I just played SFA3 with my friend, and started thinking how he would’ve turned out in SSF4 if he was exactly like X-ism Gen. Not sure if this can be included in General Discussion though.
psh give me a-ism gen anyday. i dont like the combine of his two styles lol.
My god, it took me this long to notice that crane walks faster than mantis. And I stay in crane the majority of the time >.<.
Still loving gen. Having trouble with an fadc combo. It’s bnb -> hands -> Fadc -> HP -> Geikro
After the Fadc the HP turns into Hands. I don’t even mash it I only tap it once. What is the timing for that?
try dashing faster. The way I used to do it was hold forward the whole time, because in Vanilla you had to vs some characters like Ryu. And it made it so you only had to press Forward once more after the FA to Dash out, which made it super easy. You can still do it that way. But now I leave the stick neutral then Double Forward to dash, I land FADC combos a lot better that way.
For anyone who looked at the most recent character rankings in eventhubs, what’s your opinion about Gouken’s matchup being 6-4 in Gen’s favour? TBH, I see it as 5-5, seeing how Gen can possibly own him in close range but he will have a lot of trouble getting in there against those with good zoning. I also think Claw match should be 5-5 instead of 6-4 in Claw’s favour.
I know that list of character rankings is just rough and not a proven fact, but I cant help thinking that they might be lacking some information, especially on characters like Gen or Dan.
claw can outrange / poke gen. thats the reason.
dunno what’s about gouken. i mean it’s not the hardest match up to encounter and crane c.mk can ddoge his projectile, but 2 combos from gouken and you’re dead. every counter that get’s ya takes off 30% life etc. also he can zone you very well with mp hadoken.
Ty for that. I’m landing my fadc combos better.
Oga question. What version of oga is the best for the cross up? I always do HK version but I just learned that the LK and MK starts at different heights. Which one can give me that ambiguous cross up instead of just a regular one.
And one more thing, what’s his kara? And is it any good?
Glad that helped. I was having a hell of a time with mine and still do because I’m used to holding forward like in Vanilla. I still need to break myself of this habit as I score a hell of a lot more FADC combos when I don’t press forward as a shortcut.
Okay there are a few cross up versions. It all depends. One Cross up version that can work well is if you have them stuck in the corner. You wall dive off the wall behind them with LK and don’t use any direction so he uses the really shallow dive. That in some cases (usually big characters) will land infront when they might think it will land behind. So you have to play around with each version to get a feel for them. If you are playing vs someone like Sagat and you score a knock down when they are mid screen you oga behind them and press the direction you came from so it just goes over their head, that usually crosses them up.
As for the Kara The best Kara throw to use is the MP~LP+LK as it works for both stances. If you want to practice them all…
Mantis
LK~LP+LK
MP~LP+LK
MK~LP+LK
HP~LP+LK
Crane
MP~LP+LK
Thanks, I was playing around with his kara earlier. It gives you a pretty decent range. Once I master this I can use it for tick throws, since his normal one doesn’t work very well.
I’m going to play around with the ogas and see which version is the best for each character. I’ll post my finding here. Maybe that will help other people.
he’s not awful on his own…but when you compare him to the rest of the cast he has to work a LOT more than everyone else to win a single round. the only person i may consider ‘weaker’ than gen is…nobody at d moment…ill take dan online and see how i do
from my experience if you go to training mode and record your medium kick oga then play it back…it crosses up at random intervals…which is pretty wierd…but then i noticed that if i do the oga and the opponent is holding back…it doesnt cross up most of the time…but if the dont move and try to block at say the last second and be sure where ur going it does cross up…i may be wrong but its what i observed…i use crane a lot just trying to better my mantis game
It’s so much easier to get results with Dan.
So I’ve come to the conclusion that the only thing I really like about Mantis U2, is that, it doesn’t build the other players meter very much if you kill them with the initial hits before the Grey Damage meter takes effect and there is still another round left.
Well I’m not going to make a new thread to say. Fuck Gen. I’m finish with this up hill bull shyte. I’m almost done Super. I can’t wait for 3rd strike. They better keep no auto blocking in. I played 6 straight high ranked players that fucking mashes hardcore during my links. And of course online is so fucking hit and miss. Fuck this mashing game.
that’s unfortunate It was a pleasure watching your videos and what you brought to the table for Gen players
thanks. I will however still contribute to the Gen thread as the Match-up/Strategies is not complete.
Oh no… Don’t give up on the old man… We need all the gens we can get! As for mashers perhaps use less link dependent combos could be the answer. Even when u look at the Arturo vs daigo match during the final clutch time Arturo mainly fell for simple mixup/combos rather than some exotic link combos.
For me I am concentrating on getting lk to lp to mp then hands combo so that it is less link dependent and more consistent in online mode. I think Hoigek does that too. Hope that helps.

Gecko
I find I land more s.MP s.MP online than I do c.LK, c.LP, s.MP I might start plinking. I’ve never really plinked. So how would that look? c.LK, c.LP, s.MP+s.LK?
After a session of online matches just now, this sums up my feelings perfectly. It goes back and forth though.
It’s fucking Ken players that piss me off the most. I’m going into the lab and finding out what works well vs air tatsu pressure. Every god damn ken I play uses it all the time to get in, it’s hard to AA the only time you can AA it is if they do it way too far away, but that barely happens.
Okay after testing this is what I’ve found works. You have to Auto Correct your Mantis c.HP OR Auto Correct your Gekiro. The only other option is dashing under. However, in some cases I tried to dash under and dashed into the damn thing. I need to get used to his spacing and where he is on the stage.
