Gen General Discussion Thread: Theory Fighter!

Good job saying exactly what I’ve already stated… ‘although that’s hardly an advantage’

And I can complain if I want, at the same time I am researching matchup specific information and updating the shenanigans thread aswell.

But some say it’s bad to expose the style you are using. Can someone explain that?

The mask changes colours depending on what stance you are in.

gives the opponent a heads up as to whats available to you. speaking of costumes, anyone know when alt 3 is gonna hit xbl

saldy, it’s the last costum pack =/
it was available as preorder package, tho.

June 29: Super Classic Pack (Guile, Blanka, Dhalsim, Gen, Fei Long)

Yeah, but isn’t that what just about any other character suffers from?

yeah. i dont see it as that big of a deal because i switch styles all the time (too many to try and track), but one could argue that with a character as diverse as gen, you put youself in a more favorable position if they dont know when you have your best poke/anti air/etc immediately ready to use

You have to wait there is a bit of delay, then use Mantis s.MP I nail it all the time. Same when landing Crane j.HP

I previously got a match win with an EX roll against dashing in rose with her U2 on, and I think I was able to escape Viper’s cross-up burning kicks pressure with EX Oga, like twice. I’m thinking wtf here, could anybody enlighten me on this?

I’m going to have to see how tournament mode is going to turn out next week.

ground slide move escape vegas burning kick entierly. rose / sim / cody etc as a matter of fact, it seems gen’s roll has the very same properties like a slide due to his small hit box. (burning kick hits at a certain height.)

mk xx hands hit confirm into super into followup. its much easier to do against someone like ryu compared to his mk xx hands x2 fadc.

neither does adon, ken, t hawk, cody, rose, guy, etc.

they have a bunch of 5-5 matches across the board (except t hawk, but he has a couple lopsided matches) yet they can still do pretty well.

sagat and gief is definitely not 7-3, especially how they got nerfed the hardest.

you have the one of the fastest walk speeds in the game and standing mk (xx hands), mantis c.hp, crane c.mk is good vs fireballs. he still has his ridiculously long focus attack.

gens standing mk is just as good if not better than bisons standing mk. it comes out faster than bisons and most importantly bufferable into hands, but has more recovery overall.

its still better than what some character has along with a really good back dash

really? i dont see this “great combo potential” nor “big damage” with ken. gens pokes are just as good. same with his anti airs (maybe slighly weaker but still gets the job done)

yes and i still don’t see how hes weaker than everyone else. like i said before, they weakened what made him good in sf4, but made everything else better.

his fundamentals haven’t changed. mk xx hands still works. its just that it isn’t worth it to fadc after it anymore. ex oga is nerfed but gekiro buff is huge. now you can actually interrupt opponents on the ground with lk and ex gekiro. its not foolproof but still really good compared to his sf4 version.

low jump being gone is easily his biggest nerf. guess we’ll just have to find out how to use his new jump arc.

the flames are counted as a projectile iirc. i had t hawks ex condor spire beat my flame kick cleanly when his regular spire doesn;t work

arrghhh that reminded me about something I’ve been meaning to test. A few weeks ago someone released a video showing all the stuff Hakan’s EX Oil Shower can avoid. People typically say it avoids projectiles (which is true), but there are alot of other attacks that it avoids as well such as Viper’s BK, Dictator’s psycho crusher, etc. I’ve been meaning to see if EX Oga could avoid that stuff as well. I gotta dig up the Hakan video. It’s on youtube somewhere and I know it was posted in his forum.

Ty very much. I didn’t know burning kicks were considered projectiles, that’s pretty unique. Would it be possible that Rose’s U2 is considered projectile as well?

I’ve once had EX roll VS EX psycho crusher match where Gen and Dict just passed through each other, but I lost as soon as he got out his non-ex PC. I think only EX PC is considered proj, that could explain why he can erase hadouken with it.

yea Rose U2 orbs are definitely projectiles. I’ve used EX roll to go thru them before, and I know that Rufus players use Galactic Tornado (qcf+P) to go through them as well.

Now that you mention it–I do believe that I saw Hakan use EX Oil Shower to avoid Bison’s EX PC in the vid. It’s probably considered a projectile like you said.

EDIT: Found the Hakan vid:

The most practical avoidance for Gen is probably Viper’s BK. There’s probably more undiscovered stuff that wasn’t shown in the vid (i.e. Rose U2 wasnt shown).

“with meter” sounds like ex or fadc. just say “with super”.

what the? ken no good damage / combo potential? really? he’s one of the most damaging characters ingame Oo
try a j.mk, c.lk, s.lp, c.mk into (ex)tatsu combo. easy as that and look at the damage. or c.lp, c.lp, srk. etc and gen’s poke is shit against ken’s f.mk. gen’s s.mk has low priority. (hurbox is way bigger than hitbox)
ken, rose, cody etc maybe dont have many 6-4 match up (but unlike gen, they do have a few) but dont have many 4-6 match ups like gen has either. and of course there are other low tier characters, which have the same problems. but only makoto and hakan have it to the extent gen has. dan suffers merely from the fact that he can’t hitconfirm combo into anything, besides that, he would also better than a good chunk of the cast. also, think at gen’s low stamina / stun value.
there is a reason gen is not seen on any major tournament anymore. if 2 players are on an equal level gen will most likely do lose, just becuse everything he can do can be easily avoided or punsished. a pro ryu will nearly never lose to a gen. (again, on pro level), just because u cant do squat to get damage on him. gen looks way better on the paper than he looks in an actual fight.

these should be all (non ultras)

I’d have to agree with zUkUu, especially on the Ken damage part. A good Ken trapping you into his j.mk c.lk s.lp c.mk ex tatsu x2 combo is horrible and his f.mk is insanely good as a poke and to advance on your opponent. Not to mention other pretty decent combos he has. The biggest problem is his damage output by far, other lower tier characters like Cody can punish you pretty hard (his bnb fadc bnb for example). Another big problem as zUkUu mentioned is his general unsafeness, pretty much anything Gen does can be punished especially if all his decent-ish combos start with a jump in. That shit just doesn’t hold up on high level play.

Black with the Taunt #3 “Waste of Time”

btw i found a new (dunno if it was mentioned before) buffing input.

if you are in mantis stance you can do :qcf:, :qcf:, kkk,kkk to get crane ultra. works the other way around aswell. this makes anti air ultra / super alot easier instead of kkk, :qcf:, :qcf:, kkk and takes him to a new level of jump-in punishment. also alot easier to make mantis ultra as punishment in crane stance.

you can also do :a ultra motion which requires only one KKK, but i havent figured out how yet. (i think :qfc:, kkk, :qfc: but dunnow)
