Gamasutra lol.
They don’t know corn from oats.
madden comes out every year and consistantly sells well…
yeah, because the expectation is that you need a new game to get updated rosters, schedules, and such. but fighting games do not have that same expectation, nor do they have as large a casual audience, or such a powerful product pushing it like the NFL. plus players expect fighters to be very nuanced and deep…shit can take years to figure out and master…
the capcom model of releasing a ‘revised’ version a year or two after is bullshit, because you do not buy the first game expecting it to become obsolete so soon…madden is different (yet sales of that series have actually stagnated, so). then again COD series says hi.
At least they acknowledge SF4 brought fighting games back to the mainstream unlike others who think they brought them back from the dead.
Gamasutra forgot that coop on the same console isn’t available on the 360 version and wasn’t mentioned until like a week or 2 after release.
Read the content instead of attacking the source (also they’re pretty well thought of in development circles)
Oh good call, yeah they totally missed that part.
two comments from recent articles to compare:

Now, I’m not saying the company is fatally flawed. Capcom gets a lot of things right -- just nothing to do with this game, pretty much. The bright side of its financial results was that the critically-maligned *Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City *sold well beyond expectations. Why?

Because it *correctly *taps into both the zeitgeist (it’s a Western-developed shooter) and nostalgia (it’s set during the events of the fan-beloved *Resident Evil 2*). It doesn’t matter if it kind of sucks. It even offered free DLC to fans who held onto their discs after beating the campaign: a clever touch, and literally the opposite of what happened with *Street Fighter X Tekken*

(from the gamespot article about the 25th collectors ed)
Another example of Capcom doing an anniversary collection proper justice came about in September 2011 with the release of the [**Resident Evil 15th Anniversary Collection**]('http://www.gamespot.com/news/resident-evil-15th-anniversary-box-scaring-japan-6323004') in Japan. Inside the box were the original PlayStation versions of 1-3 plus the HD Revival versions of [**Resident Evil 4**]('http://www.gamespot.com/resident-evil-4-hd/') and[**Code Veronica X**]('http://www.gamespot.com/resident-evil-code-veronica-x-hd/'), alongside modest extras including two soundtrack discs, stickers, and a pair of pins. Even though [**Resident Evil 5**]('http://www.gamespot.com/resident-evil-5/') wasn't included, Capcom did leave extra space in the package for the game, should you own it. In the case of this anniversary set, the lack of gimmicky extras is overshadowed by the inclusion of games that actually matter to fans of the series. It doesn't matter that the versions of 1-3 are PlayStation discs. In a way, it's respectable that Capcom would reprint discs for such dated hardware. The best part is the price, which at 7,800 yen is just shy of $100.

I'm usually not the hate-on Capcom type, but it seems like if you take those 2 things together, Capcom thinks substantially more of their mainstream fans than they do of their FG fans.
They forgot the part where the game was bad.
This article is about those that refuse to believe that a Capcom fighting game could be bad.
Edit: the article was well written.
And I find this quite funny.
“Worse yet, the [DLC] characters were all available in early builds of the game distributed to the press”
Yeah, I had NO idea that was true. I wish he went deeper into the hacking stuff. He spoke in "supposedly"s a lot. Probably to avoid flak? That’s fucking bonkers if the press + DLC thing is true.
But from a pure staying away from the game itself article, it was pretty solid.
RE4 and Code Veronica re-releases were pretty halfassed though…having them on systems with HD doesn’t make 'em “HD revivals”. Compared to MGS HD or DMC HD(well, the gameplay parts anyway)
Yup. Gamasutra is one of the worst gaming sites out there.
It has been amazing that the interest in fighting games has escalated so high in the past several years. Since vanilla SF4, game developers have tried to cash in on it. Capcom has pushed it the hardest. IMO they are strictly hopping from deadline to deadline without even caring about how close each game is to each other. It went from a one year turnaround (SF4 to Super) to getting something out (conveniently before the serious tourney season) and releasing a complete version later.
The article is well thought out and highlights some serious errors in Capcom’s judgment. One year sequel/new ip is not a bad thing, look at the Call of Duty games. While those games come out like clockwork every year, it maintains the hype of getting something fresh and exciting. Now imagine a new CoD coming out every six months. People will struggle with the reason to get the newest one just because A) jumping on board might leave behind friends who only want enjoy the previous game and B) the next game is in six months again.
I’m not sure how to end this rant but pushing this fast cycle on the FG community might cause a lack of focus within it. Makes me reflect on the days when all I wanted to do was 3rd strike.
It’s a good, well written article that makes strong points. Everyone with time and want should read it.
This is the opposite of the truth.
Almost all of the content is critical or well developed. Even if some of it is wrong, how someone arrives at a conclusion is often explained, which makes it better than pretty much any site out there.
No. It’s just filled with flowery language written by self loathing, approval seeking man-children.
Gamasutra is like a child putting on his parent’s clothes in an attempt to look grown up. It just looks ridiculous.
These people are as clueless about videogames and especially “art” as all the rest, only that they are more pretentious.
For someone overly critical of something for overuse of flowery language, you did a fine job of explaining nothing about it in a lot of words.
Said it up above, but agree or disagree with the content instead of just blindly attacking the source. Clannishness is part of the way that we let Capcom get us into this mess.
Edit: Funnily I’ve been on record several times saying that I don’t think that developers should listen to the hardcore fans that much. But I realize that that works under the presumption that they want to make the best game they can. So live and learn ><
Honestly I think the problem that the game talks about has a lot to do with the assumption that the FGC will just buy anything out there, and that it doesn’t matter. Their other games seem to treat the players better because they know they have to compete for those dollars.
This should be the core of any customer service, I don’t know why it seems so hard (from the article)
It sure does feel like a lot of this goes on. Who here doesn’t know someone who expressed disinterest in a Capcom FG yet still bought it?
They work on an image of a “serious intellectual” website about video games, but they understand video games worse than your average gamefaqs poster, so they adopt opinions that they think that will make them look intellectual (and probably doing so unconsciously, without even being aware of it themselves), but anyone that has ever dedicated some thought to the subject, and that has some critical prior knowledge can see through the charade.
Putting aside gamasutra hate, I didnt see anything wrong with the article. It sums up the controversies around SFxT fairly accurately afaik. It wont tell FG people anything they don’t know, but it communicates to non-fans what the situation is?
