Gen General Discussion Thread: Theory Fighter!

See if you have better luck with the other shortcut: backdash:f::b::f: and forward dash:b::f::b: . Reducing the number of inputs might make it easier to execute. Click here if you want to see it in action. IT probably feels a lot like dan’s focus attack into super taunt, and you can actually hit the combinations one after the other as long as you’re hitting the 3K or 3P when you’re hitting the final direction.

So maybe something like: :f:,:b::mp:+:mk:,:f:+:3p:/:3k: ?

Hmm, interesting. Maybe I’ll try that tonight. Hopefully I don’t dash after stance change cuz I did it too late.

Hey guys, I felt like asking this here cause most players who are actively viewing the general tier thread don’t know much about Gen, but how do you feel about his tier placement? It seems like the general consensus I’ve been seeing here is Gen is a solid, balanced char, yet he is consistently placed as one of the worst.

Do you guys agree he is ‘bad’ as of today? I personally think that people rate him low because he is flat out a lot more difficult than a good majority of the cast, and a character’s difficulty certainly contributes to their tier placement usually, IE if someone has to work harder with Char A than B. I don’t know, but I like that people here whine less than a lot of character forums for A/B tier characters for some reason.

Here it is as short and sweet as I can.

Vanilla - He was a beast and def was not low tier. He was at least mid tier. The tools he had/didn’t have still made him a very competitive character.

Super - I disliked some of the things they removed, But loved a lot of the new changes. IMO his tier listing was correct in my eyes.

AE - I love the way he is, but could ask for 1-2 small changes, that weren’t really added to ver. 2012. I’d rather see him be able to combo via FADC anytime during a hit roll. (that way you aren’t wasting 2 bars at the end of your roll.) Also would rather see him have a better juggle state after Crane j.HK similar to Gouken, or Ryu. Example of that would be … Crane j.HKx2, Gekiro, or standing normal to act like a reset. I’d be so happy with those changes.

That’s my opinion in a nutshell.

Hey waht up marcus. I think Gen is pretty beast. Like just on a entry level he is pretty low, but he has a lot of potential with Oga crossup mixups after his forward throw, ultras, sweep etc. I think when Gen players learn the setups down pat, and mix that in to their game that he will be able to contend much better. Or at least he can be more threatening.

Plus he’s got great footsies, easy focus breakers, tricky jumps, a beast Focus attack, builds meter like a boss, and really useful/easy to land supers and ultras. Thing is he has no good reversal without meter, and he can’t FADC it. And poor health and stun.

Extremely true. His AA options are amazing too against 90% of the cast, despite what people say.

Sup rico. No good reversal? Shiii, try playing Cody or Gouken. They don’t have any good reversals, with or without meters. No, gouken’s ex tatsu doesn’t count cause it whiffs on people crouch teching/hit confirming which is what will happen 50% of the time but that’s another story.

I think Gen is good too, seems like just one of those sleeper chars that not many people have taken the time to dig into. He’s got a fuck ton of tricks, yet plenty of solid play too.

I do got two things i’ve been wondering though, I never looked it up really but goddamn his focus attack has some huge range. Is it on par/longer than Fei’s?
Oh, and as far as Gekiros go, which is the best anti-air? It seems like the mk/hk are designed to be anti-air but I have best success with lk. Do you just have to do the mk/hk ones real early?

gen is bottom tier for sure IMO but he is really fun to play.
of course you have millions of characterspecific oga x-up setups, but no one perfoms them consistently and most likely no one will ever be able to do so. characters are good if you can apply same tactics/mixups on the whole cast and get away with it IMO (like seth, viper, yang, yun, fei etc you know what i mean). gen has to play most opponents individually and requiers most likely even more matchup knowledge than akuma (at least i think so but dunno).
tl;dr play whoever you want to play

lk gekiro doesnt have invincibility frames when active, so i wouldn use that as an AA. use his AA normals.

I find spacing makes it hard to find out when and where you can do oga cross ups. I try them all the time with the same setups as online same versions and other versions, and either they whiff or block in front. I’ve stopped doing them so much. (I still attempt them), but it’s almost a waste sometimes.

i only attempt on the easy garaunteed characters. like shotos, or characters where you can whiff crane cr.rh. its not worth gettingblocked frontside and eating the biggest punish they can think of

The only characters I can do a crossup oga are Chun and Ibuki.

I’ve gotten so used to (kkk)c.mp after c.lk that I end up doing that setup, though it only seems to work on Chun 25% of the time, and Ibuki is just too easy to get them on.

Luckily, when an attempted crossup oga gets blocked frontside, I have only had people throw me as a punish.

Has any thought been given to setups toward a crossup (kkk)j.hk I know it happens, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard about it. Whenever it does crossup I end up surprised and can’t follow up.

It’s been talked about when used as a unblockable or softblockable setup. I remember back in I think it was vanilla or super someone claimed their Crane j.HK crossed someone up and no one could ever get it to repeat. It doesn’t happen that often.

There’s a vid on my utub look for the fifth or so item in the “random setups” playlist; Gen [C]j.hk cross-up in corner. It was something i did a LONG time ago, so it’s very possible that it’s incorrect. I was able to do it against boxer in the corner from neutral (e.g. not as a meaty jump-in). You can space it where you’ll hit behind and land in front or hit behind and land behind. As far as followups go, you can do st.mp, but it seems like you get less hitstun with j.hk if you only hit once, so you probably don’t have enough to do anything more than 5f or so, which is plenty (mantis super or mantis st.mp) to get any combo going.

They should’ve given Gen this costume.

Minus the beard bowtie

How do you all keep yourself motivated to use Gen? I would really like to learn him but I just get absolutely blown up online by people who I know I could beat if I wasn’t using Gen… He just seems so overwhelming to learn and it seems like the amount of work you have to do and the understanding you need to just get in and do some damage is just absolutely huge compared to the rest of the cast… I think Gen is an interesting character and not many people use him (maybe for this reason) which is a part of what attracts me to him as a main but honestly as soon as I get blown up by huge scrubs I just want to change over to Sagat or something.

Yes, Gen players tend to have some masochistic tendencies. Join the crowd if you are one.

Because he is one of the most fun and cool characters in the SF4 series and he has so many tools and shenanigans.

If you feel this way already then I suggest you just pick Sagat because any hard character will make you lose to scrubs, not just Gen.

Before reading this post I had already chosen to just stick with Gen and study him harder but thanks for your amazing encouragement. I’m glad you’re so keen to try and expand the Gen community.

Edit: After realising all the threads I’m learning from are started by you I take that back.

I’m glad if the community expands, I just don’t like it when people keep bringing up how hard a character is and that they keep having the urge to switch characters when they lose. It reminds me too much of the Viper section, which is objectively the most emo section on this forum lol.

Also to come back on your original post, AE Gen actually can hit a little harder thanks to the target combos. From a (mantis or crane) fierce jump-in you’ll get 300+ damage without using meter. Anyway I suggest you soak up all the information on this section and watch some videos of good players to see what works and what doesn’t. But I assume you’re already doing this as you don’t seem new to this game.
