GantZ: The 2nd Phase

The first phase of this manga is well worth your time. It’s the beginning of the second phase we can’t stand because the storyline is going nowhere fast and our author couldn’t care less. Hell… if the first phase wasn’t so damn good most of us wouldn’t still be reading this because of the second.

Knock yourself out.

I just don’t expect anything amazing after the first phase is over.

Im assuming there is enough resolve after the first phase to leave it alone? Lol well I started it so I hope so.

EDIT: Its kinda sad, the little excerpts so far make the author seem kinda cool Oo

Depends. This is basically a heavily action-oriented manga filled with softcore hentai stuff. If you like that (and who doesn’t?) then it’s alright.

The only issue with Gantz in general is that the storyline is either nonexistent or extremely limited, things happen without sense/logic/reason, and that a lot of the characters are just plain unlikable (as well as being 2-dimensional).

But it’s alright. Kinda mediocre, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Our author is the best thing since unprotected sex when he is on point and the first phase was his diamond encrusted money shot. Violent, random, unforgiving, compelling, utterly satisfying and rarely wore out its welcome. It is only during the first phase you’re likely to read the most entertaining missions and come to love (or hate) one of most thoroughly developed characters (Kei Kurono) I’ve read in my manga history. Yes. The first phase is more than worth your time and highly recommended.

The problem is… Oku must have snorted too much crack or played too much god damn Metal Gear because he has started to become a watered down Kojima so to speak. He became so in love with his wonky narrative he fails to realize that we aren’t him and thus can’t begin to comprehend the force behind the second phase, the storyline itself, and its utter lack of direction. Where Kojima gave us more than enough substance, drama, character and plot development in between all of the weird shit to latch hold to Oku simply couldn’t care less. We have no idea what the fuck is going on 90% of the time and though that used to be part of strange allure of Gantz, I don’t think any of us can tolerate another phase filled with unanswered questions and infuriating bi-weekly releases. There simply isn’t enough depth left in the manga for him to get away with bullshitting through another 349839048 volumes and expecting us to just deal with it.

We’re tired of it.

Constantly thorough out this manga he’s grown far too accustomed using death and over the top shock value to prove simple points (e.g. this current arc for instance + the unnecessary death of the new team to open their eyes to new techniques and jar them out of stale repetitious tactics). He has sidestepped important questions and plot holes through sudden refusal to develop new characters. You don’t even want to KNOW about his random bi-weekly/monthly random breaks returning with issues of even more molten shit we never wanted and shouldn’t have had to wait to read.

It’s as simple as this - if he feels like doing it then it’ll he more than likely get it done without the courtesy of an explanation nor promise of an apology. Not because it’ll benefit us or even the storyline for Christ sake - just him. The only guarantee we’ve ever had is violence in copious amounts but at this stage in the game most of us have read between the lines and we’re frustrated. The man has talent and mad potential, but he lost something. Be it steam, drive, money, whatever. The end result is a once solid piece of unfinished work going further down the drain than what is applicable.

So yeah… I would honestly suggest taking a break from the manga after you’ve finished the first phase unless you’re a glutton for punishment or like the majority of us were sucked into it hoping somehow Oku would get his act together and give us the business.

Enjoy the ride while it lasts.

I guess that’s basically the point I was trying to drive home here.

I read the entire comic from start to finish and got all caught up about a month ago. I was going to come in here and say that you all shouldn’t be so hard on the 2nd part of the series, but from what I’ve been told this latest fight has been going for for a Long Ass Time, which I guess is pretty annoying if you’ve been following the series from jump street.

Anyway, I’m late to this thread and I’m late to the debate about the Middle Schooler but my two cents on the Middle Schooler is that he is at least mid tier.

People have been saying that the Middle Schooler is top tier because when Kei and the crew first got there he had already cleared a bunch of times. But the Middle Schooler only has the appearance of top tierness.

If you think about it, part of the reason he was able to clear so many missions is that he never told any of the people in the room about the nature of the game. Some people interpret this to mean that the Middle Schooler must be a bad ass G because he didn’t need any help from the other people in the room. He didn’t tell them shit about the suits or the guns or the bombs in their heads, so he must be a bad ass to clear those missions without needing any help, right? Not really, because him not telling the other people shit about the rules basically meant that they were running around the arena like clueless sheep while the Middle Schooler could just cloak himself and snipe the aliens while they were busy beating the crap out of the clueless noob Gantzers. Him being perceived as top tier is partly due to him basically using those schmucks as bait.

If anything, I’d put him at high-mid.

The issue I have with Nishi surviving is his point total since I can’t imagine him taking down a boss by himself. He isn’t the physical type by any means which would imply either some of his former teammates were contenders (still seems a little too convenient of a set up for Izumi to kill the bosses while Nishi mopped up what little grunts were left then after Shion leaves Kei and Kato’s story begins), the kid got lucky WAY too many times, the missions leading up to the introduction of Kei and Kato were boss less Ala DC Alien mission, Oku screwed up again big time… or Nishi has been in the game a hell of a lot longer than he told us. You’ll also have to keep in mind his tactics weren’t exactly the mark of a genius. A middle schooler shouldn’t garner praise for doing the first thing any selfish stooge would have done after they survived and got their bearings straight.

I honestly feel the reason people still hold him to such high regard is because of the information he supposedly has yet actively refused to share or simply couldn’t answer as noted by his surprise concerning the lack of a time limit, vampires, and being sent to Osaka.

I think him knowing about more than one sphere, team, and the end of the world trash is where this “knowledge” of his ends. Seriously.

Nishi’s scene with Izumi on the train was so fucking badass.

When we were first introduced to Nishi, I thought he was some sort of official agent of the Gantz ball; like the Rukia of the series who knows what’s going on. I didn’t think he was human at first, and I thought the reason he wasn’t telling people anything about the nature of missions was because his job was to find “worthy” recruits who had “good instincts” or who intuitively understood the significance of the accessories in the room. I thought that after he saw that Kei had the presence of mind to put on the suit that Nishi would tell him something along the lines of, “Since you figured it out I can go ahead and tell you that our job is to kill so and so”; and Kei would be like Ichigo at this point. But none of that happened, and Nishi didn’t want to tell them anything even after they survived the first mission. So my theory that Nishi was a shinigami/agent-in-the-know type character who was sent by Gantz/Soul Society to find the “special humans” to fight the aliens/hollows doesn’t seem to fit, given Nishi’s behavior. Although there’s still the chance that Nishi does in fact know what’s going on, it’s looking less and less likely that he knows much more than the rest of them. I still think he knows some shit though.

I think Nishi lasted as long as he did because he used people as bait and the bosses started out weak while only getting stronger progressively. Back when he and Izumi were in the room together the first time, I don’t think they were fighting these huge ass bosses. Onion Head basically fought with brute force, but then the aliens started using sound attacks with the big mouth robots that Nishi died to; and the big birds that screamed.

Only because it was the one scene were his smug demeanor was warranted and only then because he was kicking ass for a change. But once again he completely ruined it by getting ‘tired’ and punking out.

“Oh, well… uh this isn’t my problem. I mean they are coming after me too but it’s your fault so uh… yeah. I’m gonna sit this one out.”

…Negro please. We all know the vampire grunts aren’t worth one drop of the ink they were printed on but if Izumi hadn’t done his job I wonder if Nishi would have gotten the business served to him.

If he had showed up to Shion’s add I would have more respect for him regardless of whether or not he survived the encounter.

Truth be told I have my doubts any of us would have had a problem with Nishi being an insider agent working for the big man upstairs and might have even praised Oku for giving us some solid no strings attached answers concerning the plot. Hell for a while some even thought the grandmother Kei ran into in the anime version of the manga was in fact a Gantz recruiter for quite some time.

If he does know anything new and relevant about Gantz I’m afraid it won’t have much of an impact on the storyline. The online blog was a bust. Kei read it all of it and applied it to the team only to turn around and revive Nishi so that almost confirms there wasn’t much there to begin with. Oku has wasted so many opportunities to knock us sideways and surprise us with some solid entertaining plot twists in the second phase it’s maddening. Nishi should have been resolved a long time ago. It’s been a few years and we STILL haven’t been presented with a flash back of his past. Doesn’t that strike you as a bit lazy?

Agreed. Only now have the aliens started to become aware and more aggressive. Judging by the size and story behind the German sphere you’d think the whole entire process had been going on for much longer than Nishi’s introduction, though. Eh, who really knows? I’d just like some answers for a change. I think we all deserve it.

booo no resolution in 1st phase ;-;

So I started reading Gantz and I’m up to chapter 203 where Muscle Rider is about to fight. So when does this series start making a least some type of sense? The 1st phase is by far the best because you felt for the characters when they died. Now I just basically read it for the artwork and random death scenes.

2nd Phase doesnt’ make much sense, and it’s completely crazy.
There are a few cool parts, but it’s not nearly as good as 1st Phase

It’s kinda like Heroes Season 1 compared to Heroes Season 2

host samurai is too gangster

So far, it hasn’t. It’s all set-up and no payoff. 276 chapters later and we don’t even know what the fuck is going on. Even that wouldn’t bother me if this boss would just. fucking. die. already.

It seriously feels like the author is stalling for time. At least we got to see Kaze fuck shit up for a little while.

I shouldn’t hate on 2nd Phase since I’m a Gantz nut and after reading it without the breaks, I still like it. This boss fight does feel more like he is showing off art style than anything tho’. I have faith that shit will get explained after this mission is over or at least get the ball rolling.

Anyone think Kurono will get revived after this mission?

‘Not-Give-A-Shittance’ is a powerful attribute (as per SRK Tier Threads). he views his teammates as fodder (i mean, he killed one of those guys in the room before they went on a mission!) so he can complete/survive the mission. he’s ruthless as hell, but i bet there’s more to him that hasn’t been expounded upon. *

  • watch Oku fuck it up

277 is out

WTF.

If this would’ve happened 6 months ago, I probably would’ve been happy with it. But I can’t help feeling that the last page was a major cop out. WTF.

At least this retarded arc is finally over. Hell yeahz.

goes back to reading Vagabond

Please let it end

[details=Spoiler]I have this sinking feeling that next chapter, HE COMES BACK TO LIFE AGAIN.

OH NOES NOT EVEN VAMPIRES CAN KILL HIM.[/details]

I was wondering where blondie was. Bet he’ll wear the suit next time: if there’s a next time for him.
