Let me undersrand this correctly…in this episode anita was kidnapped, raped and requires rescue essentially invoking all the tropes anita condemns in her videos.
It was a single article, it is dishonest to claim there were anymore than one. Obviously other journalists reported on it, because at the time it was of some significance.
Here’s an analysis of some of the articles around the same time as “gamers are dead” was posted:
And let’s be serious for a moment, if all gamers read those articles as an attack against us, rather than the misgoynistic, regressive groups they are mostly aimed at, then perhaps we do deserve the title of whiners or crybabies, as much as being accused of being basement dwellers isn’t nice, it’s a hell of a long way from the treatment of other groups.
Gamers do suck, but that is because we mostly have a minority of terrible people representing us, the outliers, the fringe of gaming, even prior to gamergate. We’re, in a way, sort of happy to embrace these fucks, these basement dwellers, the harassers, the idiots, the rude boys and it’s telling that even articles telling us to basically “stop that shit” provoke massive hateful responses, because apparently cutting this minority off is akin to capitulation, rather than a process of maturing.
I’m sure at one point prior to the massive-gaming industry that now exists, “gamer” was an organic term that did genuinely mean someone who played games, but now it’s a term used and owned by the gaming industry to describe both existing and potential customers, most of whom are white males.
Unfortunately for those that dislike change be it good or bad, the market term of “gamer” no longer accurately depicts reality, changing demographics, attitudes, existence of new gaming media and genres, have all led to a gradual change, one that is now recieving a backlash from the above mentioned minority, but games and gamers change, we no longer play text-based games, or spend most of our time creating our own games on antiquated computers and it’s sad that people seem to object to the gradual change and evolution of our hobby, ironically not realizing it never had always been subject to change.
So i don’t understand how any of those articles could count as collusion, when they’re merely the result of a backlash against changing times, (often, but not in all cases) pointing out that gaming and gamers mean different things to different groups, in the case of Leigh Alexander’s article “Gamers don’t have to be your audience, Gamers are over” she is clearly talking about the marketing concept of gaming and she even acknowledges my point about us being represented by terrible people, even if some of us take steps to limit their influence:
“Game websites with huge community hubs whose fans are often associated with blunt Twitter hate mobs sort of shrug, they say things like ‘we delete the really bad stuff, what else can we do’ and ‘those people don’t represent our community’ – but actually, those people do represent your community. That’s what your community is known for, whether you like it or not.”
It’s not an attack against us, it’s an attack against that vocal minority that wishes for us to be this thing that none of us here would really want to be; an unchanging blob, solely defined by marketing.
Well, the difference is for most people in GG raising your voice is not risky in the least. Unless you’re e-celeb, then you’re relatively safe. I would also like to point out that a bunch of bloggers pointing at a group of people and claiming harassment does not hurt individuals, nor does it hurt those individuals chances at getting a job. If you don’t have privacy settings on social media and lose an interview because they googled you, that’s your fault. That could be about anything you write, not just GG.
None of the bloggers have called people’s work places either to get you fired. I don’t recall Ukatok doxxing anyone, either, nor publishing articles with people’s information to send masses of anti’s on them. If the MSM or game blogging sphere had targeted individuals not putting themselves in the line of fire like TotalBiscuit from the GG side for hit pieces, doxxing, personal slander on a personalized basis, and whatever, there would have been serious repercussions. If JoeSchmo talks about GG and Ukatok said “lets slander this guy!” and wrote a hit piece, and then did the same for the next average joe, we’d have a serious issue that could be put through the judicial system. That’s why Gamers Are Dead was at a group, not individual people. Raising your voice about concerns in journalism ethics has not been risky for anyone. Being called a misogynist on the internet, if you think that’s taking a risk man, you’re just as bad as the victims claiming harassment from GG and that their lives are in danger from trolling. Can’t take some heat on the net? Get the fuck off.
Now, prominent individuals have been doxxed, swatted, and sent stuff like Milo has, but do you really think anyone in the blogging sphere would claim they did that? Do you think that speaking up against the bloggers is risky in that they’d retaliate in that way?
I’m not going to dig up a link but there was an official post on Capcom-Unity that was condescending and claiming fans were only mad about the white hair. Of course a company isn’t going to put as much on the line as the bloggers have, but it’s still uncalled for behavior considering it was a business essentially telling their customer base to fuck off and misrepresenting their criticisms, which is bad business. Still, the point is, you make it like the risk vs speaking out against Capcom or Ukatok is really that much different. The worst that happens is they point at a group of people and call them names. Wow, such risk, my internet feels.
Was it ice T or the female detective that ultimately rescued her though. I mean like in terms of taking out the has guys physically and grabbing her. I only ask because if ice T did it that would mean the show played into the damsel trope anita routinely condemns.
SWAT team with female detective rescue her. Gamer ISIS sets her up taped up holding a shotgun with gun fire playing on a boom box hoping the SWAT team would shoot her.
Ice-T shoots the lead Gamer ISIS man, joke about camping being lame and all.
The SVU episode was a pretty good satire of what white people with woefully uninvolved lives think of internet happenings. Every disagreeable tweet a gun and every website a hate group. Deranged delusions awesomely captured on television.
Also, between this and Towerfall, what is with making pastiche versions of white women brown? Comparing actual minority struggles to white whine is unsavory on any level.
That Law&Order SVU episode was the only episode in the entire franchise to have me just falling back in my chair laughing. It was like for one episode it became Brooklyn nine nine. The one liners put it over the top.
If it’s not bad puns at inappropriate times (“Why did they sexually assaulted you?” “They leveled up!”) it’s ‘gaming lingo’ by Ice T that makes NO FUCKING SENSE.
Female cop: "FPS?"
Ice T: “First person shooter, a shoot em up game.”
Female cop: "rape?"
Ice T: “Rape is a mod in level 16 of KOBS”
“We can’t trace the posters on redchan becuase they are using darknet.”
“Yeah I doxxed that bitch, let’s meet at that street corner so I can give you the doxxing information” (I think there are better ways to share information through the internet than to actually meet in person but I’m not a professional TV writer so what do I know…)
“Your son, DOES HE PLAY VIDEOGAMES?”
“Yes but”
“WHERE DOES HE PLAY THEM!?”
“Being a game dev makes you a god, and some people do not want to let women have this kind of power.”
“There is no reset in real life.” - Ice T
Also all references to SJ in the episode makes absolutely no sense because none of the characters even care about social justice or explain what it is, and even fake Anita just wanted to focus on her game’s merits rather than BS. The terrorists said her game is mind numbing and terrible but it’s a complex AAA strategy game, not a subpar non-game like DQ or Rev60. It’s also called “amazonian warriors” but “they hate it because it’s non-violent” and then later fake Anita said you can play however you want to it IS violent after all? (In postal you can also play however you want…) So even the simplistic black and white story has no internal logic. They just shoved in random stuff from gamergate media spin.
Is it really this easy to become a professional writer for TV?
In any case thanks for the laughs. 8chan is already flooded with SVU memes.
