun.

Obviously stupid gimmicks like that won’t take you far, and I don’t have much respect to those who rely on it heavily. I say it’s stupid because you’re banking a lot on it, missing it or it being blocked results in a monstrous punish, definitely not worth it at all, especially putting time into it instead of fundamentals. Actually I’m pretty sure none of you guys heavily rely on gimmicks like that, if so, I’ll play anyone a first to 5 for hella moneys just to prove how ineffective it is.I’m also pretty sure the people who’ve stuck with Gen since Vanilla will agree with me on this.

I think I’m starting to see why people are saying Gen is a “gimmicky” character; 80% of the Gen’s I’ve played so far, aren’t really that good. Mainly the ones online (yes I know it’s just online), many of them rely on walldive gimmicks, whiffing walldive > dp, random hands, super reset crossup ultra, etc., no fundamentals whatsoever, that being said, that’s how the community sees it. That’s why the majority of the community goes “oh wth, Gen has good ground game/anti-airs/mixups”, because they’re always so used to seeing stupid gimmicks.

Anyway, just want to point that out. It could be a meta game; they could expect a to play a gimmicky Gen, when the Gen is very well balanced and has good fundamentals.

I only do them online for show. I’d never do them in a tournament. maybe if it’s a last and only ditch effort but it would still be a long shot before I’d do it outside of online.

Whether online or not, if I’d rather have some guessing game fun than win, I will do them without any hesitation. No offense but that’s just who I am, and right now about 50% of my fun in the game comes from those gimmicks. I know I wasn’t like that in vanilla, but my competitive spirit started to diminish.

Oh no, don’t get me wrong, if you’re just having fun, then by all means do so, I mean I do it too to mess around too. I’m just talking about people who heavily rely on it.

The real problem is that I usually place Top 3 in our local ranbats (our local scene has great players but they sometime fall for stuffs they havent seen for quite a while) and some ppl DO see him as a gimmicky character as a result, so I have to tell them what I think: that his main game is in mid-range footsie, which is not very convincing.

I might change this opinion tho, because the next ranbat is when I’ll be touching 2012 for the first time, and I am rly excited to show Gen’s real strength.

I only go for gimmicks when I panick lol! pls take it easy on the newbies, like 80% of the players we have little knowledge of fundamentals (as seen from my video with a dudley)
I must admit when it comes to footsies I suck balls lol. anyway its all in the learning

There are many players but few masters. it is well nubbb it is well…

and by the way I am slowly inputting the up/down mixups you talked about and somehow I sense when to pull it off and for the most part it has been successful (from max ranges lol) and I cant believe I am getting used to the bnb you suggested. I am still looking forward for you to put up a Gen footsie tutoria or something. THANK YOU!!!

There’s a lot of decent video material spread all over the place. But if you can’t find it, never be afraid to experiment yourself. It’s a part of the necessary free play in training mode. You keep the game fun by discovering new things or proving things you already know, like in a regular training regimen.

Rant about online & throwing away the disc.

Spoiler

Online makes me desperate. Haven’t had a stable/good connection in 3 weeks. There’s no scene in my area to help leveling up against human players and I don’t have the cash to travel for the next 2 months. It helped in my decision to throw away the disc. Around this time I used the gimmicks I didn’t want to use, resulting in unsatisfying gameplay.

I still visit ranbats and tournaments in Europe, and try to level up during the ranbats. If that doesn’t work out well, I’ll have to quit this very fun, but sadly time consuming hobby. School comes first, and that’s worth hell of a lot more.

But really, experiment. Don’t just learn BnB’s and ranges, but learn everything there is about your character. All possible counters, all possible mind games. And last but not least: all possible gimmicks. You’ll never know when they come in handy, as long as you weigh risk/reward.

TL;DR quit online. If you’re not already doing this, learn the fundamentals first and gimmicks later, enter tournaments to play solid, win and make 2012 Gen epic for me. Thanks.

spoilers come with square brakets.

I can contest to that. If a match is too laggy and my AA attempts seem useless or my combos aren’t coming out. I’ll end up trying oga garbage.

usually if its laggy i stop trying. i’ll throw the rest of the match if i notice more than 2 good spikes

cant learn anything from that

I never play online unless I’m drunk or someone wants to run a ft5 set. You gotta find/make a community of players looking to improve to level up.

Yes I am VC, but it doesnt stand for viet cong, the letters are my initials. The thing is that I was at tonys house right before the tournament for casuals, actually me and kane were both there, and played for a few hours. So when I watched the stream and heard James chen say that tony might not know the match up I laughed my ass off cause we were watching gen play all day lol. (watched a vid of yeb)

There was a situation in the match when tony jumped at me and I could have used crane super. It was frustrating because I was telling myself to use crane super and when he actually jumped I didnt react in time. Man that was my chance, imagine if gen beat online tony on the stream haha. I beat a few more people, but in the end I was eliminated by a ryu at the same time Van was playing Valle so I didnt catch the match unfortunately.

Vanesco I’m down for a ft5 with you and to train. Are you on PSN?

I added you nubbb, but its still pending.

Does Gen have any safe jumps that don’t get beat out by 3Frame SRKs? That isn’t a empty jump. Maybe I missed it but I can’t seem to find one. Is there anything like Ryu’s Forward Throw, step back, j.MK?

I tried something like:

Forward throw, dash once, Mantis c.Jab, fj.HP. It doesn’t force them into block stun it just misses. Is this really a safe jump? I always assumed that a safe jump means when you do your jump attack it will either hit them or force them into block stun, or if they have a move that has start up invincibility they will pass through each other but Gen will recover in time to block it.

I believe, after fwd. throw, [c] lp jyasen, fwd j.MK is a safe jump set up, isn’t it? And off back throw, it’s just [c] fwd j.MK. That’s what’s listed. Unless something has changed (Stupid PC only! :(), the SRK will simply get crossed up and you’ll be safe, otherwise, they block/get hit by crane j.MK.

ya i do the roll a lot. I was wondering about dash
