Gen General Discussion Thread: Theory Fighter!

I’ve only seen one yesterday.

Danny L, great Alpha player but I don’t think he plays Gen exclusively because he got kind of raped and then switched over to Adon.

Sorry, can you clarify how this works? Is it on the 2nd hit of Crane s.MP? Was it a counter-hit or not?

sorry. but if you read a few more posts before…

I was able to link Gen’s Overhead on hit to PPP s.MP, Hands. But the overhead is only +1 on hit, and because it was a counter-hit I believe that would give it more frames?

Thanks for clarifying. I get what u mean on that and I had a similar situation when I was having a few games with a friend. Though I connected the links with a Mantis c.LP instead of s.MP. Kinda tested before and without counter-hit on Crane s.MP, it was doable but really strict timing. After realizing that, I threw away that idea and went on to practicing combos  Can’t help much on frame data cause I didn’t really dive into that subject sorry.

EDIT: Crane’s s.MP as in the 2nd hit when opponents wake up. Dunno whats the term everyone here might put it. Okizime is it?

Wake-up is the usual term, some people like to get all fancy and use the Japanese term Okizeme.

Have gen’s Crane c.mk go under all fireballs please. Maybe that will make it easier to get in on these people without jumping so much <_<.

Thanks, I’ll take note of that.

Just tested in the lab and linked CH overhead with s.MP. It’s only possible when 2nd hit is CH, which means you have to miss the 1st hit. In fact, this is really hard as the 1st hit has longer horizontal range.

it’s good to use when people are focus attacking. That’s when I linked them. First hit get’s absorbed and the 2nd hit counts as the Counter-Hit I believe.

since i cant find the info, so ill have to ask:

is it possible to crossup with oga after a back/forward throw? (i cant watch the Kickin’ it - The uses of Oga video…)

there is no space independed setup after a throw afair (after u2 there is). i mean, ofc it can crossup, but you will have to time it properly

btw to watch some movies you otherwise can’t watch due to sony bgm copyright bullshit, you can use an online proxy. (google it, will find various - not all work like you want, but most do).

What’s up people? Name’s Jaysonic. Due to some life difficulties (lack of job), i haven’t had time to play SF as much as i want. But now that that situation has been corrected i think it’s about time i start playin for real.

I’m an 09’er to competitive fighting but not to fighters in general. (I’ve been playin them since Samurai Shodown 1).

I’ve mained Vega since Vanilla. He’s the only one i’ve really clicked with until recently when old Gen came up and poked me in the back of the head (suprisingly not killing me).

But let’s pretend i’m just an utter noob. I’ve lurked a little bit and seen a little bit of what’s what. But obviously lurking won’t help me much. So i decided to talk some. Where do you people that main Gen think i should start with him? What should i make sure i know or practice first? Any info is welcome. My cup is empty.

Also if this needs to be moved to a different thread, let me know and i will be glad to move it.

@JaySonic

I’ll assume you are a beginner who are just coming over to Gen after playing Claw for like forever.

IMHO, I think the things that you need to do in the very beginning are:

  1. Knowing all his normals, start-up, frame advantage, and range (maybe except crane s.LK)
  2. Practicing Gekiro & distinguish LK and MK/HK and EX Gekiro.
  3. Buffering hands during a normal
  4. Switching stances while blocking/throwing/etc.
  5. Charge (you need to remember that his Oga requires longer charge than barcelona, and the same length of charge with rolling crystal flash)

Practicing links and combos comes next I think.

at first you should make yourself familiar with his move set. every normal and special aswell as the ultras and supers and theire corresponding usages and properties. it’s alot of theoretical stuff at first, but when you use them you’ll get known to them.

then you should try gekiro for once and get at least the lk version off.

afterwards you can train some basic combos, ultra setups and crossups. mk-hands is nice if you can pull it off, but you dont have to force yourself if you dont get it at first try. you can play without it.

watching videos alwasy helps. be it combos or actuall matches. but you can’t learn matchup experience with just watching and reading. play some friends or online matches. don’t get frustrated - gen requires A LOT of patience. and when i say A LOT, i mean A GODDAMMIT PIECE OF SH!T LOT. you WILL lose, you will lose often, but if you win, you have that special feeling that keeps you on playing him.

to put blunt: gen is low tier and considered as one of the worst characters. he has low health, stun and damage output, while need some real skill to win with. but it is rewarding to stick to him and see oneself to keep on improving and beatin other (good) people with him.

it will come by nature when to use which moves, how his mindgame works and how to play in your pace. I’d say add some gen player who is willing to show you some tricks while playing. tha massiah is one that comes to my mind at first. he’s a nice guy and i bet he’ll gladly show a fellow gen how things go.

also, dont hesitate to ask any questions. the gen community is one of the closest i know off - no one will blame you even for the noobiest questions. we’ll know how hard it can be to play him.

so keep up and fight death

The first thing you should do is the Trials. They should give you a feel of his timing and switching between styles. After that get used to switching between stances for movement and jumps. Gen’s Anti Airs, Crane c.HK, Mantis c.HP are some of his BnB for defense. Go through a bunch of the characters in training mode, set them to jump in with their main jump in moves like jumping Hk etc… and practice moves gen around and then going into Anti Air. It’s easy just to stay ducked and then wait for it. But set the record to go for like 4 seconds then make them jump and kick. That way you can act like you are using footsies and move back n forth. After you work on these. Then you need to know what gen can use to punish people. So this is where frame data comes in. What I do, is take note of who I have trouble with. I look at their moves and then find out how much advantage/disadvantage I have vs their moves on block. Then what I do, is go into training make someone like Bison use his Scissor kick then practice punishing it after a block. If you start there and watch a bunch of gen videos on youtube. that should give you a strong foundation and help you decide what kind of Gen player you want to be. Let me know if you need any other tips or suggestions on where to go next.

Thx for the love Zukuu. Jay, Add me to XBL if you want and we can chat and go over some stuff

@street11: Yeah that’s a good assumption. I’m like a HALF acceptable claw. And Oga takes longer to charge then FBA huh? I probably wouldn’t have figured that out on my own.

@Zukuu: Checking out normals and attempting to figure out Gekiro is actually the first thing i did before i posted here. I checked the other thread and looked at the tuts for it and hands techniques too. Also i knew about Gen before i was interested in him. I’m a MASSIVE glutton for punishment and i don’t get frustrated easily. I love challenges (multiple Master Ninja mode run throughs of Ninja Gaiden, Metal Slug in arcades with one quarter, etc) So i’m hoping Gen doesn’t break me.

@tha messiah: Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll do that. Training mode is just sexy as hell isn’t it? As soon as i get a chance i’ll add ya and we’ll do some stuff.

Thanks for the tips guys. I’ll try this stuff and come back with more questions.

Sonic out.

Another big tip. If you get a stun and don’t want to use meter. Use these two things.

Crane j.HKx2, c.MP, Roll. (This works well with any one who doesn’t have a small hitbox when stunned. Avoid Dan or Chun-Li.)

Mantis j.MK, s.HP, Gekiro (Depending on the character you can use HK gekiro)

i think plain s.hp => hk gekiro works on all characters. only in longer combos it’ll whiff afair.

ya but if the stun is only caused by a single hit. why not go for a better longer combo. Sometimes Crane j.MKx2, MP, Roll is perfect for that.
