Gen General Discussion Thread: Theory Fighter!

After spending some more time in the lab and doing some more reading I took it online again and ended up getting the first draw game I’ve ever seen in sf4… LOL at least I didn’t lose. After some goofing around with oga in that match, I think I will try to stick to Gen since he does seem pretty fun.

I thought that was the Cammy section?

Not that this is a huge deal, but I made top 8 in losers at a local tournament this weekend. Rhyllis is in Winners. I don’t know what place Slowstep made it. but there were three gens this weekend. I’ll let you know how I place tomorrow. I was put into losers by a really solid rog, whom happens to be one of my worst match-ups. Especially if he’s really rush down like this one. He does crazy frame traps and does the shuffle if he gets you in the corner baiting you to press something. I had to play a match after that to get into losers top 8. I’m pretty happy with my over-all performance besides the Rog match. I was getting a bit pissed cuz my hands started to get clammy and I couldn’t get s.MK hands out a few times. But I only lost 2 rounds out of 5 matches. Not bad imo when all guys but one are actually pretty solid players. So though this isn’t Evo or a major, wish me luck tomorrow.

Fucking awesome. Get hype for three Gens in one tournament, man. Break a leg.

It was bad ass having three out of the four stations with Gens playing. People kept yelling stuff like “So much Gen it’s crazy”

great job, messiah! Good luck for tomorrow!

good luck dude.

Rep Gen well! Good luck!

Okay so… I’m happy with my overall play but one match-up. Rog. Same guy who sent me to losers, eliminated me. And it wasn’t pretty. Not only is Rog one of my worst match-ups, this rog plays like no other and has amazing execution. He sets up his straights and other dash punches with amazing spacing so if I block any unsafe ones on block he’s only hitting me with the last active frames. So hats off to him, he’s an amazing player and even though I trained with two really really good Rogs, they don’t play like him. I fell apart and what can I say… I didn’t deserve a win vs him even if I did squeak one out. I couldn’t adjust because he didn’t give me time to, and when I thought I had a solution, I just couldn’t execute it. I think it was a bit much with Rog being my worst match-up, him being a solid rog, me mind fucking myself and just not being able to play how I normally play (pick up on what I’m doing wrong and fix it). This was the first tournament that ever made me nervous. I really wanted to show what Gen can do, and I feel I did other than the two matches with him. I would’ve been happy if I was able to land that Back throw into the corner, dash, ultra 1 but when I actually got a back throw off in the corner, I didn’t have ultra.

Anyways so. He put me into losers and I had to fight my way to losers top 8. Which I did as per my last message. And I made it to losers finals where I faced Rog. So I took 3rd. Rhyllis took 1st. His play style really worked vs his even though It’s not the type I like. So now I know a few things to change up and hope that I can come back with a win next time.

3rd place using Gen? You should be proud of yourself bro! 1st and 3rd Gen: Very encouraging results all in all. Grats to Rhyllis too.
Hopefully there will be some videos up so that you can show us some difficulties you have with Rog. I used to hate playing against Rog but now I think the match up is getting more and more interesting.
And don’t give up and keep up the good work!

Eh? Should be in Video thread no? That Guile looks painful.

How big was that tournament and were there any big names? Having 2 Gens in the top 3 is pretty crazy.

congratulations to both Messiah and Rhyllis, great results!

any video of the tournament matches? I would love to see a gen win 1st in a tourny =D

dammit. i thought it was

As for majors no, but underrated non-exposed players. The Maritimes in Canada aren’t shown very often. We have some solid players and I can say that because I play them and I play other top players and can compare for the most part. I’m trying to think of a player some might know, but Savage Shrub is probably the one that comes to mind. he plays Sim and the last major in Canada he got bodied by Buddha Force’s Seth. Most of the majors in Canada are in Alberta. Which is like a 900$ plane flight, or 2 day drive. There are events in like Montreal, it’s a 8 hour drive but sometimes it’s hard to see if it’s worth going. I believe the Montreal fight Shrub went to was the one Wolfkrone went to, or the one before that. Can’t remember. I’m not bragging in no sense that I made 3rd, but I am happy that I got that far because their are a lot of really solid players who don’t get exposure and who aren’t mashers, or scrubs, they actually put time into the game and their character and play pretty solid. So I really want don’t want anything taken away from these players. Top 8 wasn’t easy. Fought a Blanka/Bison, Blanka(really glad this guy didn’t pick his vega), Sim, & Rog in Top 8.

They only recorded Losers, Winners and Grand I think. Losers is a joke. I just ended up doing crane c.HP because I was just flusttered and just wanted to get off the stage. I didn’t go with my instinct and asked a few people if I should play gen or switch, they all said gen. I wanted to play Akuma. I’m actually really embarrassed.

Link us the videos when they are posted.

Even though I’m embarrassed about my Rog play, he was the only one to beat me and him and another players Savage Shrub were the only two players I think to even get a match on me. The rest were just Rounds. I felt I played really solid, and too bad they weren’t recorded. I really wanted to show a few close matches.

Me playing Savage Shrubber to make it to Losers Finals.

What do you think was the reason you lost to the rog? was it that his rush down was really good and his dash punches really safe or was it something else?
