I’m new to Gen, pretty much day 1 but I’ve been playing SF for a long time. He fits my playstyle perfect I think. Range/footsies with speed and mobility. I just had a couple questions.
If you switch stances during your own attack does it have any delay for the next attack or is it the same as before? Also after jumping in with a crane jump in is it better to switch to mantis for the combo? I’m thinking yes unless you have super and no U1. Sometimes though I switch stances after the jump attack and I still get a crane normal, or the combo drops.
And one more thing, do you think it would be more beneficial to neutral jump safe jump or to go for crossup mixups? probably depends on the character. Why would you safe jump instead of going for a meaty, or going for cross up mixups?
Stance switching doesn’t cause any delay if you do it in the middle of something else, like during a ground normal or a dash or even blocking. There is a glitch with the landing frame buffer though, which you seem to have noticed on your first day (and which Capcom has ignored forever).
Basically, if you do a crane stance jump in, then you’re going to be in crane stance landing frames, and if you try to attack during crane landing frames then you’ll buffer a crane ground normal… even if you already switched to mantis in the air. The only way around it is to delay your attack until the landing frames are over. You’re right that it’s better to switch to mantis after a crane jump in, but you have to be careful of this. It’s pretty easy off a jumping fierce, but stance change combos off crane j.MK take some practice.
After a hard knockdown, I usually go for crossups and try to manually time it as a safe jump to get the best of both worlds, but that’s not always a good idea. If the opponent is already in/near the corner, or if it’s a really hard wakeup to safe jump, I’ll go to the safe jump setups instead. Another really good reason is for the safe jump option selects.
Yeah that’s what I did. I practiced doing a later j.MK and hitting PPP lower to the ground, and waiting like a split second so I didn’t get a crane normal when I land.
The only two safe jump setups I found around here for Gen are f. throw> dash x2 neutral jump. and Forward throw > L roll j. forward HK. Do you know any other ~frame perfect safe jump setups off of a back throw/sweep?
i think theres a whole thread around here somewhere, but front throw dashX2 neutral jump is good for 4 frame reversals, but some characters can only be safe jumped in crane or mantis.
back throw, crane jump forward mk is good on all ryu and akuma dps. its good vs ken too except his fierce dp
the other setup with the roll isnt a safe jump by definition, but it avoids shoto dps too. on a side note use crane jump mk with that. jump hk will allow some characters to walk foward under you
Quick question, I was doing some ranked with Gen last night a bit tipsy (drunken Gen heh…). Anyway, i think i landed AA Mantis U1, maybe six times over the course of a 45 minute session and this is C+ rank to B+ rank. In general, how often do you guys land AA Mantis U1? Just trying to gauge if maybe it was the 147BP that made players want to do unsafe jump-in’s or what.
Also on a side note, Mantis U1/Super can cross-up right? under specific circumstances?
It really only works when someone does a really stupid jump in + you actually have to react in time which is easier said than done. Against good players I hardly ever do it unless I predict a divekick/jump from miles away.
Super and mantis U1 can cross-up. I believe the setup for this was crane c.lk> mantis s.lp >U1
You can actually use a lot of mantis normals like s.mp etc aswell but the timing for the U1 to cross-up is really strict and imo not so useful.
i’ve also done (few times with horrible success ratio)… mantis super > sMP > ultra crossup
but the ultra’s hitbox is pretty small and has to be done pretty much frame perfect… we still don’t know any specific setup which takes advantage of the buffer window.
I mean after the sLP rather than sMP juggle’s recovery, you have to wait for exactly ‘nooneknowshowmany’ frames before doing the ultra… so its really hard and unreliable
and after super, it probably also depend on how near/far you end so the juggle might hit sooner or later than expected, just another issue
Mantis U1 is actually a better AA than Crane U1 a lot of the time. Crane U1’s biggest problem is that it can’t grab people in landing frames, which effectively makes it 2 frames slower - a 13f AA ultra is really hard to use. Mantis U1 also has the advantages of being anti-crossup, since the hitbox extends slightly behind Gen (which also allows the ultra itself to be a crossup) and it creates a much better knockdown. The only problem with it is that people can do something like a dive kick or EX tatsu on reaction to make it whiff, but against characters that can’t do anything to stall in the air, you should almost always use Mantis U1 over Crane. Crane’s only benefit against them is changing sides. In fact, with Mantis U2’s inability to hit airborne opponents and Crane U2’s tendency to trade, I’d say Mantis U1 is Gen’s best AA ultra.
It doesn’t have to be a particularly bad jump in either. If you could react early enough to have an AA Gekiro hit clean, you could probably do an ultra. A lot of people go for late crossups on wakeup too because they think an AA will whiff, but Mantis U1 can come out in the wrong direction and still work. Cammy and the twins also love ambiguous dive kicks, but if they do it a little late then they’ll eat the ultra.
Good shit to Rubecks for taking out John Choi with his Gen at the Texas SBO quals.
Didn’t know that there were other Gen’s in Austin. Dont know if you post here but lemme know next time you’re headed to UFO so you can teach me to be so godlike like you.
I’m actually more interested at the UK tourney going on atm. A lot of Euro Gens (like 4 or so) attending that and last I heard 2 of them made it out the pools already so that’s cool.
I have no idea, it is the biggest UK tournament and people from all over Europe are attending. Come to think of it, it doesn’t make sense if there is NOT a stream…
