I use c.lk c.lp s.mp all the time. Every match. yes, you plink it and it’s insanely easy after that. I use MP~MP+LP rather than the LK tho.
I actually use plinking for at least 4 kinds of Gen combos.
EDIT: and because I’m bored and procrastinating cleaning the bachelor pad, here are some that come to mind
c.lp, s.mk~mk+lk xx gekkiro/super (you can also use s.mp/s.hp for super combo, but s.mk isn’t range or crouch-dependent like the others)
c.lk, s.mp~mp+lp, KKK c.mp~mp+lp xx roll
…hands FADC s.hp~hp+mp xx hk gekkiro
…hands FADC s.mp~mp+lp (then another s.mp without plinking if applicable to character/range), s.mk xx hands
I’m going to give Gen another go. I think what has happened as I’ve been to cocky and haven’t been paying attention to what Gen can do to punish or what isn’t punishable. I’m going to revamp my Frame knowledge and get back to the lab and finish the Match-up Thread.
i feel the same way when im playing online with ibuki, i drop her link i get srk and there goes a good chunk of my heath. what really gets me when it lagging and i cant drop a target combo. it fun to see me get a vortex go into tc and not have the Hervey punch come out. i still go back to gen when i have nights where i cant seem to get in on people at all. he still a very fun character, and i am really good with his range of his normals.
I’m not too sure if what I’m doing constitutes plinking. What I do is that i tap: c.lk-c.lp-c.lp-s.mp-s.mp-s.hp.
If you tap this at a consistent rythmn the outcome is that of lk-lp-mp-hands combo. You can look at my input as a double tap cum hands combo input so you actually get two chances to get the same link to come out.
Hope that makes sense.
I think what you are just doing is pianoing everything in. Plinking is making it so you can perform low frame links easier. From the way I’m reading it, I don’t consider this Plinking.
yeah that’s piano’ing. There are stickies and videos about plinking but I can’t find the really good ones. Here’s a quick rundown though:
I wanna correct myself. Not every match. Against several characters like Blanka, s.mp won’t link after the c.lp if they’re crouching. I learned this the hard way by trying to hit-confirm into super off a linked s.mp too many times
man cr HK crane does the job for me…cross up or not i can AA em unless i mess up d timing. that’s my go-to anti air for gen i find it more relaible unless they are far from me then i gotta use the cr hp mantis
Gen is one of the worst characters in the game mainly due to his high vulnerability and huge lack of priority. Almost every Fighter in SSF4 is a bad matchup for Gen and has some kind of advantage over him, and no matter how skilled a Gen Player is at timing and executing moves/strategy, Gen is almost ALWAYS more at risk, then the opponent is. Gen has extremely limited wakeup Options as well as extremely limited defense moves, so when a Fighter is being aggressive against Gen, he just has to sit there and constantly block in place most of the time and accept it while the Opponent mixes up on him and grabs and whatever. Just about all of Gen’s Special Moves are ineffective outside of combo(s), so a Gen Player has to rely ridiculously heavy on Normal Moves for most of a match, and most of his Normals’ lack Priority as well as Recovery too. Any other Fighter in the Game (Even Low Tier Fighters’), would have at least some Special Moves that are useful outside of Combo(s), like Ryu’s Shoryuken, Guile’s Flash Kick, Blanka’s Rolling Attack, and even Hakan with his Oil Slide. Gen lacks so much Priority with his Moves, that it is insane. Take Blanka for Example, his HP Electric Thunder Move, can/will beat almost all of Gen’s Normal/Special/Super/Ultra Moves. It’s understandable that a Special Move has more Priority then Normal ones, but it doesn’t make sense that Special/Super/Ultra Moves will lose to a Special Move like Blanka’s Electric Thunder and/or Moves with the same Priority as it, almost or all the time. Gen’s Suckage in SSF4, is truly legendary. There’s alot more about Gen that’s horrible, but what I explained are some of the most Major problems with this Character.
His pressure game is all he has… chipping your opponent to death with rolls ogas and hands… He could lame it out once he has health advantage with crane but thats it!..if your caught against the wall. FaCS jump-ins to avoid OS… or crane cr.hk into meaty cr.mp into Roll/ force your way out with lp or mp into mkhands or under him with lk oga if he neutral jumps.
The best thing going for gen is the Parry glitch, Crane super buff, crane j.mk/hp mantis c. lk lp mp and Tiega to counter most AA’s…and his somewhat safer Ogas after deep low hits. his normals do have priority, Prime your opponent into guessing which way he has to block.
but almost every other character has a very good move like a fireball or an insane grapple or a move with very good priority, without using ex.
not to mention that no one else has 2 stances u have to think about. you can get killed for hitting the right button in the wrong stance
WOOOW yesterday i had to realize again that using oga for other purposes than crossup (toooo random and can be ex DPed), feint/bait (sometimes escape) and after scored knockdown for confusion purposes, is sssoooooo much fail. how can people (ab)use this garbage move?!?!?
Looks like you guys haven’t improved much in this thread in terms of style and play with Gen. I have a few things i’d like to share, so to get the discussion started, has anyone messed around with Gen’s cr.hk?
I kid you not, i’ve been using Gen’s Mantis cr.hk to move Gen’s hitbox forward as some people are trying to jump at me, and I usually cross them up, and grab them or start a damaging combo or something. It’s a nice mindgame, just don’t abuse it.
