Gen General Discussion Thread: Theory Fighter!

LOL, @tha messiah - yeah… gen is stupid hard in comparison to the other characters. The thing that gets to me most about this is how even if you put all that hard work in you can only go so far realistically speaking.

also, just got trolled by my brother (with him being deadly serious)… he mains zangief and believes that gen doesnt have it bad against gief at all “his EX GEKIRO OMG!!!” as i watched him unsafely jump in on a gen with ex meter lolling to myself and he also overates the wall dive cuz he got hit by a gimmick ex gekiro after a blocked wall dive lololol. sighs. oh and to top it off he says gen is a better character than vega (fundamentally).

I actually find characters like ryu and sagat exciting to play. Playing a really good fireball game is so hard. They really aren’t as easy to pick up as you think. Combos? for the most part easy. General gameplay? not so much.

we all have our own opinions, but playing ryu is super easy. I took general footsies that I’ve picked up, played with it, zoned when I needed to, dashed in for the kill, etc etc. I found it super easy compared to Gen.

If you think you can pick up ryu in a day you’re flat wrong.

ryu is easy to pick up but like every char - hard to master. gen is hard to play and still hard to master. on pro level there isn’t that much difference on how much time you’ll have to spend to get on tournament level.

I didn’t say that tournament level, I didn’t say I was Daigo Ryu. I’ve played Ryu a few times in many of the games and he was easy in them too. But all of his OS are super easy. I took all the footsie tips and things I’ve noticed other great Ryu players use, and I was able to use them my self vs some pretty good players. Not saying Tournament level, but still easy to use. And don’t tell me what I can and cannot do. I love when people say that. Especially people who play First Person Shooters.

For anyone who has knowledge of the game, can pick up almost every character with no problems. I used to main Akuma, so I have a pretty strong shoto back ground. But ya… ryu is easy.

Tournament level is the only real level that matters IMO. Casuals are fun but they’re nothing to judge on.

kid I’m not going to Evo. I played against a Mariod00d and did pretty well, didn’t win but his gief is strong as hell, so getting a round vs him with a character I don’t even use… But some people don’t have to be around tournament players to get the game. You think someone like Alexander Ovechkin played with the best players in the world his whole childhood? Some people just get it. They watch what others are doing and get it, they don’t have to play vs them to get it. Some do some don’t. It’s called visual learning. I’m not comparing myself to him on a skill level. but some people just get things. And I’m a fast learning, show me once is usually all it takes.

Sorry I gotta do this but let’s be real here. A round ain’t shit, no matter who you get it on. People play differently in tournament. That’s when they play their best.

eeeeeeh… no. Actually many people in tournament feel the pressure and don’t play at their best. And I think most people know Ryu is simpler to use. Of course, skills is what matters most but still some characters can pull out combos in easier ways.

Let me correct that. “people that can handle tournament pressure play their best”.

If you don’t get a replay which has some obscure moves/ideas/tactics that could improve your play, keep watching it. Look at it from all angles, almost be that fighter in Tournament X Grand Finals. At some time your brain will work out the possible solutions. Sometimes repetition is all it takes.

To clarify, I had that problem with option selects. Since I rarely understand which OS works when, I have to practice them and keep looking at replays (inputs) to see them done by the people who do “get it”.

Hope you aren’t actually talking about me. Because I get videos… I watch them and see what other people are doing with no issues. my only problem is bad habits, But if I’ve never used something before I pick them up with no problems.

That’s all.

Sorry, I misread the whole thing. Tends to happen when I go on forums out late.
But it’s still the best approach to watching replays. The “why”-factor is often the most difficult to grasp (bait, option select, psychic or to retain position).

I have a question. Let’s say you are facing someone like hmmm Rog. And he does his Headbutt and you crouch block, do you continue to hold crouch block while you attempt to punish him with let’s say Mantis c.LK, c.LP etc etc. OR, do you move the stick to the down position then punish? I’m having problems where it feels like I’m in a huge Block Stun when I know I should be +13 after I block the Headbutt. But sometimes it feels like I’m still in block, I try to punish just as he lands but nothing comes out, then he hits me. WTF is up with that shyte. It’s offline as well, I’ve had it happen at a casual meet. Should I move my stick to just down? I don’t like that because I want to have back block just incase I want to use roll. Anyone have this problem?

EDIT: +/- Frames are the same no matter what block you use right?

doesnt matter what you press. only crouching or standing can have an impact on landing range of some moves (e.g blanka ball).

okay so back to my original question.

sorry if it wasnt clear: you can hold back, downback or down or forward, it simply doesnt matter [unless you do a “special normal” like f.mp, that would change some stuff xD]. i hold down back while in crane stance to punish with roll. +/- frames also stay the same (but only if you really block, tatsu etc can be ducked under for instance).

i never occured that i couldnt punish stuff like that, only if i was to slow / far away, then i got another lp srk or headbutt into my face. the time window isn’t that long in most situations. I think in your case the headbutt hit you with its later / last active frames which reduces its recovery (due to your block stun) to a minimum of a few frames. - still enough to get punished, but you’ve to be quick.

if anything left unanswered, I think i missunderstood something wrong T_T

hmm i was wondering if because I’m still holding block it’s trigging me to stay in block, but I’m assuming the Block Activation box only comes on when there are active frames? I dunno what the hell is going on. Maybe it’s the connection I’ve had with people. But I’ve played a bunch of matches where they throw out random moves like example. Ibuki Neck Breaker. That’s like -13 Frames on Block. and I was trying to start off my punish with Mantis c.LK yet she had time to punish me with her stupid DP motion kick.

EDIT. I missed the later frames thing. Maybe that’s what it is. People do these random things like across screen neck breaker. I block it but they have time to recover. It would be nice if they tested this stuff and posted the minimum and maximum frames. When I see -13 frames. I’m assuming no matter what as long as I block it I have -13 frames. So someone should say if blocks on last active frame you only have +4 frames. if you block at first you have +13. That should would help out a lot.

Try it in training mode and see if you can catch it with a reversal hands.
